Feature List
- Play DVD, (S)VCD, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, CD(RW) and Picture CD
Micro system's integrated DVD player provide an attractive combination with its classic design. Video fans and music lovers can benefit from the widely accepted DVD and CD formats, and the increasing popularity of MP3 and WMA digital music. It plays all CD-formats; DVD-Video discs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, Audio CDs, CD(RW) MP3 CDs, WMA-CD and Picture CD.
- 12-bit/108MHz video processing for sharp, natural images
12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
- Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
- Dolby Digital for ultimate movie experience
Because Dolby Digital, the world's leading digital multi-channel audio standards, make use of the way the human ear naturally processes sound, you experience superb quality surround sound audio with realistic spatial cues.
- Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter for impressive audio fidelity
The Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter is a monopole tweeter that produces dynamic and crisp sound from the front. It is a feature commonly used in high-end audio systems to reproduce sound with excellent fidelity. Conventional cones and dome tweeters are based on a directional moving coil principle whereas the monopole Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter radiates high frequencies in a full 180-degree radiation pattern. This dramatically increases the width of the sound spectrum in the higher tones and expands the sweet spot zone to deliver wide, crystal-clear, and natural sound even from compact audio systems.
- Real rosewood speaker enclosure for perfect sound quality
The speaker enclosure is made of the real, natural rosewood. Its stiffness and density are both excellent acoustic damping properties for perfect quality sound reproduction. Part of the manufacturing process involves hand-making to ensure a super quality finish.
- Gold-plated speaker connector for finest signal transmission
The Gold-plated speaker connector ensures better audio signal transmission compared to traditional click-fit connections. It also minimizes the electrical signal loss from the amplifier to the speaker box, resulting in sound reproduction that's as close to reality as possible.
- Loudness for bass and treble enhancement
In the sound spectrum, high and low frequencies are relatively less audible to human ears - especially at low volumes. By activating the Loudness feature, the bass and treble will be amplified so you can savor a more balanced sound perception overall.
- 2x25W RMS/50W Total Power
- High-end component design with stand
The component-designed DVD micro system comes with a stand that features four triangular feet. It can prevent any audio frequency distortion due to vibration, overheating and electromagnetic interference generated from the amplifier and DVD loader. The result is smooth and excellent and sound reproduction.
- High quality remote control for comfortable use

Should be better - for $200.......2006-12-22
I was looking for a small unobtrusive shelf system to use in my study. The unit had to have at least one set of aux imputs, and it had to have small footprint; no more than 12" deep. While the Philips fit the bill, (it has 2 sets aux imputs) I didn't care for the "open face" of the speakers. The DVD capability was an extra that I doubt I'll ever use.
The sound from the enclosed speakers is fine, expecailly at soft listneing levels. I replaced their speakers with a pair of TEAC speakers from another set. They have black grill cloths and sound as good if not better.
The other negative, albiet a small one, is the clock which is only programed in 24 hour format. So 3PM is 1500 hours on the their clock! Great if you live outside the US, but a rather dumb move for our market.
As to price, the usual price is around $200. I wouldn't spend that much for the unit unless you really want the DVD capability in a very small unit. But remember, you won't get surround sound (5 speaker capbility) with this set. Simply 2 channel audio no matter what the source material is. I paid $160 at a national electronics store. At that price it is worth the money.
Decent System for the price and speaker size.......2006-08-10
I have had the MCD702 for about three weeks now and played a number of CD's various genres including classical such as Beethoven's 5th and 6th(Karajan, 1982, as well as various rock CD's from Yes, U2, Neil Young (grunge and ballads), the Cure and other artists. I also sampled some Celtic music. I noticed that the speakers sound tinny and muffled when none of the DSP/Loudness/DBB settings were employed at either low or middle volume levels in my office, a 1950's era 12x10 bedroom. However, I noticed a significant improvement when any of the DSP/Loudness/DBB settings were employed even at the lowest levels and can play most cd's at the 3 or 4 level at acceptable sound levels and with decent/ perhaps even good sound quality. I found the video acceptable through my TV Tuner card to my 17 inch CRT. I did notice a delay between the sound and the video, but I suspect it is TVTuner card related and expect this to be resolved when I hook the system direct to a flat screen monitor/TV.
I did not observe any problems playing older cd's with some scratches as well as any problems playing CD-R's.
I did notice that not all of the buttons on the remote work on that receiver such as the "Surround" and the "Vol.Sel". These seem to be features supported on other Philips models and the manual does not refer to them. The manual does imply that not all buttons on the remote worked on every unit. I infer from this that that remote is designed for use with a number of disparate systems. I did notice that sometimes that I had to specifically select the mode (tuner, disc, etc) before I was able to enter the command on the remote I wanted.
The FM tuner seemed to be average, and comparable to my older componet receivers and tuners.
I am a little disappointed in that the product literature states that the amplifier is rated at 50 total watts, yet the manual stated the receiver is rated at 22 watts RMS per channel. I do realize that is not a significant difference musically and sonic wise, but I do not appreciate the discrepancy.
Overall, it seems to be a very flexible sytem offering a decent value at about $200. I would probably buy the system again.
Nice little bookshelf system.......2006-06-18
This little system has clean lines and very good sound for its size and cost. The speakers are well balanced and have a warm and comfortable midrange that makes the system easy on the ears. I use the system with a computer and a Dell 2405 FPW monitor. The composite video output is very sharp and together the two make for a nice desktop entertainment system. The price is right and the build quality is high. Audiophiles might find the power lacking, but for a desktop entertainment system the Philips MCD708 is a good choice.

