Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP-NS725P stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs through Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive de-interlacer (scanning) with 3:2 pulldown processing. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for a simpler connection to a compatible AV receiver (digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).

Precision Drive 2 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less-than-perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for up to 40 discs.

Other playback options include 10-second instant replay, quick setup, DVD/CD Text, a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes, and multidisc resume (up to 6 discs).

Worked great for 3 years.......2007-02-24

GREAT DVD player for the last 3 years! Up until this morning it worked flawlessly with no complaints. We too just experienced the "Cannot play disc" message like some others have mentioned. It worked fine last night but would not play this morning. We think that for the money spent this DVD player has held up exceptionally well. The tray was able to take the not so gentle use of our 3 year old, putting her DVD's in and taking them back out repeatedly. (We really thought the tray would give out before the player.) Sometimes the player would be left on all day, repeatedly playing the begining of a DVD for hours. For the price this DVD player is going for now, I would say it's a pretty darn good deal!

I bought this player when I bought my WEGA flat screen led tv. It has worked flawlessly every time I have used it. I would recommend it to anyone that was interested in purchasing it as well as other Sony products as well.

Died abruptly.......2006-08-30

I bought this player new about 18 months ago. It worked well up until last week, when it abruptly stopped reading all dvd's you place in it. Normal use, and a dvd player should last longer than that. I would advise against buying this player unless you plan to replace it within 2 years.

Plays great ... for a while........2006-08-23

I've owned and used this Sony DVP-NS725P DVD player for almost 18 months now. I bought it in spite of several negative comments about the general degradation in reliability of Sony products but figured the problems were probably isolated. Dumb conclusion on my part.

The DVP-NS725P worked fine and played great right up until the moment it didn't play at all. We had just finished watching a DVD movie a few days ago, and when we pushed the menu button on the remote the player just locked up. No power surge, no local lightning, no bad disk, and no bad batteries in the remote. We managed to get the DVD out of the player and then unplugged it to try to force a reset, but now when we try to turn it on all it does is display "WEL" (the first three letters of the WELCOME message) before shutting itself off. It doesn't matter which buttons or combinations thereof we use on either the remote or the player.

The fault is apparently is some sort of software glitch in ROM or flash memory, but if you check around for other reviews on this and other Sony models you'll read about enough similar experiences that it must be some sort of systemic problem with Sony players. For those of you that have recently bought one of these and can't understand what the rest of us are complaining about, your time will come.

I previously bought almost nothing but sony brands for all my electronics, but I think that is going to change. The price is usually higher than other brands with similar features, and I thought quality was worth it. I have gone through 2 DVD players in one year (both new out of the box) and was offered a refurbished one for $80. No thanks Sony, I'll try another brand.

This is a good pad for drawing paper for kids or test sketches. It is NOT good for markers though, they bleed through.
