The Samsung DVD-V8650 DVD/VCR combo unit lets you enjoy both your VHS and DVD libraries with one elegantly slim component that nicely matches Samsung's line of stylish HDTVs. addition to superb 480p (progressive scan) DVD playback, the DVD-V8650 incorporates a four-head hi-fi VCR that offers three VHS recording settings (SP, SLP, and auto), auto tracking adjustment, and quasi S-VHS playback. This combo unit offers a wide spectrum of playback formats, including DVD movie, CD audio, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, DivX, MP3, WMA, and JPEG. It also includes front-panel AV inputs, enabling you to connect a digital video camcorder for easy recording to VHS tape. It has a 10-bit 54-MHz DAC for high-quality video recording and playback and optical and coaxial digital audio outputs for Dolby Digital and DTS multi-channel surround sound. The DVD-V8650 also offers a selectable progressive-scan mode for smoother video with HD-compatible TVs via the component video output (480i/480p for DVD only). Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Nice but Noisy.......2007-07-05

Works well and has nice features but is noisy. A number of other reviewers made comment on the noise and they're 100% correct and this is from a man with less than perfect hearing.

Don't buy it!!.......2006-12-11

I bought this Samsung DVD/VCR combo because I have had good Samsung products in the past, and I needed a black unit to match my other components.
I hooked it up through my home theatre system, but it only plays through the home theatre speakers if I'm playing a DVD, but not a VHS tape. When I asked Samsung's tech support why that was they replied VHS doesn't have that capability. Hmmmm, my other VHS player did...how odd.
Also, everytime I play a VHS tape, it eats the tape!!!
Also, no slow motion capability for the DVD player!!!
I'm very disappointed with this unit.

Horrible!.......2006-08-02

I never thought a piece of electronics could inspire so much hatred in me.

1st - It distorts the aspect ratio on my (very typical) TV. Messing with the settings changes distorts the problem even more but doesn't fix it.
2nd - No search buttons on DVD. Instead you have to hold down the track change buttons. God I hate that!
3rd - The search thing doesn't even work like its supposed too. You hold the button for a long time and the thing just gets really confused, spins for awhile, then spits you out to another track. And all i wanted to do was rewind a few seconds.
4th - It takes forever to load or do anything and won't play even slightly damaged discs that work fine on other players.

If you buy this you are asking for pain. Stay away!

I have 2 of the 2GB models. One for primary storage and the other for a live backup. I've had zero problems with either. They are fast and pretty quiet - plus they haven't failed. So - so far so good, for me.

I have used Lacie drives for at least 4 years. I have four 500 Gigabytes sizes, 5 single terabyte sizes and 1 two terabyte size. I have never had a problem with any of them.

Beware of this drive.......2007-10-26

I have 3 of the Lacie Bigger Disk Extreme external drive -- and have been running them all over firewire 800 which is much faster when compared to firewire or usb 2.0. However my 2TB drives have both shot cr*ps on me. My 1TB is still running fine -- but it does not really get used that much.

Lacie has swapped both drives out under warranty -- however the warranty is very lacking. You can only communicate via an online email service. Expect about a weeks worth of nonsense troubleshooting steps before they will replace the drive.

mine died within a year -- it would periodically fail, restart, vanish, reappear, before finally grinding to a perminant death. i replaced it (about four months ago) the new one is chugging along but this is really the first time i've ever had a drive fail like that. gah.

You think YOU have it bad?! The 2TB drive has failed and been shipped back to Lacie 5 TIMES now!!!
The drive failed the first time within about a week! After that (and I'm soooo stupid for trusting in the drive) it kept failing over and over again.
Now I need to review Lemon Laws to see my options!

Do NOT under any circumstances buy this product!!!
