Very bad image.......2006-04-13
I bought this DVD player from Fry's for $69 because I expected a good quality up-conversion image and it came with an HDMI cable. I also have LG LDA-511 up-converting DVD player and Cyberhome DVR1600 with the latest firmware update.
I was really surprised with a low quality substandard image from Samsung HD-755. I tried it in 1080i, 720p and 480p modes with its own HDMI cable, HDMI Monster cable and my current component cables. In all these cases the HD-755 image was much worse than Cyberhome 480p connected with a set of component cables. The picture was almost blurry without details. I tried all different setup parameters and nothing helped. It seems that the Samsung HD-755 did not pass the QC test and I returned it to Fry's. It is hard to believe that Samsung could make product of such a low quality but some other reviewers had the same experience with that player.
On the other hand, LG LDA-511 had a very high quality image in 1080i, and 720p modes with more details than Cyberhome (as expected from higher resolution images) and much better image than Samsung HD-755 but did not come with HDMI cable. The HDMI cable price is from $20 (online) to almost $200 in retail stores that sell Monster Cables only.

Great DVD player at a great price........2006-04-06
I was shopping around for a Upscaler DVD for my HDTV set, and found this unit at Frye's for 69 bucks. I was cautious at first, because I wanted something that would make the most of my home theater experience. The unit was easy to hook up, and I would have given it 5 stars if they would have supplied an HDMI to DVI cable with it.
The resolution was noticeable for the start; although, not a completely awe inspiring difference it does show a better picture than my regular Sony DVD player. The menu is easy to work with, and I like all the options. As far as DTS, and 5.1 audio are concerned, my Sony home theater system picked them up just fine. You will only need to make sure you pick the CORRECT options on the DVD, and your home theater system.
In all, I am very satisfied with my new DVD player. It is not true HD, but I ain't going to run out and buy myself a true HD Player (with "Bluetooth" technology) for a 1,000 bucks, and switch my DVD collection to that format anytime soon either. This unit fits my needs just fine.
"Up-conversion" is useless technology.......2006-03-21
OK, maybe I'm on a little bit of a "jihad" here against these up-converting DVD players, but bear with me because I do have a valid point.
Don't buy any DVD player because it can "up-convert to HD". Evaluate all DVD players on whether they do everything else well, or have the connections you need (DVI, HDMI, etc.) or the price is in your budget. This may be a fine DVD player, but don't buy it just because it can up-convert, and don't use the up-convert capabilities of this player even if you do buy it.
If your TV can accept 720p or higher input via DVI or HDMI, then it is already scaling the image to fit the native resolution of the display device. And I guarantee you it is doing a better job of it than any sub-200 dollar DVD player is going to do. (If not, then your HDTV was poorly made).
My final point: If this up-coverting technology is such a good idea, why is Samsung the only one doing it? Why not Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, JVC, and Denon? (Because they know it's usless technology).

Bought this at Fry's in San Jose, CA for $69. It came with HDMI cable, which I use to connect this sleek DVD player to my Samsung HLR4667W DLP TV and I couldn't be happier about its performance. Picture is terrific and so is sound. Don't believe the reviewer, Cliff The Engineer, because this DVD player does support Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio when connected to an a/v receiver which supports these formats. (One should read the manual or play with the easy menu options to figure out how to set it up for Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS before making such false statements.)
As always, to get good quality video, if your TV supports HDMI, use HDMI. If not use the next best, component video output. S-video is the third choice while composite video (1 yellow cable) is the last choice.
Simlarly, for audio, toslink cable (which this DVD player does not support) is the best. Second choice is coaxial digital audio cable and the regular red/white (L/R RCA) cable the last resort. Both toslink cable and coaxial digital audio cable--just like HDMI cable--can pass Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS signal from this DVD player.
No Dolby 5.1/DTS through HDMI.......2006-02-05
This piece of *?^%$ does not support Dolby 5.1/DTS through HDMI. The workaround listed by the other reviewer is correct, you use the digital Coax for sound, HDMI for video only. The downsides:
- The delay in the audio makes everything look like poor lip-sync
- Have to switch both receiver and TV when going from cable to DVD
- Extra cables to deal with. (BTW - the coax signal is digital. Use the cheapest cable you can get, if it is short).
Another problem: If you put MP3's into it, you navigate subdirectories with names in 8-character format, so the filenames are jibberish.
Got it at Fry's for $69, with HDMI cable. Not worth it, even at that price.
