Incredible Drive.......2007-12-21
I bought this External Drive for use with my PowerBook and have never looked back. I have had it for a year now and I use CCC to make a complete clone of my hard drive and it works flawlessly. I was so impressed that I bought a 120GB USB drive for other storage and to help backup my friends computers that are having Windows troubles.
It is smaller than the picture leads you to believe and it is fast and reliable. What more would you want from an external drive...
Best portable hard drive out there for your money.......2007-08-30
I have had two smartdisk drives for about a year now, and I couldn't be happier with them. I have two versions, a FW 800 and FW 400, and the speed difference is almost negligible unless I'm doing heavy photo or video editing. I primarily use them to store my aperture library and my aperture photo vault. These flawlessly daisy chain with my 17" macbook pro when i want them too, and even play nice when i daisy chain them with my two 500 gb WD My Book Pros.
If you have a Mac, there should be no question in your mind about getting these drives, they are remarkable pieces of engineering.

This thing broke down on me, believe it or not, three times and I'm on my fourth one. I'm glad they replaced it, but the last time they gave me a USB hardrive instead of a firewire. It never lasted me for over a year. And guess what? This fourth one just messed up. And they don't have a toll free number so you have to pay. You also have to pay to ship it out there and they want you to ship it fedex which if I added up all three times I returned this product for another used one, I could have gotten a brand new hardrive.
I would not recommend this product for those who have important documents that need to be saved and transported somewhere else and have it fail.
Lucky me, I backed up my stuff on a good old reliable CD :)
Oh and by the way, I always disconnect everything by "safely removing" it and I have XP in case anyone wanted to know.

Nice drive. Problem when daisy chain two drive together. XP will lose connection with the two drives. I guess it draw too much power and the firewire can't handle it. As a result, the drives shut themselves down.

Quality filter that reduces UV haze and protects your lens.......2006-01-16
Why should you get a Haze (UV) filter? The benefits include correcting Ultraviolet (UV) light which may cast a bluish tint to your images and obscure distant details, and protection of your front lens element.
The UV-Haze filter will improve your images when photographing mountain and marine scenes, where increased haze threatens to make your photographs indistinct in color and clarity. Be aware that this filter reduces Ultraviolet (UV) haze, and not haze related to other reasons like smog.
Photographers tend to debate the protection aspect of UV filters. Some say it will degrade an image to a certain extent and can increase the likelihood of lens flare. These are legitimate concerns that can be minimized with a quality lens filter. If the scene you are shooting doesn't present UV haze concerns, the filter most likely isn't doing anything to improve your image.
Hoya has designed the Pro-1 filter with these problems in mind. They applied 12 layers of Super Multicoating to the surfaces of this filter to produce an average transmission of 99.7%. Coupled with maximum surface precision, this allows for increased resistance to flare. Monocoated filters (standard inexpensive type) do not resist flares nearly as much.
In my case I shoot quite a bit of amateur softball. Using Canon L lenses (expensive) the last thing I want is to wipe the dust off my front element and accidentally scratch it. I would much rather scratch a filter due to the difference in cost between replacing the filter and repairing the lens.
Even though the protection provided by this filter is invaluable when I shoot amateur softball, I leave it on for all shooting scenarios. I wouldn't think of doing so with a low quality UV filter. I only remove it when I am using other filters and I'm not interested in stacking.
Another benefit of the Pro-1 series is the double threaded super slim filter that is more than 40% lighter than standard filters. The weight difference doesn't mean a whole lot to me, but a thinner filter means one can stack filters or use on wide angle lenses with less chance of vignetting (unwanted darkening of the image's corners). With the front threaded, this filter will accept lens caps without difficulty.
