i am a pro in SONY, this my favorite brand.but my deception is the excess of Copy protection, i dont able to record movie to watch later/timeshifting. this unit live in my house in less of 24 hours, returning to store.
I HAVE A QUESTION, what is the best DVD+R to record tv show, I AM NOT PIRATE!. THANKS.
Does not record from PAL signal source.......2007-11-25
I was looking mainly to record form my Sony Handycam (DCR-HC40E), but, since, it does not accept PAL signal, it does not work for me. I guess my research was not proper. This model does not accept (and output) anything other than NTSC signal, hence, it will not work out-of-the-box in countries like India. Fact that it only accepts NTSC signal was not highlighted in the product literature/brochure available online.
However, as a DVD player it is excellent- outputs very good video (NTSC only and US region/universal DVDs).

Pros:
Similar Sony model available in India (RDRGX330) is priced about 18000/- INR in white market. For ~150 USD it was good saving.

Could not really test the recording feature yet. I am procuring external PAL - NTSC video converter to exploit its recording feature.

I ppurchased the Sony RDR-GX355 tunerless DVS recored to burn DVS's form material shot on my Sony HandiCam. The one button options does this easier than with other devices that I have used.
Copyright Protection Features Kill This Great Unit.......2007-07-22
The Sony RDR-GX355 is a great DVD player/recorder! Store brought DVDs has near-HD image quality via HDMI upconvert on HDTVs. The unit is also incredibility easy to operate and the menu for creating your own menus and titles for DVDs you record yourself is one of the best I have encountered. Despite the high praise I have just given this unit, the copyright protection features kill the idea of owning this unit for my home.
Sony's copyright protection goes beyond "protecting" shows and movies on television as previous reviewers have noted. Sony has gone out of their way to even slap copyright protection on home movies you recorded starring your kids, dogs, cats, etc. Lets say you hooked up your camcorder to the RDR-GX355 to transfer the home movie you made onto a DVD. Now you show this DVD to grandma and she loves it and wants a copy for yourself. You think, sure, I'll just pop this DVD in to my computer and just burn a copy. Unfortunately, the RDR-GX355 will encode all DVDs it records with copyright protection that prevents your computer from making duplicates or transferring the video onto your hard drive. This means any DVD you record will be your ONLY copy. Why Sony did this is beyond me.

NOT for PS3, but a good drive.......2007-09-26
The PS3 comes with a 60 GB Segate Momentus hard drive. I bought this 160 GB Segate Momentus thinking it would be an easy internal upgrade for the PS3.
I was wrong and should have paid more attention. This is not a SATA. It is an Ultra ATA which means it has different connectors.
My money is not wasted, though. When put into an enclosure, it makes an excellent external hard drive and the price is right. I now have a backup external hard drive for my music and picture files on my PC.
Just don't expect to use this as an internal hard drive for your PS3.
Seagate Momentus 5400 160GB.......2007-07-03
So far it has been a solid drive. It replaced an Hitachi 80GB that was rapidly being devoured by Vista, Office 2007, Access 2007, and 2 versions of Visual Studio, 2005 and "Orcas", plus all the other tools used by a low level software developer.
Installation was simple, given the ease of a Dell laptop with easy access to the hard drive. Only issue was re-activiating Vista on the new drive, but that did not even require a phone call.

This drive was ordered as a replacement to attempt to salvage a Powerbook G4 Laptop. Dropped right in, works like a champ. highly recommended.
Blazing Fast and Arctic Cool.......2006-07-01
I just spent part of the day changing my standard Apple 80Gb hard drive to the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160Gb hard drive. I wish I could give you directions on how to crack open your Powerbook G4 but I did the guy-thing and figured it out on my own. I can tell you, however, that it was not difficult to do. Before I started, I inserted my Tiger (OS 10.4) DVD and then shut it down. You need to take the battery out and place your Powerbook on a towel. You alsp need to make sure you have all the right tools and be very careful. I took my old 80Gb out and placed it in a Firewire/USB 2 enclosure made by MacAlly (model PHR-250CC). This was very easy to do. I installed the new Seagate and put everything back together. I started up holding down the "C" key and it fired up running off the DVD. I installed Tiger on the new hard drive and when finished, chose the option to move my files from my "old computer," which was now my old hard drive in the new Firewire enclosure. Everything transferred over without a hitch. This is exactly why we love our Macs! Try doing that in Windoze. I have now been running with the new Seagate for 3 hours. I immediately noticed a jump in speed. Although my old drive was also 5400rpm, the new Seagate is quite noticeably faster. And, most amazingly, it is tremendously cooler than the old hard drive. The old hard drive ran so hot it was uncomfortable to hold on your lap. The new Seagate runs so much cooler that it feels only slightly warmer than room temperature. No kidding. That feature alone is worth the price and the work. I would not hesitate to purchase this Seagate. It's something I should have done a long time ago.

BEWARE: Tamron Lenses are NOT compatible with Nikon D40/D40x SLRs.......2007-07-09
I ordered this lens from Beachcamera to go with the D40x SLR kit that I was also buying. The lens is nice, zooms smoothly, the optics are crisp, and it does fit onto my new Nikon, but there is NO Auto Focus compatility to the D40x. Beware that the not all lenses labeled "AF" are not all AutoFocus with all cameras in the brand line. Only lenses labeled "AF-S" and "AF-I" are compatible with the D40 and D40x Nikons, and as far as I can tell Tamron doesn't make any of these AF types to mount to a Nikon. Now I have to suffer the S&H and beachcamera's 10% re-stocking fees...don't make the same mistake I made!

A wonderful beginners lens to practice telephoto skills, especially for the price! I bought it to take photos in Yellowstone National Park, and it never failed me when I wanted to zoom in on animals and landscape features!
Although if you are looking for the most amazing lens quality, this is not for you!
