Paid too much for USB, and not upto expectation.......2007-03-09
I paid so much only because it has USB port. I thought I can just hook in my USB hard drive to play anything I want. But it can only read Flash drives. I tried playing some movies in my 2GB flash drive. It didn't work because it was in data format.
I still have to spend my time in buring CDs to play. USB is waste. Non-USB players are very cheap compare to this one.
Paid extra for the feature which is useless.

It has many great features, but the quality is very bad. During our first trip, after hours contineous playing, it at first gave white screen, and then won't read any disks. I could not find any manufacture warranty on it and could not find any useful information on their website! Not recommended!

The first trip was fine although the battery life was a little short (barely enough for one 120 minute movie). However, on the second trip (a little over 30 days later) the player will reset after 20-30 minutes of playback. Would not recommend.

I got a great deal on this unit. I have had it for 5 months and used it quite a bit with no problems at all.
good:
- big 8 inch screen
- pretty easy to use
- battery lasts 2.5-3 hours
- sound is good for such small speakers
not as good:
- screen isn't great - less resolution than my laptop and contrast is just ok. However I think this is typical on these low cost units
- battery dies if you leave it off and in a bag for a couple of weeks.
I bought it for well under $100 on sale so I am very pleased with the purchase.

we bought this with the intent for our summer trips, and our daughter has been using it non-stop until the sound system died. we had not even had it a month and it stopped working. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Wow this is great!
Got it in the mail, unpacked it, plugged it in, copied my whole document folder from my laptop to the ion drive, and everything was done in about 5 minutes for all my docs, pics, music, pdfs... What an easy way to do back ups. Nothing to install. Hot pluggable. Instantly recognized.
The installation CD that came with the package is clearly stated as only required for installation onto Mac systems and Windows 98. I have windows XP and therefore no need to install anything.
Remember that this is a harddrive spinning at thousands of rpm, so treat it gently and it should last. It is for that reason that I never operate my laptop on trains, buses, and airplanes. Just shut it down before you move the computer; it is just plain common sense if you don't want the hard drive to crash.
This drive was described on the package as 60 GB, it fact it contains 2 seperate drives: a 29GB and a 26GB (as I recall). Or it could have been a single drive partitioned. Either way, it does not really add up to the full "60GB". Nevertheless I am still extremely satisfied, especially for such a super low price offered on Amazon.

I have two of the 80 gig Ion drives -- I've had them for about a year and find them to be reliable, easy to use and very convenient. My favorite and most-used external drives. Almost like having a super high-capacity thumb drive, because you don't need an external power supply, and they are super-portable. They feel very solid, and I like the snug sleeve they come with also.
I use them to back up files I'm working on, and to transport them. These are great for regularly backing up working projects, because it's a lot easier to hook up than a big external drive, hunting for the power cord, and a place to plug it in, etc, so I'm more likely to actually do the back-up, more often.
Goes beautifully between my laptop and desktop computers. Not every usb cable I try will work with these, but the ones that came with them work great, and other cables which came from items which need to be powered through their usb connection also work. So perhaps it is that the cable you use needs to be designed to work with usb-powered devices. BTW I always use the 'safely remove hardware' option on my computer, it's just good, safe practice.
Great Drive - Am Getting A 2nd One.......2007-02-07
I purchased this drive a few months ago, and it does everything it is supposed to do with my 2 HP laptops. I do have an older Dell desktop 8200 with USB 1.0 connections. I have a USB 2.0 card installed, but the drive would not work with the 2.0 card. I called tech support and they told me that the cards do not provide enough power to run the unit, so they sent me a y-cable, FREE, to use with the 2.0 card. The Y-cable connects to both the USB card and an unused mouse or keyboard port. It works great. I would give it 4 stars for the power issue, but because tech support was so quick to respond with the free cable, I give it 5 stars.

Problem with this drive. It does not work with a standard USB cable included. Must have a Y cable that was sent to me after several calls to IOGear's tech support. It took a return and 30 days to get this product to work. After that it is working fine! Good luck!

Bought it Oct 2005. I moved within the same company to another city and used it to transfer all my work files. What a lifesaver! The drive has worked great, it is small enough to carry to and from work everyday and I'm using it to work from home or while traveling. I don't worry anymore about not being able to have the big files, graphics I need or burning CD's of data. It works fine with my work desktop and (IBM) my home laptop (Toshiba)
