The SLV-D560P handles just about any conceivable media format, from VHS and S-VHS tapes (which it renders at standard VHS resolution) to DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW--including CPRM-protected programming (Content Protection for Recordable Media). It will even spin your homemade MP3 CDs and JPEG picture CDs (including Kodak Picture CD).
Whether you already own an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SLV-D560P can deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Other DVD features include instant replay, picture zoom, and parental lock.
The VCR section offers 1-month, 8-event advance programming and commercial skip. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the front panel for hassle-free connections. Its 4-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. State-of-the-art, 19-micron video heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.
VCR Plus+ simplifies advance programming, commercial skip makes it easy to zip past commercials and unwanted "coming attractions," and a built-in Quickset timer dial lets you program the VCR with just a quick turn of the wrist (press the Quickset dial, then turn the knob to set the date, start time, stop time, and channel).
Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for some TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use 2 inputs, however, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats.
It's a different deal for audio: you can listen through a single set of stereo analog-audio cables for each component (one is supplied), or--if you want to enjoy DVDs in discrete 5.1-channel surround sound--you can send the DVD's audio to a compatible audio/video receiver and a multichannel speaker system through a digital-audio interconnect (either optical or coaxial, not supplied). The unit also comes with an RF cable that will transmit VHS/DVD audio and video to your TV, a multi-lingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), and an illuminated DVD/VCR remote control that also operates most brands of TV.

I've had this unit for over a year, and I'm very pleased with it. My only complaint is that when I kept it on once for a few days straight, using its tuner instead of my TV tuner, it stopped working altogether. It was okay when I turned it on the next day. I've found that if I keep it on only when I'm actively watching a DVD or a VHS, then turn it off afterwards, everything's fine with it.

I was expecting a quality Sony product when I bought this. I have another sony DVD player that I have been using for about 3 years without any problems. This unit is another story.
After 4 months of use, the player stopped working with DVD/RW disks. A few days later, manufactured disks stopped working, now a few days later, no DVDs will play on the unit.
I am so glad I got an extended warranty, because I am going to go and pick up my third new unit today for another 4 months of usage before the inevitable failure.

I have 2 of these and am thinking about a third, but I really want to get a DVD recorder/VCR unit that has the one feature of this that I really love. And that is the "Dail Timer" on the front of the machine. We aren't really into technology so I don't really know if the video/dvd quality is any good, and I rarely use the DVD player, although I don't recall having any problems when I did, but I record ALOT of shows and the dial timer lets me set the unit to record without ever having to turn the TV and recorder on. It's really neat and I use it tons. The SONY DVD/VCR recorder unit doesn't have this feature which is why I may get another one of these. I put a splitter where my cable connection comes into a room and don't even have these units hooked up to a TV...although I do have to hook it up to a TV if I goof up the programming and need to use the screen to delete or change the recording info. The remote is pretty lousy but then I never really use that either...just the dial timer...and that works great.

Not a lot to say, I bought it, bought a BYTECC enclosure for it(the USB / 1394 combo), formatted it and it works great plugged into my XP and WIN2000 computers. I get the standard FireWire "delayed write failure" on both computers, but I also get it on another drive with a completely different enclosure and chipset(it has nothing to do with the disk drive). I get full USB 2.0 speed transfer rates both ways and I get full 1394 transfer rate on read. These are a function of the enclosure and interface, but the drive keeps right up with it.
I have purchased three Seagate disk drives (two 2.5" laptop form factor, and this 3.5") in the past two years and I have been happy with all of them. It is worth a little extra money in my opinion for the quality so I just plain "don't have to worry about it".

I used this in an external enclosure and it's typical Seagate. It does the job well and when I bought it, the price was also good.
I work with Apples a lot and unlike some others, I've never had a problem with Seagate in the Apples. Note that's more common with SATA drives than ATA.

I purchased this with the hopes that I could use it with USBExtreme to rip all my PS2 games to a HD to help 'clean up' my "man's room" so that they're not 60 PS2 game boxes out in the open. It first didn't work after spending many many hours ripping all the PS2 games to the HD. I took a week off and re-read the instructions and realized I needed to format it twice (once using the mgmnt tools in XP, the second time w/a file from USBExtreme). After I did this it WORKED! Mind you, since it didn't work the first time that doesn't mean anything was wrong with the drive - it was 'user error'. So as far as using it IN a computer for backing-up data etc - I have no comment - but for ripping PS2 games on a drive this size using USBExtreme - it works.

I bought thru amazon this Seagate ST3500641A-RK 500Gb drive, but less than a week after I installed it in my winXp pro system, it crashed the system during a simple drive to drive copy procedure. Concerned, I ran a disk utility program, HDDlifePro-2.9.105, and the health and performance were rated at 47%. Speedfan, another HD health check program, confirmed these readings via an online evaluation. While the drive is still reported as healthy, it is not yet a month old, and I have many other disks several years old at 90% or over health and performance ratings. Health later rose to 51% but how can a BRAND NEW DRIVE fall to HALF its health nearly out of the box?
I contacted Seagate support, and a reply took weeks, asking me to run again their mediocre utitility scan, which merely reports it as healthy without percentile numbers, and they labeled the issue as SOLVED. Great for them.
I had copied 350gb of data to this disk, so I am loath to return it, specially since they may say that 51% is still healthy and I should accept it at that. But really, this is the second Seagate drive that has given me problems, while drives for Western Digital and other brands always performed fine. So Seagate may have the hype but not the delivery. I will never buy from the again.
