      2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-12-15

We bought this product with a hopeful attitude. Once we set it up, I was pushing away a nagging feeling that this might be a mistake. We decided to give a day or two...First, let me say that the rings made me feel like a cat hanging from the ceiling. There was no happy medium between the old style of rings and the new digitized selections. Accessing the call log was difficult and everytime a new call came in there was an annoying red light that would flash. I got so frustrated with the phones that we packed them up and sent them back...phones should not be so complicated to use! We are going to try the Siemens 6.0 instead...

      2 out of 5 stars I can't wait to return these phones.......2007-12-13

I have had this system for approximately 2 weeks. I purchased them to replace a Uniden system that I have for 5 years. Unfortunately cost of replacing batteries for Uniden exceeded cost of new system so I purchased the Philips phones.

On the positive side the system uses standard AA rechargable batteries unlike the Uniden system that required expensive, difficult to find & unreliable specialty batteries.

That's about the only positive thing. Design of phone is attractive however they feel cheaply made, are very light and have poor ergonomics. Flash/call waiting feature rarely works. Sound quality is very poor. You do not hear your own voice from the receiver when speaking which is disconcerting. Functions are not intuitive.

My family rarely agrees about anything however they universally dislke these phones. We cant't wait to get rid of them.

      4 out of 5 stars Does a great job.......2007-12-11

      1 base/answering machine w/handset + 3 satellite handsets = 4 handsets (black)

      PROs:
First of all, let me say the ergonomic design of the CD445X series is wonderful; handsome, refined, and slim w/great weight/balance characteristics. It fits very well into one's hand. Contrary to the colour appearance displayed on Amazon (grey) the units are actually 'black'.

Range is very good with crystal clear audio. DECT 6.0 is the global standard...

Audio codec: G.726 (digital encryption, not easy to ease-drop)

Time slots: 2 x 12 (up and down stream)
      Channel allocation: dynamic
Average transmission power: 10 mW (250 mW peak) in Europe, 4 mW (100 mW peak) in the US

Languages for menus and predefined out going messages ( North American model ): English, Español, and Français.

The 'speaker phone' function on each of the units ( phones ) indeed produces high quality sound (HD as Philips puts it), but when listening to a conversation through the conventional method, the phone's ear piece, the sound is the typical flat quality w/a slight increase in dynamics.

      CONs:
'Contrast levels' of the display -- it has low dynamic contrast ratio making it a bit difficult to read, for some. If you're far-sighted (hyperopia), like myself, but manage to be able to read a phone display w/some difficulty w/o your glasses, as I do, you'll likely find yourself unable to see any display data/identity (caller ID). [ My theory: the character fonts are displayed in a semi dark blue. When you combine the text w/bright blue back lighting, the overall affect produces a seemingly unavoidable washout. The text is still there -- just not as vivid as it could be. Even w/adjusting contrast ratios (1-5) to 5, it appears to make little impact on text. ]

As mentioned by previous reviewers, the menu system is a little bit archaic but nothing you can't overcome.

      I'll keep it... for now.

      Hope this has been helpful.

3 out of 5 stars The designers did not grok this product........2007-10-29

To begin with the sound quality of this phone is fine. I guess some might consider that to be the most important quality of a wireless phone. I have a lot of "wireless" traffic in my home -- a separate wireless G and a separate wireless N network, as well as a totally separate phone system also running on DECT 6.0. I bought this phone specifically because it was DECT 6.0, but I honestly don't find it any much "clearer" in quality than the old 5.whatever gigahertz phone that this replaced.

One particularly nice feature of this phone is that it uses standard triple A rechargeable batteries. The previous phone system that this replaced was a Uniden, and the hassle of finding the specific right batteries to replace in the handsets units was way too much trouble. On top of that, the price point of the replacement batteries were such that by adding about another $50, I was able to just buy another new phone system. Granted, that was replacing 3 batteries in a Uniden 3 phone system versus buying this unit and getting only 2 handsets. However, a couple of days after I bought this unit, there was a pretty significant price drop and now for about $10 more than what I paid, I could have bought this exact same Philips unit, but with 3 instead of 2 handsets.

Now the problems with the unit. This unit was clearly designed by engineers without some sort of human interface guidelines to direct them. As a user, there are certain things that I expect to be in certain places and certain things that I expect to be able to do with a minimum number of keystrokes. This unit lacks certain features that I have become accustomed to in other phones and sometimes just makes simple tasks overly complex because of the cumbersome menu structure the phone uses.

A couple of quirks? For example, when a person calls in with caller ID, the screen alternates between the person's name and the person's phone number. The person's name and the person's phone number are not displayed on the screen at the same time. I can live with that. However, when displaying the person's name, only the first line of the two line display is utilized. The second line isn't used. So you end up getting the first person's name "chopped" at the end of the first line and a completely blank second line. It would seem that they could use both lines and perhaps have the first name on the top line and the last name on the bottom line.

Next, when you get a missed call a little light flashes on the handset. In order to see who called you have to press the "CID" button, then click "OK" for the call list. You then see the name of the person who called, the time and date that they called. Now I would like to be able to delete this caller from this point with a single press of a button. Instead, I have to click "OK", press the scroll button down, to go from "Copy to Phonebook" to "Delete" and then click "OK" again. It's taken me 3 button presses just to delete a caller ID entry. Now I can do this for every caller entry or I can just press down each time to view each caller entry, then press "OK" and then press down TWICE to get to "Delete All" and then press "OK" and then press "OK" again when the screen prompts me with "Delete All?" ... You see what I mean?!?!?

Another quirk that I have, and this is a minor quirk that might not apply to many people, is that you can't assign specific ring tones to specific callers. I use to be able to do this with the old Uniden unit that I had. On this phone you have three caller groups that you can assign specific ring tones to. A phone book entry tagged within a specific caller group will play the specific ring tone of the caller group. The problem is that I might want a specific ring tone for my wife's cell phone. Unless I put her into a caller group without anyone else, I won't be able to get a unique ring tone when she calls. Using it this way limits me to only having 3 specific ring tones. It would be nice if I could have specific caller groups AND the ability to assign specific ring tones to individual phone book entries.

So in summary, it's usability issues like this that prevent me from giving this phone system a higher score. Ideally I would like to give it a 3.5 star rating because, as I previously said at the beginning of this review, it works well when you just look at the clarity of it as a phone. There would be no point in having the best user interface designed phone, but really crappy sound quality. But then again, having a clear phone with a really cumbersome interface does get tiring to use.

      3 out of 5 stars Almost.......2007-10-22

I almost kept this phone. Looks nice, sound was fine, some slight distortion of some voice infections.
I wanted a phone that showed caller id on caller waiting calls. Advertised as being such, but after calling Phillips I was told the second call is not displayed.
I did like the speaker in the hand set function, as I'm getting hard of hearing, and this feature makes it loud, but everyone can hear my phone call. Over all a decent phone.
