Has some glitches, but mostly works.......2007-12-26
Recently, I setup this phone for my parents (located in India). The initial setup was easy; the phone has a interface similar to the Skype software; voice quality is reasonably good even with a 128kbps internet connection.
Here are a few issues with this device...
- The handset hangs each time there's a power outage (read a discussion about this issue at http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=10453 for details on this issue). Even thought, it's been a year since the release of the phone, this issue has not been fixed by the firmaware updates
- Volume of the handset, even with the speakerphone turned ON is low
- The text on the phone & the screen could have been larger, for easier reading by seniors
Another issue with the Skype calling plans --- SkypePro does not include unlimited calls to US/Canada from India (and other non-SkypePro countries). So, check the details of the plan before you buy the phone.
Failed to connect to Skype.......2007-12-07
I've spent 3 hours trying to make this phone work with Skype. Nothing helped. I've found some reviews on other websites and it seems like many people have the same problem - the phone fails to establish a connection with Skype, which makes this product useless.
Good voice quality; feels like a normal phone... *BUT*..........2007-12-05
This phone is everything a skype user wanted in order to obtain pc freedom. I have been very satisfied because it really feels like a regular phone. The voice quality is excellent. Occasionally the calls get dropped. I am hoping for a firmware upgrade to resolve this. I must add this is not my main discontent with this phone. The main and utmost annoying thing is the CONTINUOUS BEEP when I am already on a call and decide to reject an incoming call. The beep continues throughout the conversation. It's EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I have tried everything possible, including turning off the notification tones, but nothing helps. The only way I have found to avoid this issue is by picking up the incoming call. However, I don't always want to interrupt a present call, therefore I suffer thru the rest of the conversation. OR I hang up and call the person again. I must say that this quality is sufficient for me to return this phone, however it's too late now and I am stuck with it! Unless of course, someone knows how to fix this!!
Awesome SKYPE/Landline Phone!.......2007-12-04
This Netgear phone is by far the best Skype phone I've used. You don't need a computer, for starters. The voice quality is top-notch. I talk a lot on the phone and have not encountered any problems with running the rechargeable batteries down (if I did, I'd just throw in a few AA's to tide me over). The set-up could not have been simpler: simply plug the included base receiver (that has a PAGING BUTTON in case you misplace the phone) into your router and if you have a landline phone jack, plug that in too. That's it. It configures itself.
All the skype options you're used to, such as availability, friends list..all that, is right on the phone's screen. Change your status, history, phone book, credit, voicemail...I could go on. Plus, you can use the phone where there is non encrypted wifi service too, but I just use mine around the yard/house. Excellent range on this thing. Oh, and the speakerphone is great. People can't seem to tell which is strange to me. I never have had the chance to use the intercom button since I have only one handset, but when I push it, it wants me to select from 4 other handsets to talk to...real cool. I purchased and returned 3 other Skype-enabled phones until I found the right one. I'll be keeping this one. Have had it now for a few months.

Reasonable price, very easy set-up, it works just great! The user-friendly menu in the phone allows you to configure it to your liking, and the features, such as the history, contacts, and others, makes this phone fun to use. My wife, who is not at all a 'techi', enjoys using this phone...highly recommended.
