So disappointed..........2007-12-22
I fell in love with this product at first and watched numerous movies on it, until I finally played a movie rented from Netflix and the player refused to play it. I was able to see it on my other dvd players, but this player refused to play it. I guess I'm more upset at myself for not heeding the warnings from all the negative reviews. However,I've been a faithful Sony consumer for years and had a Sony dvd player, which is the reason I puchased this product. When I contacted Sony support all I got was the "run-around". They wouldn't even admit that this product had such a glitch. Folks, I've only experienced this one problem, but I'm not hanging on to this product so that I can get aggravated over the other issues that it may possess. Do yourself a favor and take it from an avid Sony lover, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT AND SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE. If you want try another Sony player, who knows???
EEEEEEK! Don't Buy To Record TV!.......2007-11-25
My poor elderly mother! Her Sony DVD/VCR died not too long ago, and she went out to buy another VCR recorded/DVD player, only to keep bringing home ones that did not have TV tuners, and needed a cable box. By the time she bought home this jewel, she decided to just get a cable box. Cox set the whole thing up, so it was set up right. And I set the timed programs, so I know those were right.But soon my mother started complaining the VCR would only tape a part of her soaps on ABC, and then the screen would go white. Since she is sometimes VCR challenged, I assumed she was doing something wrong. I told her right out it had to be her! She said she was taking this recorder back, and I once again told her there was nothing wrong with it--it was her! LOL Then, I started reading reviews online about this recorder...oops, it wasn't her! This Sony recorder does not record right with a cable box. When my mother took it back to the store where she got it, the clerk didn't even look in the box to see if everything was there. And no restocking fee was charged. The clerk simply took the box and said: "Yes, people keep bringing these back."

Sony RDR-VX555 Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player
The single most user-hostile electronic device I have ever encountered.
Does not do everything the manual claims it should. The tiny buttons on remote are hard to press, and I have small hands. I am usually a big fan of Sony gear, but this unit is a disappointment. The support website has also been less than helpful.

I have not tried to work some of the more interesting features but this machine works great BUT you MUST have DVD - R or RW discs - normal CDs will NOT WORK with this unit.
I called "tech support" and got some dummy who did not even know enough to ask me what kind of discs I was using!
We've recorded some of our favorite shows off our Dish DVR system freeing up more room on it to record other shows in the future.
After having it for ONE MONTH it did NOT play back Spiderman 3 and SONY told me "It won't be able to play some DVDs"....HUH? A DVD player that can NOT play new DVDs?!?!?!

HBS-110 not quite there...........2007-06-02
This new unit is very well made and user friendly in use. I like the outboard 110v charger, but some will prefer the USB charger route, which this unit does not have.
The headphones don't fit very well and the sound quality is fine for speech or phone use, but seems lacking to me as far as music reproduction goes. There is plenty of volume available. But, there is no way to attach a different set of headphones to it, as there is no jack...they are hard wired.
I'd like it a lot better if it had good ear-buds, or a way for the user to change to the headset they preferred...and better sound quality for music.
