Great buy for the value!.......2007-12-14
I bought an $80 Sanyo DVD Player from Best Buy that lasted a month before failing. Best Buy wouldn't refund or replace the broken DVD player, so I went online and bought this one for $35. I have been using it for about 5 months now (about 4 times a week) and I have had no problems with it. My 3-year old also figured out how to use it in under 5 minutes. I see that some people had problems with theirs but if it broke tomorrow I would still say that I got my money out of it.

I was able to use this product twice before it ceased functioning. I watched one DVD over 2 sessions and when I attempted to watch another one a few weeks later, it wouldn't even power on. Truly you get what you pay for.

This product does what it advertises and not really much else. It has progressive scan playback with component out and digital audio out. Playback quality is passable though it does not contain the technologies in higher-end dvd players to prevent pausing during layer-changes and buffer through skips and dirty disc sections. But then again, it's a $40 dvd player. The remote is, well, a remote you'd expect with a dvd player of this price.
This player will not take abuse or excessively heavy use. But if you break it, take consolation in the fact that you can buy 9 more before you have paid up the same for a quality Sony/Onkyo/Denon/etc. player.

Me gusto mucho el reproductor, se ve muy bien y es una excelente alternativa para alguien como yo, que poco ve películas en DVD, supongo que todas esas cosas "extrañas" o "supermegaplay" que llevan los otros han sido eliminadas en este equipo, aunque no desmerece nada, funciona a las mil maravillas, tiene justo lo que yo necesito y si un comprador cuenta con un sistema de audio de 5.1 que no haya sido importado de una galaxia lejana, este reproductor le va a servir de maravilla. Lo único que no me gusta para nada es el control remoto. Aunque se ve delgado, delicado y muy liviano, hay que presionar con mucha fuerza para que haga contacto y funcione, además la potencia del mismo no es muy buena, así que es mejor ubicarlo en un lugar visible y sin nada que interfiera la señal del control al DVD. Con el precio que tiene, me parece que es una buena compra.

I bought two of these drives, and they both broke and lost all my data in the 11th month of my owning them. Maxtor will not stand behind their drives for longer than a year beyond their manufacture. Pretty low confidence in their products, don't you think? When you buy a hard drive, you expect your data to be there for at least a year. Not these. I strongly reccommend that you do not buy these drives. They are awful products, and Maxtor as a company is extremely poor. You will be sorry if you buy them, I can guarantee it.
Mac Users: included backup software is very slow.......2007-08-14
This drive works well enough as a plain old drive but the Mac software for backups (MaxBack) is terrible -- it takes days and days to back up about 270 gb of data, usually it hangs somewhere during the process. Their tech support so far has not offered a solution.

I bought this thing about a year and a half ago. After about 15 months or 3 months after the warranty expired, I was unable to write the to the drive and I started hearing that clicking sound you usually hear when a hard drive dies. Considering the poor reliability of this drive and the fact that other manufacturers like Seagate have warranties going up to five years I kinda feel like an idiot for buying this piece of junk.

I do a lot of archiving onto both external hard drives and optical disks in my photography business. I use three Maxtors: 150, 250 and 300. I found the software to be worthless, but the drives seem to work fine.
I just drag and drop files onto the current drive when I need it. Afterwards I turn the drive off to avoid wear and tear.
I had trouble with my old 150 gig drive once, but I did a scandisk and defrag on it, now it's fine. I still back up onto optical disks as well, although they aren't safe either. Nobody seems to have a reliable archival system, so play it safe.

So I've had mine for about six or seven months, and was completely happy until it died! It seems like that's the consensus of these reviews, people are satisfied with the Maxtor until it suddenly stops working, and then they're very unhappy, as I am. I plan on contacting the new owners of Maxtor and trying to get it replaced, but from reading other people's reviews I probably won't get any of that data back!
