nice but lacking .......2007-01-30
My older discontinued Pioneer 588A which I love has more features then this such as optic audio out and sacd this unit sadly lacks
but is nice unit for those who do not require this
but sadly I do and would of be buying the DV-696 promised last January 2006 at the Las Vegas show but never delved to the US market(only released in Europe)
Incompatiblity Issue: Read before buying.......2006-10-25
I replaced a 13 month old Toshiba SD-V593 DVD/VCR combo unit with this Pioneer DVD. Toshiba player broke after the time mentioned and is already in the junk yard. See my review on that thing, please, before buying one.
But on to the Pioneer: This Pioneer unit, after set up, which was easy enough, gave me a surprise, an unfortunate one! Mated through the HDMI cable to my Sony KD 34XS955 HDTV (34" screen, 16:9 ratio), any DVD played was severly cropped. Wide screen DVD's had bars both above and below the picture. Full screen picture was cropped at the sides -- the full screen image from the Toshiba was FULL SCREEN. I know all the stretchings and so forth tricks but couldn't get a full screen picture, so I phoned Pioneer for information from "technical support."
Well, a pleasant person, after grasping what I was saying, that I wanted to have a true "full screen" image sans zoomings, stretchings or whatever, excused themselves to "read through the manual for a minute." Ok, fine... but I myself had, by the time I was forced to call Pioneer support, virtually memorized the manual and had manipulated both the DVD player and the TV manifold times, to no satisfactory end.
After support person came back on the phone, I was told I would "probably" have to add some cable connecton, like, for example, component cables, then try it again. Hogwash. I bought the DVD player with the HDMI so there wouldn't be screwing around with cables. I sure don't know what the issue is, but if you've a wide screen TV, don't buy this unit.
I've no quarrel with clarity of picture, sound or set up -- though it did take many button pushings on the remote to get the settings to change during set up procedure; really reluctant to make commanded changes, for some reason? As concerning image clarity, I cannot really say what it might have looked like IF it had filled my TV's screen, as it should have on full screen mode.
Bottom line: This unit of slight use to me, except as a gap-filler before the Sony DVD player I've had to order gets here. How many times do we consumers have to buy electronic gadgets to get one that will work as it should and not self-destruct either right away or after just a year or so?
Excellent performance at a great price.......2006-09-26
This is an excellent DVD player for matching with a HD TV. I am using it with a Samsung LNS2651D 26" LCD HDTV in my bedroom and I am impressed with the result. I have it coupled with HDMI. This gives the best visual performance by far and is probably required for 1080i upscaling.
The player also handles DivX in Home theatre profile (i.e. no support for DivX HD profile,as tested on the material I had) and gives good results. It is supposed to handle MP3 and WMA formats, but I have bought this primarily for video entertainment and have not tested those features.
Startup and loading DVD is a bit slow - takes about 10-15 seconds.
Overall a great purchase for the price from Amazon.

Not Dependable.......2007-08-23
I bought this about two years ago for critical files. I had a 256 MB Kingston Data Traveler but wanted something with more memory. I opted for this as the price was good and it had reasonably good reviews.
Well, after having it one year it started going bad. In addition, it doesn't work in some USB ports on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, I bought a 4 GIG Transcend, which is still working but it's not dependable. I've only had it about a year. On the other hand, the old Kingston is as solid and dependable as it ever was. And I've owned it about four years.
Bottom line: If you want to store mission critical files, don't buy this. Invest more money and get a Kingston Traveler. I have another flash drive but haven't owned it long enough to recommend it yet. I can, however, recommend the Kingston.
But stay away from Transcend unless you just want something cheap for files you can afford to lose and if you want a throw-away.

I love this product. I always had the problem of loosing the cap on my flash drives, but this I don't have to worry about it. The slide lock protects the usb port when using the flash drive. I recomend this product for anybody that is looking for a fast and easy to use flash drive.
Built cheap........2007-04-11
This drive works fine as far as flash memory goes. And it beats losing the cap because there is none. I have three SanDisk Titanium drives. Two which are now broken and cannot be used. SanDisk has replaced two of the drives a total of three times. Now they say I'm breaking them and won't replace them. The fact is, I am not breaking them. They just don't hold up. I travel from jobsite office to jobsite office. I plug the drive into a computer about 20 times a week. They hold up for about three months then they either physically break at the male part of the drive or the slide mechanism wears out and the slide won't lock in the out position. SO I gave up on SanDisk and am now trying the Transend drive. I have had it a few weeks and it is already looking like it's not going to hold up. The materials and assembly appear and feel cheap, so I would be surprised if it lasts more than a month or two. I back up the data about three times a week just in case. If you are an occasional user or just leave the drive plugged into the machine most of time it's worth the buy. But if you use it how it's meant to be...as a travel drive...then find a more durable drive.
Inexpensive with a good transfer rate........2007-01-08
I considered a number of USB flash drives before selecting the Transcend JetFlash 1GB USB Flash Drive - TS1GJF110. I selected it based on transfer speed and low cost. I have had no troubles with the drive. It has a pretty blue LED. I am completely satisfied with this purchase.

Fine product, gets the job done. I just don't like how the port slides in and out of the case and doesn't have a cover to protect it. Something could accidentally get spilled down in there or in my case, my 2 year old figured out how it works and when she gets a hold of it she makes it go in and out. Easily damaged in the hands of the wrong person.
