Amazon spacs are wrong...Need to update firmware.......2007-11-18
Previous reviewers are right -- the HDMI capable player is the SD-6000. The SD-4000 is about half the price at Best Buy. I got mine for about $42 including sales tax. I have read all of the reviews and seen the complaints about the audio-synch problem, but I have not experienced it myself. Nevertheless, Toshiba has posted a firmware upgrade on its Canada support site that I downloaded and installed. Presumably, this will take care of the problem, if it ever existed with this player. At the price, you can't go wrong. Here is the firmware upgrade URL:

DOES NOT WORK.......2007-11-17
I bought this dvd player and the mouths do not match the words even on brand new dvds. Sometimes the mouths and words would match at first but they would drift further apart as the movie went on. I returned it for a refund. I guess I've learned my lesson, it's not worth buying a cheap dvd player, and certainly not Toshiba. Toshiba SD-4000 Progressive Scan DivX Certified DVD Player
poorly designed.......2007-11-10
The Good:
It will almost play anything you put into it.
THE BAD:
This unit has given me more problems than anything i have ever owned. It has no real functions on the face (play-eject), the coax out for digital audio causes a high pitched ringing when it is paused or stopped. This sound from the digital connection will break glasses in your home, and make your ears bleed if you have a large home theater system! Also you can not pick, switch, or program this unit with out it hooked up to the TV, that is the only place you can see anything, since the display shows you nothing.
I switched the unit for another, and I got the same high pitched thing in both units, so i returned it for a full refund!
So far so good.......2007-10-26
I don't have a box any more and never got the user manual with it, so I cannot say anything about promised features vs. actual features...
Having said that, I needed a RELIABLE DVD player, as I've yet to find one that lasts more then six months. This player worked fine so far; it's been only a few weeks since I bought it, so I will write a follow up in a few months.
The good thing about this DVD is that it plays AVI files straight from a CD or DVD, as well as DivX files. It only doesn't like multisession discs which is understandable (it will only read whatever was first recorded on the disc). One thing I really like about this dvd player is that it powers off automatically after not being used for a while (like half an hour I think), which should extend it's lifespan. My previous DVD player didn't do this, and I think that made it age a lot faster.
IMPORTANT: out of the box, this player will stretch 16:9 (anamorphic) dvd picture to fill in the screen of a regular TV. I hated this, and was just about to return the player because the picture is stretched out as a result and all humans look like aliens... In any case, after searching a little through the menus, I found a setting that will get rid of the problem: it's called something like "fill picture horizontaly". The default option called something like "leave the picture as is" actually doesn't leave the picture "as is" but stretches it vertically, resulting in ugly distorted picture. Obviosly a design flaw, but solvable. Makes one wonder - don't they check the functions of their own product?
Because of that I gave the SD-4000 four stars. As far as working well and being reliable - so far so good.
Update Dec.16.2007:
So far so good. We've been using this DVD player on daily basis, since we don't watch cable TV almost at all the player is playing something at least 4-6 hours per day, sometimes even more. We also played quite a few AVI files on it, and everything went well.
The only thing is that sometimes it's picture gets a little scrambled; this seems to happen because of dirty discs, rather then because of a faulty unit. And even when that happens, simply eject the disc and put it back in after wiping it off.
Since it is being heavily used and is working fine, I still recommend this DVD player highly.
Not media friendly .......2007-10-04
Too many issues with reading disks. I burn my own, buy and rent and I have trouble on and off with all types of disks. I had 2 previous models of this unit that locked up on me frequently. I sent both back. In fairness to Toshiba they have excellent customer service. I guess you need to spend >100$ to get a good DVD player. I'm going with OPPO next. They have excellent reviews on thier players. No DVD player is perfect but I expect them to at least play OEM disks I bought.
