The only reason I quit using mine was I had to purchase a combo when my VHS machine went bad. This unit worked perfectly for me -- never had a problem.

Ive owned this dvd player for 2 years at least and never had a big problem yet. In this age of electronics that dont last at all-im pretty sure i got a good one here. The player has always started up and played just like its suppoed to, the remote works great (LOTS of buttons that i am not technical enough to care about) and the picture is very crisp and clear. i like that you can turn the player all the way off in the middle of a movie and when you turn it back on, it starts the movie back where you left off. I think the most important thing to say is, it is quite reliable.
The only cons i can say are that you cannot always operate the player without the remote. there is no "enter" button on the player, and the dvds wont start from the main menu until you get out the remote and hit enter.(there are all the other buttons on the player except this one) I dont know about everyone else, but im always losing remotes, and this is a pain to not be ablr to start it on the player.
2) the player is wide across like 18" and not deep-about 12" so its either too wide to fit in a cabinet, or too short to sit any other devices on top of it. so it has to sit on top of everything, or by iteself. I guess it didnt stop me from buying it, and it works great which is the main thing, so ive been happy with it for the price. no need to spend more money on a better name brand, when this one works just as well!

I've had this DVD player for several months now and have had no problems with it. The picture and sound quality are great and the hook up is very easy. I use this player for my bedroom and do not have a home theatre system in there, but this player works fine. My only beef is that it does not play special features for certain dvds, like Memento. Otherwise, a great buy
Don't buy this DVD player.......2003-05-13
I had this player for 2 months and it is already giving me problems. The picture quality is terrible. Green lines appear across the screen when a movie is playing. The player was great for the first 2 months. Good luck if you decide to take a chance with this player.

Recent problem.......2006-06-10
Just this week, I bought a new DVD (Mallrats 10th Anniversary Edition, which is not really relevant to the review at hand.) and played it on this DVD player. It's a double-sided DVD, and even though there is no scratches or scuffs or any notable errors on either side of the disc, it would oddly pause at a certain part near the end of the movie and then not play properly (stopping and starting). Sometimes, it would make the movie pretty much freeze with no chance of watching the rest.
This happened on both sides of the disc (once per different version of the movie). I then played it on my brother's JVC DVD player, and there was no hitch. However, I ordered another copy of the movie, and if this copy screws up, then I'm convinced it's the DVD player. Because what are the chances of two NEW copies of the same movie both screwing up? It hasn't been like this DVD player to screw up on me, not until now.
I gave it two stars instead of one because this is the first problem I've ever had with it, and I've had it for 3-4 years. But this shouldn't be happening to discs with no flaws on them.

I really don't know what is going on with some of these negative reviews. I bought this DVD player almost two years ago and it has served me very well with no real problems. I needed a DVD player that could play multiple formats, particularly VCDs, and wasn't too expensive. I decided on this model and I am more than happy with my purchase. The Enhanced Picture and Audio modes are useful and it doesn't take up a lot of space on the TV stand. My gripes are few and minor. The remote could have been better designed with more distinctions between buttons. This would help enormously in low light. The fast forward speed on VCDs could be faster, but that's not too big of a problem. Finally, I've noticed significant picture breakup on burned DVDs, but this only happens towards the end of the movie for some reason. This may be the fault of the disc, but then I tried it on my PS2 and didn't experience the picture problems. Despite these minor glitches, Toshiba really produced a winner with this player. Anyone looking for a value-priced and feature-rich DVD player should consider this model.
I can not recommend this player at all.......2004-07-07
I bought this Toshiba SD-1800 about 6 months ago. It seemed to work fine...on DVDs only, we don't play CDs or other discs on it...About a month ago it started having the following symptoms: A DVD will play for a little bit starting out. Then the picture will get "shadowy", almost like a negative photo. Picture will then start and stop, and then finally stop alltogether. Happens on all DVDs. It seems to me this is some sort of temperature sensitve problem. Once the player warms up it starts having these problems. Based on this and after reading other reviews I would NOT RECOMMEND purchasing this player at all. And it brings into question the Toshiba name in terms of reliability and quality. Toshiba is not high on my list right now.
Great for New Grad on a Budget.......2003-12-10
This is my first DVD player and I have no complaints so far. Plays DVDs well and responds well to the remote control. It has been nine months already and I wonder what all the poor reviews are about. I have had no problems and I am glad I spent so little and got so much out of it. Now I need to test VCDs and then I'll be perfectly satisified with my purchase.
reliability problems, misleading warranty.......2003-07-12
I got this player for a second TV and picked what I thought was a good brand so I wouldn't have any problems with it. After the first few times I used it, it started having trouble synchronizing the video signal. It behaved like the disk was damaged, even though the player was practically new and the same disk then played fine on another player. Toshiba claims there's a 1 year warranty, but after 90 days you're practically SOL, you have to pay shipping and a "handling fee" that together make replacing the player a more attractive choice. The replacement won't be a Toshiba...
