Outstanding Performance
All of Toshiba's HD DVD players support the enhanced features of the HD DVD format, including picture-in-picture video, audio commentary, and Web-enabled network capabilities. With an Ethernet port, the A30 can connect to the Internet for firmware updates to keep the player up to date on new features, and to support the growing number of HD DVD titles with interactive online features and bonus content.
The HD-A30 uses the latest HDMI 1.3 interface to connect to your HD television, providing large bandwidth to eliminate any data bottlenecks and to support new technologies for the utmost in viewing experience. If you have a large collection of standard definition DVDs, the HD-A30 will upconvert them to near-HD quality for display on your HD television. I bought the A3 (1080i) for myself, and my son bought the A30 (1080p) for himself, they both work great! Easy to set up out of the box using the internet hookup... Just hook up to the DSL cable and it does the rest, downloads the latest software for carefree operation and viewing... just be patient and follow instructions... if you cannot hook up and download, Toshiba will send you a CD to download the info. Picture and audio quality are great. As one reviewer stated, good response time to remote commands, but a bit slower than a standard DVD player... much more data to load. Also, does a great job upscaling my standard DVDs to look like HD... As for the competitive battle between HD and Blu-ray, no problem, we all win... the prices keep falling... maybe when Blu-ray reaches a reasonable price as has the Toshiba HD, I'll purchase that as well... then I'll have a true choice of what I watch.
Simply outstanding.......2007-12-24
I sat on the sidelines for a long while, waiting for the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war to come to some conclusion, but I am extraordinarily happy that I've finally jumped it. With the great price that Amazon had on this player, and the bundled movies that came with it, I couldn't see waiting any longer.
I replaced an Onkyo 6 disc changer with this Toshiba. The Onkyo was connected with component cables, while the Toshiba is connected with HDMI. The picture quality is outstanding with HD-DVDs and at very good with the one normal DVD that I tried. My TV is an older 720p Samsung DLP TV, and the difference is still noticeable. I can't WAIT until I get a 1080p TV.
The only potential negatives: It takes a while to start up. It's about twice as long as my old Onkyo, but there's a lot going on in there.
I've greatly enjoyed Blade Runner, Serenity, Mission Impossible III and The Bourne Identity on HD-DVD so far, as well as Battlestar Galactica on regular DVD. The only thing better than the picture quality is the sound quality. I've paired this with an outstanding Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver, and the sound is good enough to make your jaw drop!
Highly recommended. I see no reason to buy Blu-Ray. I can suffer along with upconverted DVDs for those movies until the world becomes more sane. And Netflix rocks with their support for HD-DVD.
1080p/24 force option?.......2007-12-23
Not! The ps3 offers forced 1080p/24 options, but not Toshiba. Many TVs can display 24 hzt option, but only if forced, otherwise they revert to their native 60 hz display, which is not capable of 1080p/24 without 3:2 pull down. Excellent picture/sound if TV can display 1080p/24.
Awesome Picture quality compared to some Blu-Ray players and movies I seen!.......2007-12-22
I always watch Blue-Ray movies at my friends house on his 50inch samung 1080p t.v. I decided to get a HD player because the movies, HD player are cheaper then Blue-Ray movies and players. Of course at the time Toshiba was offering a promotion with 2 free HD DVDs with player, and $20 off 2 day air shipping so it cost like $5.00 to ship it. So since I was planning to get one anyway I took advantage of this promotion. I have watched it in 1080i and picture and sound are amazing. I never seen Matrix look so good.
I can not see any difference between his Blu-Ray on his 50inch 1080p or my HD in 1080i 42inch Samsung. It's going to be obvious who last in the market and with Toshiba and HD selling these DVDS and players at such a great price. All I can say is if you haven't picked a Toshiba HD player up. DO SO! You won't regret it.
My friend is in sales and sells a lot of high end equipment. He tells me a lot after the meetings they have every month with Sony, pioneer, etc. Don't let these manufactures fool you. There is not going to be a difference in 1080i or 1080p. There is NO STANDERED for contrast, screen resolution, picture quality, etc. It's all done by manufacture specifications and each manufacture is going to be different. I seen $7,000.00 Plasma t.v. made by pioneer that run in 720p and looked better then any 1080i or 1080p, t.v. out in the market. This is something manufactures would not tell you. Its up to the customer to do the studying.

I got this player about a month ago and I love it. I already started my HDDVD collection. The best part of HDDVD is that lot of the movies come in DVD/HDDVD combo so my kids can enjoy it in the car in the DVD player. This was the main reason I decided to pick HDDVD instead of Blueray. I believe Blueray can't produce a duel format so in order for my kids to enjoy it, we would have to buy a DVD and a Blueray disc...no way I am buying both dics. HDDVD should win the format war for this reason alone.
Parents will not buy kids movies if they can't play it in their car.

The key word in this review is easy. In 5 mins I was all hooked up and ready to go. Sharing files, internet, and printers all of it was very easy. So far it is working great with my DSL internet connection providing speed to both computers.
