Panasonic DMRE85HS Progressive-Scan DVD Player/Recorder with 120 GB Hard Drive Recording

Product Description

Panasonic DMR-E85HS is a progressive-scan DVD video recorder with built-in 120 GB hard disk and TV Guide On Screen. It records to DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs.

Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's top-of-the line, fifth-generation DMR-E85HS DVD recorder packs a built-in 120 GB hard drive capable of storing up to 213 hours--more than 11 straight days--of audio/video programming in EP mode. So whether you're seeking the time-shifted TV viewing abilities of a VCR-like DVR or you want to archive your home movies to long-lasting DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs, this is the recorder for you.

But it doesn't just slice and dice. The DMR-E85HS is also a progressive-scan DVD player for use with standard and high-definition or HD-ready TVs. It handles your DVDs, CDs, and homemade MP3 discs, as well as high-resolution DVD-Audio discs, which specialize in multichannel music mixes with quality surpassing that found on commercial CDs.

Just like with a DVR, you can schedule the recording of TV programming through the DMR-E85HS's user-friendly onscreen guide.

The DMR-E85HS offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, generally regarded as the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats. DVD-RAM offers high storage capacity, high-speed data transmission, exceptional picture and sound quality, fast random-access memory, and rewritability up to 100,000 times. DVD-RAM recording time extends to 16 hours per disc in EP mode on 9.4 GB double-sided media.

You can program the recorder for daily or one-time broadcasts much as you would a VCR. To simplify programming, the DMR-E85HS includes the TV Guide On Screen Electronic Programming Guide. With DVD-RAM, you can even perform simple nonlinear video editing, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, and creating custom play lists of favorite scenes on a disc.

One touch of a button is all it takes to record data from the DMR-E85HS's hard disk drive to a DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc at high speeds. You can blaze along at a quick 12x normal speed when writing to DVD-RAM, or 24x normal speed when going from the hard disk to DVD-R (in EP mode, both cases). For example, you can burn a one-hour program to DVD-RAM in just 5 minutes, or to DVD-R in just 2.5 minutes.

Panasonic's Time Slip feature lets you use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder, or PVR. Because of DVD-RAM's extremely fast transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the program in progress.

With Chasing Playback, you can view the recorded portion of a live program, from the beginning, while continuing to record that program until its completion. Simultaneous record & play lets you view a previously recorded program on either a DVD-RAM disc or the hard disk drive while simultaneously recording a different program.

Relief Recording automatically checks the remaining disc space when recording to DVD-RAM or DVD-R. If there's not enough space, the video recorder shifts the balance of the recording to the hard drive.

The Chasing Playback feature lets you watch the program you're recording from the beginning while it's still in progress.

In addition to recording new video content, the DMR-E85HS lets you transfer your favorite VHS recordings to durable, space-saving discs. You can archive, preserve, and easily catalog and accessed your personal movie libraries and family videos.

The recorder comes with a new Direct Navigator that simplifies the process of previewing recorded programs, letting you access recorded material from an onscreen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels, and titles. Finding and viewing recorded material is simple because there's no need to search, fast-forward, or rewind.

DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound. DVD-Audio discs providemultichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.

What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, a remote control, remote batteries, an RF audio/video in a stereo analog audio/composite-video interconnect, an AC power cord, a user's manual, and a registration card.

3 out of 5 stars not very reliable.......2007-06-01

I have had this unit for 2 years or more and it was great compared to using a VCR, in many ways, but I find that it isn't very reliable for recording everything I program in. Whether it is programmed by using the TV Guide listings or by putting in the time and dates myself, it will sometimes just skip a program I want recorded. I think that the causes can be that sometimes the TV Guide listing goes out or the tv channels do not match exactly what my channels are. Also, there are times when it thinks I don't get a channel that I do get and I have to go in and turn that channel on. If it would stay on, that wouldn't be so bad, but this thing is always having to be reset to get the channels back for TV Guide.

Why can't some company design a recorder that has a hard drive and dvd but can also use a cable card?

