Wide angle on film, Normal view on Digital.......2007-12-31

I bought this lens used, so it was an even better value. On 35mm Nikon cameras, such as the N8080 or N80, this is an excellent wide angle lens. On digital SLRs like the D70 and D80, it is more of a "normal" zoom lens of about 30mm to 50mm. That makes this lens much less useful on the digital Nikons (except the new D3, but then if you can afford THAT camera, you're not likely to be looking for budget lenses, are you?).
However I do enjoy using this lens on my D70. Focusing is very fast and accurate, though much louder than my 18-70mm Nikon lens.
On a film body this lens gets very interesting indeed! Super wide at 19mm, and still very fast at 3.5, you get an expansive view.
There is some barrel distortion at the widest setting, but it's not much worse than the Nikon 18-70 lens, which is to say it's very good, and not likely to be noticed on most photos.
Build quality is about the same as current Nikon consumer grade zooms, which is to say nothing spectacular. This vivitar DOES have a metal lens mount, unlike a lot of current cheap Nikon lenses. It's a good thing to have! It mounted smoothly and effortlessly on Nikon D70, D80, FM2, FE2 and N8008s bodies. The more expansive Tamron 19-35mm zoom was difficult to mount on a D80, and seems to have worse interface ability than this Vivitar.
For my money, if I had the cash of course I'd buy a Nikon. However this Vivitar is no slouch, and much better than other comparable budget zooms.
Pick one up, use it until you can afford a Nikon. However don't be surprised if once you get this lens buying an official Nikon lens seems irrelevant.

I own to SLR cameras and three lenses for them all made by vivitar and I just bought the Vivitar 19-35mm Series One Zoom Lens and as expected it works great just as I expected. In all I think I got my money's worth for this great lens.