The use of aspherical lens allows a large aperture F2.8 (at the wide-angle setting) in a compact body. It also reduces aberration and improves optical performance. SIGMA's unique four-group zoom system satisfactorily compensates for astigmatic aberration and distortion aberration throughout the zoom range.
Amazon.com Product Description
Sigma's 28-105mm f3.8-5.6 aspherical macro lens has an impressively flexible shooting range of 28-105mm. This lens is ideal for nature photographers wanting close-ups of plants and animals, yet equally suited for those who prefer landscapes, portraits, and snapshots.
Though containing some of its predecessors' strengths, such as a 19.7-inch close-focus range, this model gives you the slightly larger maximum aperture of f3.8-f5.6 and a lighter weight. The use of aspherical optics and a new mechanical construction in the design can be credited with the reduction in weight. Despite its compact size, just under three inches, this lens maintains the high level of performance for which its predecessors are known. The internal focusing system allows for a nonrotating front barrel, making for the convenient use of filters. This model is dedicated to Minolta AF SLR cameras.

The lens that stays on my Nikon.......2005-06-02
I've been taking photos with an SLR for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, I've always been on a tight budget and could never afford the best lenses.
I've owned this lens for about eight years now. It is THE lens that remains on my Nikon 99% of the time. I've used it in some gritty situations - in Iraq, Brazil, the California desert and all across the US as I traveled.
I have to disagree with an earlier reviewer who stated you "need" another lens. I have a Nikon made zoom that goes past 200mm and I think I've used it three times at most. This Sigma is my work horse. Its wide angle is perfect for landscapes and close ups. The longer range is just what you need for portraits. I don't shoot sports or wildlife so anything beyond 105 is overkill for me.
One of the great features of this lens is the 2.8 aperature at 28mm. You're forced to use 4.0 or smaller as you zoom, but this is still fine for portraits and a blurred background.
If you're still using a 35mm and you're on a budget this is a great lens to have. It hasn't failed me yet in eight years.
Worth the money.......2004-12-01
A friend of mine asked me to shoot her wedding (so she could save some money). I obliged, but panicked due to my lack of equipment.
After much research on Amazon and various other sites, I decided to go with this lens. The first couple of times you work the zoom mechaism, there is some "stiffness" but that eventually fades, leaving a silky smooth feel. The zoom ring has a nice, high quality rubber coating for added control.
Sizewise, it's fairly compact and light. I also own a Sigma 28mm F1.8 aspherical lens (no zoom) for the same camera and they are about the same size, length wise, and similar in weight. I found the overal auto-focus time to be a bit slow...but that's likely a byproduct of the older camera body rather than the lens.
Overall, it was a great buy. The pictures came out beautifully! And the company that this product ships through turns out to be a fairly reputable company. Highly recommended.
a fine lens indeed..........2002-08-17
This lens turned out to work far better than I expected. It really is a fine piece of work. I prefer to use it in manual focus mode because all the mechanical parts are smooth and precise, unlike most cheap AF zooms these days. The AF part is noticeably faster than Nikon's entry-level 50mm lens.
An excellent "universal" lens.......2001-02-12
I have always been a fan of Minolta bodies and Sigma lenses - they work great together (currently I have a Minolta Maxxum XTsi). This lens is certainly no exception. In fact, this one is the best lens I've had. I was so impressed with this lens, that I have all but stopped using any other lens. The aspherical capabilities allow me to get in real close to my subject and come out with a very clear photo.
This lens has a lot to offer........2000-10-08
Don't overlook this lens. It does not have the longest zoom range available. But the F2.8 maximum aperature, the very serviceable 28-105mm range, the weight and size, the high quality of material and optics, and the price make this a pleasure to use and carry. If you want to carry only one lens, you need a longer range than this one has. But if you are going to carry two or more lenses, this one deserves to be in your bag.

High Price, Poor Signal.......2007-08-24
Maybe I have a defective unit, but I'm lucky to get 50' through a single sheetrock wall. Signal is far weaker than a Netgear Pre-N or a cheap Linksys. I have tested it in the same building with these others, and it simply does not perform well. I get better reception from unknown wireless networks across a four lane street from my building than from this unit.
