24p True Cinema Video Output

Sony BDP-S300 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
It's a great player. I got Spiderman free along with the player. Played it after updating the firmware provided free from the Sony website (they mailed in 3 days). The picture was very clear, the startup was slow initially but not that slow (perhaps it was an update).
The sound quality using a HDMI cable is great, clear.

The BDP S300 is unstable???.......2007-12-17
I purchased the BDP S300 back in July and with the firmware upgrades (currently up to version 3.3 ) provided by Sony the player has successfully played all the Blu-ray disk that I have acquired without any problems. I have never had an event when I placed a Blu-ray disk in the player and it did not play. I have over 60 Blu-ray disks and all have played without a problem. The video on my 60" LCoS Sony HD is excellent. The only issue I have with some of the Blu-ray disks is when they are produced by a neutral HD producers they are generated for the lower bit-rate of the HDDVD disk whereas if produced exclusively for for the Blu-ray disk action or highly detailed scenes can be done at a higher bit rate. Yes startup is a bit slow sometimes but that is usually between 1 and 1.5 minutes. The only issue I have with the player is that Sony did not provide the audio bitstream over the HDMI port for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD so my Onkyo TX-SR705 can process these new audio CODECs. The audio however is still very good. I also have not had any problems playing the standard DVD that I have in my collection, they all where upgraded to 1080 without any problem and look very good on the 60" Sony HD.
Sony / Blu-ray are living off the potential of their products.......2007-12-17
I have owned this player since early November 2007 and even though this is a "second generation player" from Sony, everything about suggests an early release model. Sony has confirmed that this is still a profile version 1.0 player and is not able to be upgraded to profile 1.1 or 2.0. I purchased this player to add to my Toshiba HD-DVD player, as I was committed to support both formats. Since I was only renting movies that were exclusive to Blu-ray, my opinions of both this player and the Blu-ray technology are limited to this fact. "Ratatouille" was the first Blu-ray movie I tried to play and the experience of this title left me wondering if the player was faulty. "Curse of the Black Pearl" was next and the same problems of very, very slow load times and the response of the remote caused me to keep hitting the same buttons. Disney has also turned off the resume function of the player so if you hit the stop button, you are starting all over again. Since when does the movie studio decided what features of my Blu-ray player I can use! Since I do have something to compare this with, let me just say that the Toshiba HD-35A player is miles ahead of this player and even though they have space limitations on their HD-DVD format, are leading this "War" right now, IMHO. After all, that is what matters. Blu-ray is still living and selling off of potential. If I could do this over again, I would purchase the PS3, as it will be a version 1.1 & 2.0 complaint if Sony upgrades the firmware as they have promised. Since the price keeps dropping, it is looking more desirable and is getting closer to a fair price given its limitations. I still would not buy it. Wait for at least a version 1.1 player.
This technology is not simply not "there" yet........2007-12-12
The picture this blu-ray player produces, especially when playing a very good blu-ray disk like "Live Free or Die Hard" or "spiderman 3" is spectacular. Unfortunately, if you are used to using a normal DVD player, you will not believe how slow and unstable this player is. To start with, it takes FOREVER to load and start playing a disk. It will upconvert your normal DVDs, but is particularly unstable and unpredictable with non-blu-ray disks; it freezes for no apparent reason, and there is apparently nothing to do but crawl behind your entertainment center and unplug the unit, sort of like re-booting a computer.
The "open/close" button on the box is so well hidden that, for weeks, I didn't think there was one. I thought that if you lost your remote, you were never going to be able to remove the disk in the machine at the time. There actually is an "open/close" button on the machine, and page 58 of the manual will tell you where is hidden. I challenge anyone to find the open/close button without going to page 58 of the manual.
The biggest problem with ease of use is that the machine does not remember where you left off viewing the disk. If you pause or stop the disk for more than about 10 minutes, you have to start all over again and go through the piracy warnings, previews, and whatever other BS the maker of the disk wants to force you to watch.
With a Blu-ray or DVD disk, pressing a menu button is just a shot in the dark. Frankly, you never know where you're going to end up, or how to get back where you were. Be prepared to crawl and unplug. Apparently, there are patches for the problems available on the internet, but who ever heard of a DVD player that has to have its "firmware" updated every now and again? This machine will produce an almost surreal picture with a good hi-def television, if you have endless patience, but frankly this technology is just simply not ready for mass marketing yet.

yep, that's right. this costs more than the switch it is designed to go into, but it works and compared to something like a Cisco package with similiar features, it's still a bargain.
