Customer Reviews:
Plays everything, very small, good looks.......2007-12-22
This player plays everything, and can be easily made region-free with a few button pushes (do a quick google search and you'll find them). The front is mirrored, so it looks cool when it turns on and the display appears behind the mirror.
It is also extremely thin. I bought it for the width, however -- if you check the dimensions you'll see that the width is much less than the standard 17 or 18 inch wide component. I needed one as narrow as possible to fit on a planter stand beneath a wall-mounted flat panel. This one fit the bill, and is a nice little player too.
The only thing it is missing is a front panel USB port to play movie files directly from a memory stick. Philips makes players that have that, but they were too wide for me.

Philips DVP3960 Multiformat 1080i Upscaling DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media Support
I bought this unit about 6 weeks ago on whim one day because I really wanted a DVD player that would support DivX and I wanted it fast. It has a nice feature mix, it's simple to operate, and it truly does justice to my high quality DivX video files. I am hardly and expert on electronic equipment, but I know this unit does what I want it to do without any problems at a really nice price. My only criticism is that the titles that appear on the default menu screen don't display enough characters for my taste and I have to remember to condense my file names or I can't tell what's what.
Good value for money, but it cannot upconvert 4:3 DVDs without stretching the picture to 16:9.......2007-12-12
I was looking for a player that could upconvert to 1080i and play PAL DVDs, and decided to buy this one. I have many 4:3 pan and scan DVDs, and discovered this player could only upconvert at a 16:9 ratio, stretching the picture. My Sharp HDTV can't resize the aspect ratio of HD content, and the only way to play 4:3 DVDs in their original aspect ratio is to output the signal at 480p, defeating the purpose of having an upconverting player (which also downconverts the picture of PAL DVDs formated at 576p). After researching further I decided to return this DVD player and get a Philips 5982 instead, even though I do not need 1080p. That player, through its pillar box feature, can upconvert 4:3 DVDs without stretching the picture and can also be made region free.
If you do not plan on upconverting 4:3 DVDs, or your TV can resize a 19:9 signal to be 4:3, this is a great player. Otherwise the 5982 is worth the extra $20.
Mixed results with the Philips DVP3960.......2007-12-05
I had mixed results with the Philips DVP3960 which I owned for about one week and then returned to Walmart. Despite offering some good value for $40, this player simply had too many drawbacks for me.
What I liked about this unit:
(1) Some DVDs did look markedly better "Animusic 2" for example. Clearer, more detailed looking video and enhanced color.
(2) Good results on recent commercial DVDs in my limited sampling.
(3) Audio was very good with superior resolution compared to my older progressive-scan DVD player.
What I disliked:
(1) Typically, jagged lines with text with this player. Jagged lines also an issue with video too.
(2) On many older DVDs, my $70 SR2000 off-brand progressive-scan player paired with the upscaling of my Sanyo 32" HDTV did a better job of giving a smoother, more film-like video experience.
(3) Despite Philips' advertised claims, there is limited compatibility. The Philips DVP3960 failed to playing my DVD+ burned media (TDK), displaying the message "NO DISC". Also, a few of my older commercial DVDs would not play.
(4) Small unit has a somewhat cheap feel.
works great with my 19inch Aqous.......2007-12-02
I get a great picture with my LCD tv. I see a difference from choosing 480p vs 720p. Very close to HD quality in my opinion. The player has a full function remote (and yes..you can open/close the dvd tray by holding in the stop button). Very simple set up..great picture..very nice and slim looking design. Played every disc so far that I have tried. I am happy with my purchase and got it for under $40.00.