1 out of 5 stars Full of problems.......2007-05-29

I've had the DMR E85H for over two years now and it is terrible. It locks up, takes a long time to power up, once you power up about 50% of the time the remote only partially works and I need to power down, and back on (another 2-3 minutes wait), to see if I can set it up to record something now. Many many people on forums all talk about these problems and how Panasonic doesn't back this up, hides the firmware updates. I did return my first unit to the store and got a 2nd one. It does has the exact same problems - it's not my machine, it's all of them. I'll never buy Panasonic again.

The only good thing if I am patient and don't miss the first part of the show because of the problems, it does seem to record and play back nicely. I just can't believe that they would release the recorder with as many problems as it has.

1 out of 5 stars NOT RELIABLE - I just found problems, read first.......2007-05-12

I got mine in summer 2005, since always I found problems. First, when I press the REC button on the box just don't start recording even after few seconds, I try everything, this happens random. Second, when I got recording I'm not able stop recording with the remote, the times I tested pressing remote buttons I ended always with wrong video output to my plasma screen ???? very weird. And some few other issues like menu operation and programs not beeing recorded as previous user instructions trough the program menu.

Now isn't reliable anymore, all the other problems I could live with, but now is impossible, example, I programm any recording for movie or tv show (lets say for 90 minutes) I endup with that 90 minutes movie saved in just 20 (TWENTY) minutes ???? We start watching the saved movie and after 2 minutes of play we get a jump/gap of large pieces of scenes ???

First I tough maybe the Hard Disk Drive need some REFORMAT to clean the FAT (File Allocation Table) due to the extensive use I gave to the recorder as I put it to save one movie/tv show per day.

BUT seems not the case, after clean and reformat the Hard Disk Drive, I tested again with more movies and tv shows and the problem remains randomly, the HD is getting some kind of failure or the recorder is getting himself some software/hardware problem.

Isn't reliable at all. Due to the new models outside I'm leaving Panasonic and looking into Sony's new HDMI models.

3 out of 5 stars Very Tempermental Panasonic DVR.......2007-03-10

I bought my E85HS over a year ago and from the start have had problems with the TV Guide feature. Now as of March 2007 it does not work at all and with 2 hours into tech support it doesn't appear it will be working anytime soon. This TV guide access is an important feature of the programming of this machine if you desire automatic recording.
The first failure in 2005 the tech had me plug the unit directly into the cable line ahead of the Comcast cable box. Well that worked for a year and now nothing. The next call to the techs had me reset the unit using the up/down channel arrows and then I was told to wait 48 hours before even turning it on. Two days later nothing.
This unit plays well, it recorded well, and the manual though too intense was readable and a necessity to learn how to operate it.
I find after two years people are complaining across the board about most of the Panasonic DVR's not working with the TV guide set up. Panasonic has a better reputation than this. This should have been solved over a year ago. Yet I see here on Amazon that people are having the same trouble with the newer units as well.
The tech support was always accessible and appeared to really want to help but the engineering of this platform is HALF BAKED at best.
I would tell everyone not to buy right now until this problem is solved for all units.
Also a tip off came with my last call to Panasonic, the tech told me the next generation will have "digital tuners" so that you can access channels above 200. While that would be nice digital cable has been around for awhile now and Panasonic should have been on top of this not lagging behind. I thought for the money this unit would have access to all of the cable programming except HiDef but I was wrong and dissappointed.
I am also told that Panasonic makes the rental units for Comcast and I have had friends who have them report the same trouble and also that if their unit calls for a download of TV Guide during a recording event then the machine just shuts off in the middle of the recording.
Now today wouldn't you know it, I turned it on after writing this and its working again. Its set to program a recording tomorrow we'll see.
Its hard to tell if the fault lies with Panasonic, or TV Guide/Gemstar or Comcast. You have 3 vendors involved in this mess.

2 out of 5 stars BEWARE if you are in Denver/Boulder - no TV Guide listings.......2006-10-18

I have owned this unit for nearly two years, have called customer support several times (they are friendly and fairly knowledgeable) and have never been able to use TV Guide listings because of an apparent incompatibility with Comcast's signal and this unit. Now, I can "rent" a DVR unit from Comcast that DOES work with their TV Guide signal (a Panasonic even!) but I dislike the idea of getting rid of this unit after investing a decent amount of $$ into it. If it weren't for this major problem, I'd be very happy with the unit.
