Standing less than 2.5 inches tall, Samsung's stylishly black DVD-R145 is one of the most powerful entertainment recording and playback devices available today. It offers the widest assortment of DVD recording compatibility, featuring DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and re-writable DVD-RAM as well as Dual-Layer DVD+/-R--enabling you to store up to 8.5 GB of video on these two-sided discs. Additionally, the DVD-R145 provides a time-slip function when recording onto DVD-RAM discs--enabling you to pause or skip backwards/forwards through a recording that's active.
The DVD-R145 is also an "upconverting" DVD player, which boosts the standard 480 lines of resolution from a DVD disc up to a high-def 1080i (interlaced) picture. To produce an upconverted picture, your high-def TV must have an HDMI connection (and HDCP support)--the 720p/1080i choice is only available when using the HDMI cable (which is not included). Also note that the DVD-HD1080 is not a high-definition DVD player (i.e., not to be confused with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, which play specially formatted high definition discs), so it will work with your existing DVD library.
A front-panel DV (FireWire IEEE 1394) input enables you to connect the family video camcorder and edit and record footage directly to a DVD disc--all via a single cable and without losing image quality. The EVQ (Enhanced Video Quality) feature provides sharper images and truer color reproduction for both movies and home videos. This unit also offers CM (commercial) advance, enabling you to skip ads from recorded TV programming recorded. Other features include CM (commercial) advance, STB (set-top box) control, and DivX playback. In addition to its ability to play back all current DVD formats, it's also compatible with CD-R/RW discs and MP3 audio and JPEG image files.
You can program recording via the timer, or choose easy one-touch recording (initiating playback at 30 minutes and adding 30 minutes with each additional press of the button, up to the available disc time or 240 minutes, whichever is sooner). Chapters are created when you record your favorite TV show or video clips from a camcorder onto a DVD disc. The chapters are automatically created, which eliminates wasted time searching the whole DVD to find the right spot. Up to 99 titles can be recorded onto one disc. With the simple and easy edit function menu, you can delete, copy, rename, and lock, among other things. You can also create a playlist and edit video in a specific sequence.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

I have owned this DVD-r for less than a year. The remote lacks enough power to even change channels from across the room, let alone make simple selections for my grandson on his Thomas video.
Last month, there was an odd issue with the door of the DVD refusing to open. Then it refused to record after it had been programmed. I thought it was operator error, but now it refuses to acknoledge that a DVD is in the drive.
I have nothing but problems with this DVD-r from day one, and it is now a useless paperweight.
Don't waste your hard earned cash on Samsung's excuse for a DVDr!

I chose this model primarily because I loved my previous Samsung product, but I would definitely not recommend this recorder. It worked "okay" for about the first 8 months - a little bit of flakiness that occasionally ruined a blank DVD, but nothing I couldn't live with. Then suddenly, without reason, a major malfunction occurred, and it would not read any discs at all. It ejected everything and said it couldn't read it. It was still under warranty, but to get it repaired I had to ship it to New Jersey and pay for the labor. Once returned, I was able to insert discs, but it was even flakier than before. Recording a disc is completely hit or miss now, with more miss than hit. Now begins the search for a replacement, and I won't be buying another Samsung.

I'm very disapointed with this DVD because:
1. Freezes with my DVD-RAM disks. I know they're better than normal RW. I send 2 times to the technic service and they recommend me to use better disks (I don't know where I can find it!!). When disconected and connected again, run normally for a while, so the technic service can't find the problem in 2 weeks and they return me. I have to film the problem to explain it, they told me have fixed the problem and now the DVD goes to the technic service for third time.
2. The remote control is UN-natural
3. Fast Forward or rewind is not FAST!!

I've had this unit for almost a year now. It's the most satistying electronic device I ever bought after my TV. like everyone who written any review about this product will admit, you can't debate on it stunning picture quality... Recently, when I complained to the tech support abut not having any play back from recordings of tv shows, they asked to try passing my cable chord from the wall through the unit to my tv instead of directly to my tv. I tried that and not only did I get great picture quality from the recordings, but I delightfully found out that the unit also has an intergrated tunner giving me better cable picture qaulity on my Samsung Plasma tv. since the unit is connected to my tv by an HDMI cable, it gives me cable tv quality in 1080i... almost acting as a cable box. I don't even use my tv remote control any more, I change channels, volume etc with my DVD recorder's remote controle. It also carries great funtion.
my opinion Samsung is the best brand out there for electronics. I also have a Samsung plasma tv and camcording enjoy the quality. their tech support is also great; very little wait time to speak with a rep. as for me, I'm sticking with Samsung.

This is an absolute, verified, certified piece of ****. I bought it to record from my other samsung product, a digital recorder (also a piece) and it stinks! The record function has more limits that a limited offer and to record off the TV you have to summon the gods with incense and sacrifice. it will not play half the discs I own which play perfectly well on my $40 target special. Did I mention this was a poor purchasing decision?

Loose Firewire Port Connectors.......2007-11-03
This drive worked great until the FW400 ports came loose. I took it apart as it was past the 1 year warranty and there is little to almost NO solder holding the port to the circuit board. Buy something that will last longer.

On mine, one of the FW400 ports fell off because there is so little solder holding the port onto the circuit board. I gave the 120GB two stars because, unlike the 250GB and 500GB in this series which I also own, it actually worked for more than 1 year and a week.

Early in 2004, my company was in the market for 2 external harddrives for back-up purposes & I, personally, was in the market for the same reason. After much research, testimonial reading & spec comparison, i chose the LaCie D2 family. In the past 8 months, i have been responsible for the purchase of 2 120 GB & 2 250 GB harddrives. I have sent 2 back to the original retail store as they failed within 2 months. I have sent 2 back to LaCie for warranty repairs. So, out of 4 drives, I have had 4 replaced. This is a BAD track record. I am waiting for my personal drive to arrive back from LaCie, at which time I will sell on ebay & use the money to do some sort of online storage service that guarantees & backs up my data.
Aside from my woes with LaCie, I have heard *horror* stories from friends & colleagues about other manufacuter's hard drives... as well as other woes with iPods, memory sticks, USB minidrives, etc etc.... So, i am generally weary of all external storage devices. REMEMBER - redundancy is ALWAYS a good thing. DO NOT put all your eggs in one basket. And, NEVER assume something is fail-proof.

I have had two failures of this model in as many years. The same-model warranty replacement was as bad as the original. I would avoid this drive and vendor until they have reestablished a reputation for a modicum of reliability.

This was my fourth and possibly last LaCie drive.
Loved the spec, size, footprint, speed and yes its fairly quiet.
Unfortunatley however, and mine is not the first story, the drive is rather inept at actually storing data.
The drive was partitioned into two drives and worked well untill it started not opening folders. Instead it returned error 'unformatted drive' messages. This then spread to the whole of one drive before the next.
From reading other reviews the problem is the power down which wrecks the drive. Nice.
