The DVP-NS315B is compatible with just about every disc format out there, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW (video mode), CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CD. BNR (block-noise reduction) minimizes choppy image distortion during scenes where the whole image changes quickly. SmoothScan and SmoothSlow modes provide clean playback of DVD in slow motion and scan speeds.
Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize line scan and digital artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, and composite-video and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. The back panel offers one output each for composite-video, S-video, and component-video. A 10-bit video DAC with 27 MHz processing ensures accurate video with smooth gradations of color and contrast.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. Built-in 96 kHz, 24-bit linear PCM decoding extracts the full performance of all the linear PCM audio formats in CD and DVD-Video. You can also process two-channel sources for surround sound--Digital Cinema Sound DSP reproduces the precise acoustics of acclaimed Hollywood mastering stages. TV Virtual Surround System generates the effect of surround sound speakers, even when you're limited to the stereo speakers inside your TV. Instant Replay jumps back 10 seconds and commences play. It's great for those times when you miss a line of movie dialogue or when you just have to see that dance move again. Custom parental control locks playback of user-designated discs with a four-digit code, whether or not the discs carry an MPAA rating.

Excellent product that is aging in a techno world........2006-04-18
I've had my DVP-NS315 for several years and it has worked perfectly. It survived Hurricane Wilma! I bought it before having a HDTV, and although the picture quality is excellent, there are newer progressive-scan and/or up-conversion DVD players that outperform this unit. It's connected to my older 4/3 Sony TV and I'm looking for a up-conversion DVD unit.
Sony, we hardly knew ye!.......2005-10-04
We bought this Sony when our Philips DVD player (circa 2001) started getting finnicky about which DVD's it would play. I thought we'd do a little better with a Sony product. Not only did the Sony lack the Philips features, but it lasted a little over a year before it crapped out completely. I suspect Sony has joined the rest of the world in getting their products made in China, but I failed to check before I threw the box away. Sad that you can't expect durability from anyone. The old Philips player is still going though.
Lived less than two years.......2005-05-03
This was a great DVD player when it worked. It lasted less than two years, and I am incredibly disappointed. I bought it primarily on the Sony name. One day, I went to put in a DVD and it made a horribled noise and refused to play a single DVD.
This is actually the second Sony DVD player I have owned, and the other one met the same fate. I am not sure if it is just a bum player in a large lot of exceptional ones, or Sony does not make as good products anymore. This Player worked really good when it worked. It gave no warning, just crapped out. I also own a Panasonic DVD player that has outlasted both Sony's, so I dont know that I would buy another Sony. Just be careful and make sure you have a warranty when you purchase one and Good Luck!
A Very Good Unit.......2004-05-08
I bought mine when the first Lord of the Rings movie came out on DVD, so I have had it a while. So far it has been great. I do not want anything fancy; I just put in the DVD and watch the movie. I also have many concert DVD's, which look and sound great through my very good stereo system. I have had no problems playing concert DVD's and choosing specific songs from the menu. Also, mine has played CDR's many times with no problem. It is a very good basic unit.
Cannot play Disney DVD (and some others).......2004-03-25
I bought a brand new Finding Nemo DVD, 3 times, from 3 different places, and the dvd player would have problems playing it. The screen color would fade in and fade out, it was just terrible. I bought another brand new disney cartoon, same problem. The only DDVD i can play without any problem is "Lord of the Ring". Man, i will NEVER buy any Sony stuff ....at least not the low end DVD player.

I use my magellan color gps everywhere and while in the car I use this adaptor. This is a replacement for my original unit. I save enough on batteries that it pays for itself. I highly recommend this.
