I have been dissapointed by TWO portable units so far... a Coby 3.5 inch I bought at Suncoast, the screen is horrible for subtitles and I'm a HUGE anime and japanese music video buff (although the unit played burned DVD's, and MP3's on CDR and DVDR) and a 10 inch Nortech Media that was permanently stuck in 16:9 and wouldn't play MP3's (which is stupid, cuz I only played $99 for the Coby and it does everything the Nortech won't!)
So I am quite happy to finally see a portable that does MP3 discs, and has a relitively decent sized screen that isn't in crappy widescreen format. And for 80 some odd dollars? That's a steal. Now the real test will be if it plays my burned DVD's, considering most standalone home DVD players will play burns (I watched a burned DVD of "Moonchild," the movie with Gackt and Hyde in it, on a friend's older than the hills home DVD unit) it probably will. I'm taking the Nortech back and I'm getting this!
My idea for the perfect portable DVD player:
1) Hasta have a good size screen that can show subtitles and ISN'T permanently stuck in 16:9 widescreen view ratio. (Sorry but this format is for THEATRICAL MOVIES, and i watch burns of TV SHOWS, Knight Rider just doesn't look right when everyone's head is smushed downward. It also helps if that LCD screen has a shield to keep kids from making "trails" on it.
2) Should be able to display ID3 tags and scroll them. On alot of these DVD players they waste alot of screen space that could be used for more. My Rio Volt from 5 years ago does scrolling ID3 tags, and it was $50.
3) Hasta be able to play burned DVD's with .SRT subtitles. And since Nero does a pretty good job of authoring DVD's, that shouldn't be an issue. Divx support would also be cool, but I guess that's asking a bit much.
4) Treble and Bass adjustments! See, what I'd like to see is an all in one travel sized unit that is a hybrid of MP3 player and DVD player. Most HOME dvd units have bass and treble settings, so why isn't this on portables?

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!! COMES WITH A 3 MONTH WARRANTY. IT PLAYS ONLY CERTAIN R1 DVDs. WON'T PLAY ANY BY FOX OR PARAMOUNT, AND ONLY PLAYS A FEW BY TOUCHSTONE. WHEN I COMPLAINED TO COMPANY, THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. BOUGHT AT DISCOVERY CHANNEL STORE.

This dvd player is great. The sound and picture quality is very clear. It is only 5" so it is extremely portable and it can fit anywhere. It comes with a car plug and a battery pack that can be charged. This is very much worth what you pay for it!

I got this as a gift for Christmas. The only problem I have is with the battery life, but most portables under $200 don't go above 2.5 hours. The screen image is pretty good for its size. Bigger screens might be better but they take up a lot more room and this fits comfortably in my bag. The other problem is really the sound, but I plan to solve that with a portable AMP and EQ. Both can be obtained for a little over $20 each. All in all for the price its a pretty good player.

Camera LCD Screen Protector not worth it.......2007-07-30
This screen protector, while it attaches pretty well without adhesives, makes it almost impossible to view the image on the LCD. (I used it on a digital camera on which the LCD screen is the viewfinder.) A small piece of cardboard is included to help you remove air bubbles, but the bubbles remain and you can never seem to eradicate them. I stopped using the screen protector after one day.

A must have for any amatuer astronomer!.......2007-05-14
I picked up this Barlow lens after reading that Barlow lenses were must haves for any telescope kit because they basically double (in theory) the amount of eyepieces you have. For anyone who doesn't know how they work, you simply slide the Barlow lens into your eyepiece slot like a normal eyepiece, and then your normal eyepiece will slide into the Barlow. So in essence, if you have 2 eyepieces, with the Barlow lens you now have 4. The magnification boost that the Shorty gave to my .10mm and .17mm eyepieces was pretty incredible to say the least. I use a Konus 4.5" reflector telescope and with the Barlow boosting my .10mm eyepiece Saturn looked absolutely stunning. You could see the divisions inside the rings, something that was not easily done with the eyepieces alone. Another very convenient thing is that the Shorty can be swapped out just as fast as any normal eyepiece. That being said, I would find the object I was looking for with the wider viewed .17mm eyepiece, then just swap out that one with the .10mm Barlow-loaded eyepiece and the object would be in the center of my FOV within a few seconds. Long story short, if you want some extra magnification power for your eyepieces, look no further. At first I was a bit skeptical that the magnification boost wouldn't be very noticeable, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how well it really worked. For the price, you can't beat it.

I got one of these for my StarBlast 4.5EQ and I was amazed--the Cassini division and cloud bands on Saturn were opened to my view. Highly recommended for getting that last bit of "oomph" from a small telescope.
