Not a Bad Hard Drive .......2007-10-28

I have been quite pleased with the Maxtor External Hard Drive. The unit is quiet and runs cool. I have returned other external hard drives because of heat problems. I was a little surprised at the absence of a power switch, however I overcame the problem by using a spare Radio Shack remote switch. Works just fine. I recently purchased a Maxtor One Touch 4 250 GB drive, however I have not yet installed the drive, so I cannot comment on it.

Avoid this and all Maxtor products like the plague!.......2007-04-20

I bought this external hard drive in order to archive client data in a safe and secure external manner. One week after the warranty ran out the drive crashed in such a way that I'm forced to spend hundreds (possibly thousands) of dollars to retrieve the archived information. When I began asking the "experts" I found out that Maxtor has a bad reputation. Save yourself and your data and buy some other brand.

Not a good product.......2007-04-08

I bought one and there is a problem with the USB interface. My Sony VIAO, with Windows XP Pro, complained that it was plugged into a slower USB 1.1 hub. It wasn't.
I tried on another computer, also running Windows XP Pro, and after it initially appeared to recognize the drive the computer failed to work with the drive or even recognize it when it was plugged in.
I guess I'm lucky. I can return it without any loss of data, since it never worked properly to start with.

My died after a few months. Overall it is a great product. Fortunately, it was still under warranty. I should get it back in a few days.

Easy to use, easy to abuse.......2007-02-16

I bought this to back up my hard drive to with the idea that I would reinstall windows on the hard drive and then restore from the maxtor.

***The install of the maxtor and the backup went seamlessly. It was like it had always been there. No complaints with the product****

The complaint is with me:
BEWARE if you plan to do a new install of windows to DISCONNECT THE MAXTOR before you start because people as stupid as myself delete the partition table on the maxtor inadvertently and have to pay $$ to get the data recovery afterwards - glad to pay it for what I got but not my best scenario. Someone else I know inadvertently selected the maxtor as the boot drive for windows install and now the computer brain is on the maxtor instead of in the regular place; also because someone forgot to disconnect the maxtor before the computer lobotomy commenced.
