Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP-NS425P stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs through its progressive-scan output and 3:2 pulldown processing. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for a simpler connection to a compatible AV receiver (but be aware that digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).
Precision Drive 2 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less-than-perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. Past generations of Precision Drive technology were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible. This newer system simplifies the process by moving just the lens (instead of the entire optical block) for faster and more accurate error correction.
As soon as you hook up the DVD player, a special Quick Setup screen appears ready to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for up to six discs.
Other playback features include 10-second instant replay, DVD/CD Text display (with applicable discs), a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, as well as Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes.

Mine broke like all of the others.......2007-03-01
When this player was working I really enjoyed it and was happy with it (reason for 2 stars instead of 1,) however, this machine after very little use decided one day to stop working for no reason and is now gathering dust in the basement. I've had other DVD players (cheap models) that have worked for years with no issues..I EXPECT MUCH MORE FROM SONY... Read the other reviews..just like mine, this machine breaks after a short time of use.

As any DVD player you have to read the instructions and to know the TV that would bring out the full potential of the DVD player. In my case, I have to enquired a lot from various dealers and even the Sony Support Center to make sure I don't miss anything, viz. the Sony TV did not exhibit the 16.9 wide screen format. The support was so kind, she enlighted me to turn this feature on by using the TV remote (this was not mewntion in the Sony TV Guide Book). Once the TV gone to another format, I had to turn this feature on once more.
Another good at first, then............2006-05-08
The reason why I'm giving this product 2 stars, instead of my gut feeling of 1 star is I'm writing this review the day after this dvd player froze again for the 100th time! I bought this Christmas of 2004. By Christmas of 2005, the problems began, stopping, and or freezing of movies. Cleaning the player with lense cleaner will not do the trick, however a direct hit with the fist will work sometimes!
All serious aside, here is the bad:
DVD will freeze up for no reason. It will work of and on, but now after experiencing this problem for the past 5 months, it is getting frustrating. To the point where I will not use the machine. This does not make sense to me because I have a CD player of 10 years old, technology wise, it is the same concept and I have never had problems with my CD, or computer with it;s DVD player at all.
I would not advise anyone to buy this machine, in the long run you could have this same problem. For the price I'm sure there are other DVD players that will last longer with the same features.

Lot's of features for the price, picture quality is great for the average viewer, and the remote control is also great.

I'm dissapointed with another Sony product, I'm a little gun shy in buying another DVD player from them. I would pass on this product if you are reading these reviews, then look for another manufacturer. I'm now going to do the same.
Good (at first).......2006-02-18
This DVD player lasted just over a year before it died. The first sign of trouble started a few months ago when the door would stick. All it took was a slight tug with a fingernail to open it, and eventually the problem stopped. Two nights ago I was watching a movie when it suddenly stopped playing. I could turn the player off and on, but when I pushed play all I heard was a grinding noise (a louder variation then the player has made since I got it). I turned it off and let it sit for a day just for giggles, but that didn't help. Before this, the player was fine. It took longer to load movies than most, but not by more than a few seconds. Definitely not the quality and durability I expected from Sony.
Don't buy this - Breaks down after only a few months of light usage.......2005-07-29
my player of this model broke down after a few months of light usage - only used it to watch 5 or 6 dvds a month. i did all the checking and cleaning that sony tech support asked me to do. finally they told me that i just had to replace the player
as the warranty is only for 90 days (!!), sony won't repair
out of warranty model, but offers to replace your broken model with a refurbished player of the same model...
how nice, except sony will charge you $63+tax for replacing their faulty machine!!!
Sony is taking advantage of its customers by selling bad merchandise and making $$$ off their customer "support" program
I will not be buying any sony products ever again.

Great external drive. Does what it is supposed to. I've even dropped it a few times and it still works great. (data wasnt lost either). Sometimes the on button is weird, you have to push it just right but this is rarely. For the price, this is the best, biggest drive you can buy.

The My Book Essential is very easy to use. You just plug it in and off you go. That said, I did have problems with getting one of my older PCs (upgraded to XP Home)to recognize the drive. Western Digital tech support was pretty much useless regarding the issue. However, I found that inserting a flash drive at the same time resulted the My Book
finally being recognized. It is quiet too.

Pro: Relativly quite. File corruption is usually concern with externals (especially DIY external enclosures) but not this one. Auto on/off feature keeps unit in sync with pc.
Con: I like the 5 year warrenty of the Seagates; I wish more drive mfgs would follow suite. Only concern regarding 400GB is the price. As of 12/2006 you can get the 500GB for the same price as the 400GB. I got mine at St@ples for $99 Thanksgiving day sale.
