The Toshiba RD-XS35 Multi-Drive DVD Recorder is designed to provide you the greatest flexibility for recording and storing your favorite movies and TV programming. In addition to recording compatibility with DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs, the RD-XS35 provides a spacious 160 GB hard drive, enabling high-speed dubbing from the hard drive to disc without any deterioration of the digital signal. You'll also have instant access to recording programs saved to disc.
The RD-XS35 also features playback compatibility with Video CD and CD-R/CD-RW discs as well as MP3 and WMA digital audio formats. With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control.
The TV Guide On Screen Interactive Program Guide provides an easy to read listing of the television programs available to view or record. The full 2004 version incorporated in the RD-XS35 provides an 8-day program listing, flexibility of recording directly to DVD or the HDD, the ability to perform keyword searches for locating favorite programs, and includes the G-Link IR Blaster for controlling cable boxes. When recording television programs, the name of the show, along with the channel and date, are automatically captured.
The Chase Play feature enables you to begin watching a recording that is already in progress. The Live Chase Play feature lets you "pause" a live recording and then return to it later. During playback of both modes, a bar graph can be displayed on-screen depicting the "progress" or location of the playback signal with regards to the real time recorded signal.
The advanced 3D Y/C digital comb filter (4MB, 10-bit) analyzes sequential fields of information to eliminate dot crawl and color bleed. It also significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. The Black Level Expander increases the black threshold level, so blacks are pure black, not dark gray, improving overall picture contrast.
You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the optical digital audio output.
A Firewire port (also called IEEE1394 or i.Link) is available on the front panel for connecting compatible digital video camcorders. The RD-XS35 provides automatic recognition of the device and on-screen menu controls to easily direct the downloading process with the recorder's remote control. Here's the full range of video and audio connections:

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Avoid Toshiba DVR products.......2007-07-16
I have two of these DVR's from Toshiba. The XS-32 and XS-54. Both units DVD functions no longer work.
The DVR part still works fine on the XS-32. I was able to burn approximately 3 disks on the XS-32 before the writer died. The dvd worked for another 3 years as just a player. Then it died after our fourth call and an update disk from Toshiba. Or first call was under warranty, but it wasn't documented by the customer service tech who recommended that a simple "reset" to the unit by unplugging it would fix it. Our second call was documented but their answer was the same as the first, and reminded us that the unit was no longer under warranty.. The third call mysteriously found an update disk.. which killed the remaining fuctionality of the dvd as a player.. and the fourth call was when our 54 unit died and they basically said tough crap...
The XS-54 unit died after its first attempt to record anything. The XS-54 has a TV GUIDE glitch that it has had since new and Toshiba offered an update disk.. too bad that this unit no longer accepts ANY disk. It just says disk is dirty or damaged. Thanks Toshiba.. and how would you like us to install this update.. So in addition to having the 32 unit which works fine as a DVR, we also have this 54 unit which we can no longer rely on it recording what we ask it to because of a known glitch since new that we can't update because of a bad DVD drive.. GREAT!!!
Unfortunately we didn't try to burn enough DVD's while still under warranty so we could have figured these products were crap while still under the 1 year warranty. I still kick myself for not buying the Philips unit, or sticking with the Panasonic we had initally tried.
Oh, and the kicker... I called the only outlet for Toshiba electronic parts and was quoted almost $600 dollars to just buy the replacement DVD recorder drive inside the unit.. LOL.. I asked if I had contacted a money laundering operation, or an electronic parts supplier.
So basically I'm out over $800 bucks on Toshiba products. Never again.

Personally I love it. Able to record over a weekend unlimited abouts of TV without wondering if the tape will run out.
The only problem so far is at the beginning when I fast forward there was a bar on the bottom of the screen to show me how far in the program I was. That died and when I tried to bring it back up it was frozen in mid path. So I leave it hidden. The counter on the front display still works.
Since the bar died, so did the channel display. I select a channel and it use to display what I typed in. Now I select the channel and wait 20-30sec to see if it changes to what I selected. Yes it's slow to change channels if you type in the numbers. If you use the arrow up or down to change channels. That's normal speed.
After 2009 it's not going to matter anyway. Since it's not digital. Just another spent item that can not change with progress.
Wouldn't buy another one........2007-06-23
I had many difficulties with this product. It has impeccable playback on the DVD and DVR/HDD side. I planned on using it to replace my TIVO and I found that the TV Guide online programming was extremely unreliable and quirky. The most annoying thing was that I couldn't scroll through this listings without the darn thing trying to change the channel. I could not find a setting to correct this. I am someone who rarely uses the instruction book and I found myself consulting the instructions on a weekly basis. This thing is just too darn difficult to use at least compared to TIVO. The clarity of the picture versus my TIVO Series 2 is much better so I guess I would consider that a pro. However it is a pain in the butt for regular TV watching.
Panasonic much better.......2007-05-25
I own a Panasonic DVR which I really like. I wanted a second one for my bedroom, and this one was less expensive. Big Mistake. It does what it says it will, but everything takes two or three more steps. There is a couple second delay for many of the functions. You can't watch a DVD while recording a program. Nothing works smoothly with this unit. I really wish I had bought another Panasonic. Also the fan is loud and on 24/7. It just isn't a good design.
I gave it 3 stars because it does work.

I have enjoyed this product a lot, its made my life much easier. I don't feel like I am a slave to the networks now, and I can skip commercials. I can write to DVD's easily it seems to have advanced editing, but I haven't figured all that out yet. It does take a bit to get use to, if all you have ever had is a VCR, but the manual is well written and its easy to figure out, just takes some practice. It seems to be compatible with most cable or antenna systems and I love the TV guide on it, much easier than the cable TV guide.

I bought the flash cord for my Nikon D100 and now I cannot get it to come off the camera. Another user had to use a hammer to remove it, but I'm too afraid to do that. Anyone have any suggestions?

The bracket is nice and solid. It is a little heavy but is workable. I like it. The cord, however, is defective... It has bad or lose wiring making the flash fire intermittantly both on its own(!)and with shutter release, very annoying. I bought a second cord from a different source and the new one worked fine.

I love the bracket. It is going to be great for weddings. The hot shoe on the TTL flash cord however seems to be cheaply made. It was so tight on my camera that I had to use a hammer to remove it the first time (let me tell you, that was scary!). And now I'm afraid to put it back on my camera.
