For its video stage, the DVD-555S employs dual, discrete 54 MHz, 10-bit video digital-to-analog conversion (1 chip each for progressive and interlaced outputs). Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts (appreciable on high-definition and HD-ready TVs).
A 2 MB memory buffer decreases layer-change pauses or pickup dropouts during DVD playback, and standard composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with just about any television.
The player uses Burr-Brown 24-bit, 192 kHz audio DACs (PCM-1756) for pristine sound from DVDs and CDs, and both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection with your audio/video receiver. The digital-audio outputs are configurable for 24-bit, 96 kHz PCM passthrough to compatible receivers and stand-alone DACs.
Other features include picture zoom, black-level control, and remote ports for hookup and operation in concert with other Denon equipment.

I bought this DVD player at Ultimate Electronics for fairly cheap. Considering that this is a Denon we are talking about, you get a lot for the price.
I bought this unit for it's DVD-R reading capabilities, and for the most part, it has surpassed my already high expectations. DVD-R playback is for the most part well done, as is the MP3 playback with it's easy to use interface.
The unit looks nice too, silver face with the neat green light around the on/off button is a nice touch. The fit and finish is to be expected with such a low-end product (Well, the lowest in Denon's line anyway). The disc tray does not line up well with the face, but as I said before, for the price, you really get a lot, but it's still Denon's low end.
I would reccomend this item to anyone who's looking for a cheap player that does most, who also want to name drop a reveered brand.

This is a good machine.Unfortunatly,it is over priced,and noisy..I purchased the unit two weeks ago for 10 bucks off the regular price...The sound was not as clean as i expected...The machine locked up in freeze frame.Unplugging machine,cleared the problem...While i most likely received a defective unit...I exchanged the player for a pioneer dvd player...There are better players out their,for less,that are more reliable...If you purchase the denon..."please make sure the retailer has a good defective/exchange-refund policy."

Firstly, I am an audiophile, and my purchase was mainly for CD's. Since no one makes single CD players anymore aside from the really high end, I thought I go for a DVD player instead. CD's don't sound as good as analog records, as all audiophiles know. But I am not willing to spend thousands on an audiophile CD player, which still does not compare to the best turntables or even my not so expensive turntable. So I figure Denon may be a step above the typical Japanese brands. Well, I compared this unit to a Sony DVD that I purchased about 4 years ago. The sound of the Denon is more polite and detailed than the Sony, but the Sony is more lively. If I have to live with one, I probably go with the Denon. However, the difference is certainly NOT worth the price premium that Denon demands, especially on this model. In fact, what I disliked most about the Denon is the build; this model is cheap and flimsy, even worse than the no-name brands. For less money, one can get the latest Sony with SACD playback, a feature that the Denon lacks. Also, even the cheap Sony's look and feel more substantial than this Denon. Oh yes, the Denon transport is also noisy. My old Sony DVD was quiet; Denon made a click click click noise. So I think I will try out the latest Sonys and even the Onkyos, which are much nicer built than the cheap Denons.

It was delivered on time and brand "new". Its very easy to take the backup etc.. I would have rated it 5 is the size of harddisk was smaller

I'd bought my original drive almost a year ago. The first one died in early June and I contacted Seagate, sent it back at my own expense and then I received a refurbished drive that won't write more than 3GB worth of data before it freezes up and causes my system to crash. I call Seagate and the less than helpful tech in India offers me the same deal as before. Why would I want another P.O.S. refurbished drive at $20+ in s&h? Poor product and equally shabby customer service, I'll be buying my products from one of this company's competitors from now on.

I've been using the drive for about 1 year and I accidentally hit the power switch. After that, the drive doesn't work anymore. It just makes a beeping sound and Windows XP can't find the hardware. This is not a robust drive.
Usable, but not user friendly.......2007-09-13
I bought this drive to use when I travel for my job. It's compact, but I didn't realize that it required a special USB Y-cable. This is inconvenient, because I only have 2 USB slots on my laptop, one of which is used for a mouse. I purchased a powered USB hub to see if it could run from that, but the drive mounts inconsistently and occasionally shows a flashing blue light with an annoying clicking sound indicating that it isn't getting enough power. The manual says that you can purchase a separate power supply, but fails to give the specifications regarding pin size and polarity. So, in order to use this drive successfully for traveling I will still need a separate power supply (and possibly even a USB hub). It's usuable, but not user friendly.

I had a similar experience to R. Ail. My ST9100801U2-RK died quite unexpectedly after just over a year of use, and Seagate's customer service was much less than helpful; their rep actually got wise with me when I asked why I should buy another Seagate; "You never know, you might get lucky this time" I was told. Fortunately a repair guy I know was able to save the data, and repair the disc, although of course the case is shot. I need another portable drive, but it won't be a Seagate!
