Full-Featured DVD Player
The SD-V594 includes an integrated DVD player compatible with several disc formats: DVD Video, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD and DVD-R. Want to bring your photos out of the office and into the TV room? Simply burn your JPEG photos to a disc and the SD-V594 will provide you access to a slide show of your images with a few clicks on the player's remote control. Alternatively, you could connect a USB mass storage device to view your images. Many digital cameras will support this type of connection.
HDMI Compatible
High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format or compressed. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.
An added benefit of connecting the D-R5 to your television with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture. Also, the unit's built-in MPEG decoder is able to display your JPEG files at higher resolution when connected to an HDMI display.
Lacking an HDMI connection, however, the D-R5 offers 14-bit digital-to-analog video conversion at 108 MHz and component video output. This player is also DivX Home Theater Certified, which means it display popular Internet video formats, such as DivX, AVI, and MPEG4.
Hi-Fi VHS VCR
The unit's built-in VCR has four 19-micron heads for superior playback at all speeds--SP, SLP, and EP. The SD-V594 is also equiped with S-VHS quasi-playback, which means it can play, but not record, S-VHS tapes. It features stereo recording and playback, as well as MTS and SAP audio functions. Most users will appreciate the 30-second skip button, which is designed to advanced the tape precisely 30 seconds, allowing you to bypass the commercials recorded with your favorite programming.
Audio
For home theater audio hookups, the unit provides Dolby Digital and dts surround sound output through optical and coaxial ports. For analog sound systems, the SD-V594 uses 24-bit conversion at 192kHz. The D-R5 also plays MP3 and WMA files stored on a compatible disc media or USB mass storage devices.

just stopped working.......2007-09-20
It never worked perfectly. Would sometimes pause in the midst of playing a DVD. Thought maybe it had to do with the age of the dvd... but made no difference. Now... it seems dead. Won't turn on. Need to buy another unit now and will probably separate the DVD from the VHS. Am starting to question Toshiba brand. Used to be reliable which is why I bought this unit. But my last Laptop purchase from them also turned out to be a VERY EXPENSIVE and now famous lemon... Will not buy Toshiba again.

I purchased this DVD/VCR player to replace one that had broken. We didn't need a really fancy one as it was just for our bedroom. I always hate replacing things with new ones because it takes forever to figure out how to use them. Not so with this machine, it is really easy to use and has lots of extra features. It is a great product for the price. I would definitely recommend this model for anyone who is scared off by confusing controls & hard to understand directions. Everything is very straightforward, piece of cake.
Super Duper DVD/ VCR .......2007-03-20
I have a nice system with large plasme and surround sound and with the HDMI outlet going straight into back of tv - the picture is flawless and the sound is great. I could tell it was a quality unit when I ordered it and then when it arrived a few days later and I saw first hand that was quality!!!! Still learning how to work the remote and all that it will do, but would recommend it to anyone.

Disposable Unit consistent with price?.......2007-03-08
I bought the product based on two great features for me: USB port & HDMI conexion capabilities. The USB feature works fine once you find out that there is a short lapse-time to activate it between the moment you turn on the device and the DVD is loaded. Once it starts reading the Disc, there is no way to switch to USB mode.
But the most dissaponting fact with my experience, is that after 1 month of use, the image quality started deteriorating considerably, to a point that it looks I'm watching from a Betamax casette-video! I haven't even taken the time to go through the hassle of reconecting cables, or switchin from HDMI to S-Video or Digital, cause I dont think its worth it. Bottomline, the quality of the video decreases to a very unacceptable level. Just a note, my TV is a brand new HDTV 50" Plasma and the HD channels are showing some incredibly awesome quality images.
Since I dont have time to box it and return it, or even to find someone to give it away to, I am just trashing it.

Died on me after 2 years, 5 months.......2007-12-25
So this was my 2nd drive that i used for downloads and storing and playing video. After about 2 years 5 months, it died. Before it did, there was no death rattle, but occasionally it would disappear from my connected drives list. I thought it was a connection problem, so I kept opening the case to reconnect, but it still would disconnect unless something was actively accessing the drive.
Finally after trying to upgrade windows, the data got corrupted and I lost everything. (This wasn't even the drive I was installing windows on!) I came to terms with losing my data and formatted the drive; however, it would not pass the Western Digital diagnostics test getting a "too many bad sectors" error.
Well, I'm out of luck. This piece of trash only comes with a 1 year warrenty. The only way to get the 3 year advertised on WD's web site is to buy it at an inflated price from them! That's the end of my business with this company. Gooddbye, WD!. Will buy a seagate, hitachi or samsung.
Dead drive.......2007-05-11
Purchased due to cheap price and figured I could easily get my money out of it. Died within a couple of months light use. Won't even spin up. I prey WD tech support isn't as bad as comments make it out to be, but I am braced for the fact that my hard earned dollars are likely down the drain.

Lack of Support for Failed Drives
Western Digital will not support your hard drive WHEN it fails. On November 16, 2004, I bought a 250GB hard drive. Three months later in February, 2005, I had to return it for a replacement due to a hard failure. Now, this replacement drive too has failed as well after only eight months.
I went through two Western Digital drives in a year due to no fault of my own and the hard drive failed just six days after the warranty expiration. I requested a replacement from Western Digital and they completely ignored me.

I bought one of these and it died within one reboot. It was reporting intermittent read/write errors. So I got another identical drive and within a week was completely dead this time. Must have been a bad batch from the manufacturer. Western Digital are usually great.
