Key technology Features and Supported Formats:
DTS-ES 96/24: There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There's also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the ""96/24"" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).
Dolby Digital: DVD players with this logo are capable of transmitting a Dolby Digital signal (in coaxial and/or optical format) to a receiver or processor. The receiver or processor must be able to decode Dolby Digital signals to properly reproduce the audio.
JPG: JPG is a standard image format used in today's digital cameras and personal computers. DVD players that carry this logo are able to read CD-R/RWs that contain JPG image information and display slide shows on your television (such as recent vacations, family photos, etc.).
Progressive Scan: By ""painting"" an entire frame at once, scan-lines commonly associated with interlaced video are drastically reduced. The result is a spectacularly clear image with no motion artifacts, and details so sharp they seem as if they're etched onto the screen.
HDMI: HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) This high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data—more than twice what's needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound—can be handled, with room for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video quality available.
HDMI is fully backward compatible with PCs,displays and consumer electronics devices incorporating the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard. Both HDMI and DVI were pioneered by Silicon Image and are based on TMDS®, Silicon Image's powerful, high-speed, serial link technology. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, and with 5 Gbps of bandwidth, HDMI can accommodate future enhancements and requirements. Because HDMI was designed specifically for consumer electronics applications, it offers an array of additional consumer enhancements. As digital content can manifest itself in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, HDMI-enabled systems will automatically configure to display content in the most effective format. MP3: This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.
WMA: This audio compression format from Microsoft® allows you to reduce the size of your audio files for storage on your computer's hard drive or portable devices. This allows you to store many more songs than with uncompressed CD audio, using the same amount of disc space or memory. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in WMA format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

Astonishing Picture Quality.......2007-01-09
I do read the other reviewer's complaint about picture quality. But it's not the case to me.
I bought a SONY SXRD Full HD TV during the thanksgiving sales (11/2006) and then I decided to take advantage of its HDMI input. After some online research, I chose this Onkyo HDMI player to replace my YAMAHA 480P DVD Player. After one month usage, watching at least 15 DVDs, I must say, this Onkyo outperforms my old Yamaha A LOT in terms of picture quality!!
To get the best quality, you must have a HDMI cable and set the output to 1920x1080i. I also tried 720P but I can easily notice a picture downgrade. If you don't have a Full HD, I would say 720p should look better than 1080i.
The picture quality is so great! I don't know if it's because my new TV or the new dvd player but many of my friends who watch the movie with me agree with my opinion. Some even say they have illusion of watching HD-DVD sometimes. I know it's a little bit exaggerated.
As to audio, I have an Onkyo amplifier and Polk 5.1 system. Comparing to the previous Yahama, it sounds the same. I am not a picky person to audio so I am very satisfied with Onkyo. It only has the coaxial output but doesn't have an optical output. It's not a matter to me because I heard digital audio thru coaxial sounds smoother than that thru optical. My old yamaha also has coaxial output only so basically it's not an issue for me.
This player plays everything. It supports DivX so you can play any mpeg and avi on a DVD+-R or CD. The best part is, it can even upconvert the picture to 1920x1080i, which is a big bonus to me. It solves the edge cutting problem I had on my Yahama due to resolution incompatibility. DivX on 1080i looks much better than 480p.
Last thing, you can make this player region free thru your remote controller. It's another reason I chose Onkyo instead of Sony because Sony is way too complicated to make it region free.
Here is the tip.
Press SET UP on the remote.
Highlight INITIAL SETTING and press ENTER.
Highlight OPTION and then press DISPLAY button on the remote.
The Firmware and region code will be displayed.
Press 3690 on the remote.
The machine will go into standby.
It is now region free.
It will not show anything different in the menu though.
I love this DVD player and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good quality HDMI upconverting player.
