The S-Master digital amplifier processes audio signals from your HDTV broadcast, DVD, Super Audio-CD, or other digital source, with signal processing and amplification executed entirely in the digital domain with no analog steps--resulting in clear, accurate sound reproduction. It also includes a digital AM/FM radio tuner with 30 total presets (10 AM, 20 FM).
The DVD player is compatible with DVD movie, standard CD, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW (and Dual Layer DVD+R), DVD-R/RW, and Video CD discs. This system also offers SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) playback for high-resolution audio that carries a one-bit Direct Stream Digital signal, recorded at a phenomenal 2.8224 MHz sampling rate. SACD supports both stereo and multi-channel music reproduction.
Sony's S-Force Pro 2.1 surround sound technology emulates a three-dimensional surround sound field by using advanced signal processing and sound wave phasing, while the omnidirectional subwoofer handles the low-frequency effects. The result is full immersive surround sound with fewer wires, and less speakers than some surround systems. The digital direct twin drive subwoofer delivers a much more powerful and uniform bass sound that exceeds most passive or active subwoofer systems. The speakers are specially designed with two unique drivers in each, which are fed by multiple discrete channels, helping to create an immediate, "out of box" surround sound experience. The DAV-X1 provides built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro Logic II surround decoding for playback through two speakers and subwoofer).

Dreaming about a better system.......2007-12-21
I've had this system for a year, and just can't convince myself I'm happy with it. It seems to have different volume ranges with DVDs, CDs, and feed from HDTV. So while it will rattle the windows playing a DVD, I can hardly get the gain loud enough to hear quiet dialog on some TV programs. The CD reproduction is tinny and not acceptable for music listening.
As far as surround sound... none that I can tell. Does not compare with the 5.1 that I cobbled together with an amp and some old speakers.
So if you just want to play your DVDs loud in a small room, this unit looks good and provides a great picture. But if you are looking for a home theater system, dream on.

do not buy this product. the input in the back of the receiver does not
work and will not work. i had it replaced twice already and both had the same problem, so i'm thinking its the product that's defective.
i have a wii, xbox and ps3 and when i plug it in the back input system, only the audio works, but not the video. there's no video display in the tv.
i have even called Sony customer service dept and they could not help me. They even told me its because i have a sony bravia hdmi hdtv, that the high definition was not set correctly, but when i tried it on my other tv, the sony trinitron regular crt tv, it doesn't work either.
so the system is defective when it comes to input receiver, other than this, the product delivers awesome sound that is very impressive.
simple & great sound plus added features.......2007-12-02
this system offer simplicity and powerful surround system. I notice if you setup the speaker in equatrial triangle from your listening position, you may enjoy the benefit of 5.1 virtual surround. The drawback is limited spot compare to regular 5.1 system. Best when you play with DVD since it has multi-channel sound. I should lower the subwoofer level below normal for dvd movies. CD only produce stereo sound and the subwoofer level need to be adjusted to higher level.
Amazing sound and clarity.......2007-10-30
I was looking at the Bose 3-2-1 when I came upon this system. For the difference in price, I thought "what the heck". I am so glad I made this choice. The sound quality is outstanding and the look is amazing. We have a small condo and this is sufficient to listen to music throughout the entire place.
Good Value--Good Sound.......2007-08-20
Not wanting wires, extra speakers, etc. I was deciding between a Bose 3-2-1 GSII system and the sony. Review and ratings of the Sony DAV-X1 were better. although I was leaning toward the Sony, I still asked the associate at Circuit City to turn on the Bose display to hear it one more time. He had to disconnect the power and reboot the system in order for it to operate. I indicated to him that problem had been mentioned in some of the reviews. He indicated that he has had to do that several times when asked to demonstrate the Bose.
I bought the Sony. It was fairly easy to install as I connected the Cable box and a new 50" Sony HDTV. I used an HDMI cable and wired it so that the TV can still produce sound through its speakers since my wife doesn't want to have to operate another remote to turn on the TV sound.
I've noticed that for watching TV, the best sound is provided by using both the TV internal speakers and the X1 at the same time. The internal spealers give a bass balance to the crispness of the X1 and allows "voice" when there is heavy background to be clearer than just with internal TV speakers. For DVD, the X1 is fine by itself so we just set the internal TV speakers to "0" with the remote and enjoy the great sound from the X1.
I'm pleased with the Sony and have had no problems. I bought it for $499, half the cost of the Bose GSII and am very satisfied with it.
