With most entry-level DVD players, you're only able to watch video playback in standard definition. If you've already invested in an HDTV or planning to in the near future, the DV-SP404 will take standard DVDs to high-definition quality by converting to 720p or 1080i through the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) on the rear. Also, with a 108 MHz/12-bit video DAC supporting progressive scan, you're assured of spectacular viewing time-after-time. The DV-SP404 will do what you expect from higher-priced players, and it will also serve as a capable playback device for all your audio sources from your own CD library or computer-based digital files. Easily matched with AV receivers up to the high-end range, the DV-SP404 is a worthy addition to any home entertainment system.
Key technology Features:
DTS-ES 96/24: There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There's also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the ""96/24"" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).
Dolby Digital: DVD players with this logo are capable of transmitting a Dolby Digital signal (in coaxial and/or optical format) to a receiver or processor. The receiver or processor must be able to decode Dolby Digital signals to properly reproduce the audio.
JPG: JPG is a standard image format used in today's digital cameras and personal computers. DVD players that carry this logo are able to read CD-R/RWs that contain JPG image information and display slide shows on your television (such as recent vacations, family photos, etc.).
Progressive Scan: By "painting" an entire frame at once, scan-lines commonly associated with interlaced video are drastically reduced. The result is a spectacularly clear image with no motion artifacts, and details so sharp they seem as if they're etched onto the screen.
HDMI: HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) This high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data—more than twice what's needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound—can be handled, with room for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video quality available.
MP3: This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.
VLSC: Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can't remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s!

I have no complaints about this mode. It is very important to read the manual several times before making the settings. Some settings that are default prevent other settings from working. For instance, HDMI is the default which sets a limit on the quality of the component analog output in both resolution and progressive scanning. Another example is that if you only have stereo speakers you have to turn off the other three in order to have good audio on program material set up for five audio channels.
Finicky.......2007-03-25
I ended up replacing the first one I ordered because of several issues. It turns out the player is very finicky about what it can play as the replacement has the same issues.
Update: I've now had the player for about 6 months. The player has a knack for freezing up ocassionally, requiring me to unplug the unit to reset. Turning off the unit when this happens is impossilbe since all the controls are locked. I'd like to reduce the number of stars I gave to 2, maybe even 1 but Amazon will only allow be to edit the text. I would not buy this player again. I've contacted customer service at Onkyo and the service tech tells me if I don't like it, to buy something else. Nice huh?
DVD - Not all disks play.
I hooked up the DVD player using a single HDMI cable. This cable carries both video and audio 5.1. The HDMI cable is not included. The player worked great for the first 6 movies I tried, but did not play the 7th. We ended up watching the movie on the old Sony the Onkyo was supposed to replace.
SACD - Not all disks play
I purchased three SACD's so I could enjoy 5.1 surround sound music. 5.1 can only be achieved using the 6 analog outs, not any of the digital outputs including the HDMI, coax, or optical. My reciever is new enough to have 6 inputs for "multi channel" sources, but it adds 6 cables, one for each audio channel. These 6 cables are not included.
I bought Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", and Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" on SACD format. The later two played in both 5.1 surround and normal stereo (if selected), but the Dark Side gave the player a "CD Error". I could play the disk on a standard player stereo so I'm not sure if the disk is bad or the same disk problem I had for DVD's is persistent with SACD's.
MP3 disks - not all mp3's are created equal.
The player will only work on "virgin" mp3's. I made several mp3 disks using iTunes from CD's I have in my collection. I then used a volume leveling program since my collection has greatly varying sound levels which can jar the listener. I used mp3gain which works great for all my other players (Alpine Car stereo and Yamaha portable DVD)but not the Onkyo. mp3gain adds extra information to the tag which appears to cause errors. The Onkyo can only read non-volume adjusted mp3's.
DivX - Not in North America
While the product description states the player is DivX playable, it is not in North America. This feature is disabled for anyone buying the US model. This is stated in the manual. The Amazon description is for the European version, which is not shipped to you.
Summary
Not sure it's worth the money frankly. I'd like to be able to put in a disk and have it play. I don't want to worry about whether it will or won't play a disk depending upon how it was made. My other players work without issues so why can't Onkyo make a unit that works all the time.

Definitely a great crisp picture from this DVD player. I'm running this HDMI through a HLS-5687W Samsung DLP and it looks great. Startup is a little slow but everything else I've seen makes this a great upconverting DVD player. Soon to test a Blu-ray player against this, and will update further if needed.
