Toshiba's surprisingly affordable SD-5970 single-disc DVD player is a must for videophiles: the player upconverts DVD-Video content to high-definition resolution (either 720p or 1080i). Further, the sleek component offers a cutting-edge High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) so you can make a direct digital connection between the SD-5970 and a compatible HDTV or HD-ready TV/monitor. The player spins DVD-Video movies, of course, and also handles recordable CDs loaded with MP3 or WMA music files and discs filled with JPEG digital photos, letting you make the most of your digital media.
The SD-5970 is outfitted with 10-bit/54 MHz video DACs (digital-to-analog converters) and ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs for seamless, flicker-free images when viewed through high-definition and HD-ready TVs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p/720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using a minimum of twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. For compatibility with traditional SD (standard-definition) televisions, the SD-5970 sports composite- and S-video outputs.
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface supporting standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multichannel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.
The SD-5970 also performs 3:2 pulldown reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion. Conventional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Digital picture zoom is an interactive DVD feature that lets you select and magnify an area of a picture you want to zoom in on. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces high color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. You can also use this feature to expand letterbox-only films to full-screen (4:3 aspect ratio) dimension.
For audio, choose from 2-channel analog audio outs or either of 2 forms of digital-audio output, optical or coaxial, for transmitting discrete, multichannel surround signals--either Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1--to a compatible AV receiver/surround processor and speaker system. Listening in surround sound puts you right in the middle of the action, whether you're playing an action movie, a concert video, or a period drama. Not set up for surround yet? A special 3-D Surround circuit simulates surround sound from any 2 speakers.

The worst peice of equipment ever created........2007-11-26
I have owned this piece since it came out in 2005. I bought it with the Toshiba 52HM84 HD Television. I have owned Toshiba products for 20 years and have never been so disappointed in a products performance and the company's support of it. The player freezes almost every time you insert a disc. The remote and manual buttons on the front of the unit are of no use. The entire unit decides when it is going to unfreeze. You cannot even turn it off and back on. Toshiba offers no firmware upgrade or useful information to help the problem. They can only tell you to unplug it, take the batteries out of the remote and press every button. This all does nothing to remedy the problem. It sure would be nice if Toshiba would fix the problem. When it does work, it has a great picture.

Estate sale find.......2006-11-17
Oh boy, though I did pretty good. Found this at an estate sale for $27.50. Looks brand new! The first dvd I played would lock up at times. I've been a VHS guy & they don't lock up or pictures don't freeze either. Hello new tech. After reading many of these reviews I'm thinking I got ripped off paying $27.50. How could someone be so unlucky. I mean Toshiba is a BIG name in electronics! Sounds like it might be the biggest POS ever.

It worked okay for about a year, now the LCD won't come on, so I have no idea where I am in the movie. I agree with these reviews entirely. Not a good buy.
Just Like The Rest.......2006-08-24
I have had two of these units (one for bedroom/one for living room) for more than a year and I am fortunate that both are still working and do not have issues with any disc thrown at them like others here. The picture quality is excellent as has been noted by others. However...I cannot stand using these any longer. From day one the response times of the remote and on unit controls has been horrible! It takes me longer to get the darn things to open than for my family to decide which DVD we are going to watch (meaning: a long time!). It has gotten so bad I've decided to move a Samsung HD841 (was being used only for DVD-A/SACD) to the bedroom and build an HTPC for the living room. Toshiba used to make great players...and maybe they still do, but this thing is the single worst piece of Home Audio/Video equipment I've ever purchased (and that includes the first generation Fisher CD player I bought in the early 80's that died in a week). My fiance asked if I was going to sell them...I just laughed and told her that nobody in their right mind would buy these so I am going to simply throw them away...or maybe tear them down and see if there is anything I can salvage for my electronics projects. One star is for the actual picture quality and the other star is for the included HDMI cable that I am keeping.

Great fast CD burner that plays DVDs.......2006-11-11
I bough this drive to replace the aging DVD drive in my current system. Unfortunately, the days of picking up a cheep plain DVD drive are gone, and they have been replace with models that are CD-r drives that play DVDs as well. The burner works well, and come with Nero burning software and Power DVD 6 player, which works well. I already had a DVD burner, but for about 20 more you can likely get a DVD burner. Good price for what i wanted, available on amazon competatively, but also available at many big retail chain stores.

Hoodman H-30D very limited for fast shooting........2007-08-28
I am a wedding photographer using a Canon 30D. I bought this to be able to see the LCD more clearly in bright sunlight. The hood is well-made and fit perfectly. However, the reduction in LCD washout was fairly minimal, and far worse, it was next to impossible to take a shot using the viewfinder with the hood open. You have to fold it down, which takes too much time if you need to shoot quickly (like at a wedding). If speed is unimportant, the Hoodman has some limited utility. I do think that when the 40D comes out, the Hoodman would be a nice Gizmo to have using "live view" on the LCD.
