Note: Panasonic is discontinuing its popular 5100 series. Check out the newer 5200 series instead, like the Panasonic KX-TG5240M GigaRange Supreme 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System.
A 5.8 GHz DSS cordless phone from Panasonic, the KX-TG5100M provides both excellent quality and a number of useful features, including an integrated digital answering system and caller ID with call waiting compatibility. By utilizing the less congested 5.8 GHz frequency and digital spread spectrum technology, the KX-TG5100M offers clear, intelligible reception even at a distance. Multiuser expandable, the KX-TG5100M supports up to seven optional handsets (plus one included, for a total of eight) and features handset-to-handset call transfer, as well as two-way intercom between the base and any of the handsets. A call privacy feature lets you determine if other handsets can join in on the conversation, while the page feature makes locating a lost handset into a snap. The KX-TG5100M features 50 caller ID memory locations and a built-in speakerphone for hands-free operation.
Wall-mountable, freeing up valuable desktop space, the KX-TG5100M is also headset compatible (a belt-clip is provided) saving your neck from the strain of cradling the phone. The integrated three-mailbox digital answering system has a record time of up to 15 minutes, while remote message check lets you stay in touch even while you are away. The NiCad battery provides about 4.5 hours of talk time and 11 days of standby, while a low battery indicator lets you know when the phone needs recharging. A time/date stamp lets you know when each message was received, and a 50 number phone directory lets you easily find and dial the most frequently used phone numbers. The KX-TG5100M also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

Panasonic KX-TG5100M 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System.......2007-10-10
The Panasonic KX-TG5100M 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System is JUNK. I owned one previously to the one I just purchased and I threw it away, I love the Features but the handsets never work. I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this product. I did return the Item and received a refund but lost $20 in S&H charges.
hevykevy.......2007-04-26
I've owned the KX-TG5100M for three years now with a total of four handsets. Sure, I had to replace the original batteries after the first year ($70 for four NiMhs from Panasonic), but otherwise I've had no other problem with it. I've used the intercom feature on it a lot to talk to family members on different floors, and we've even used one of the handsets in a "baby monitor" fashion (while in the charging cradle even!) with out any problems. My only disappointments are, that the base unit's speaker phone has no mute function and that the handset's speaker phone function won't work while it's sitting in the charging cradle. Having skimmed most of the previous reviews, my comments are: I live in N. Illinois where there lightning storms and you absolutely need to use a surge protector on BOTH the AC line AND the telephone line (in the past I've lost at least one base unit [different makes], and in another case I had to replace the surge protector, which saved the telephone base unit I might add [much cheaper], after a nearby lightning strike took it out); also, when you buy an additional additional handset, you have to place it in cradle on the base unit for a few moments (assuming the new handset's battery has been fully charged!) in order for the base unit to "recognize" the new handset. e.g.[ASIN:B000NCTIE4 Cordless Phone Surge Protector]]
Good for over 2 years.......2007-04-02
I bought this phone used, on eBay, about 2 1/2 years ago. I did a lot of reading before I bought it and found that there is a known issue with battery life of the handsets. For everyone that has mentioned battery life, there is a solution.
When I bought the phone, the station with 2 handsets was $60 on eBay. I immediately ordered 2 Energizer ER-P511 NiMH batteries to replace the Panasonic throw aways. I had the battery life problem with my previous Panasonic phone set, but, this set never dies! My family has talked for hours on a single charge and left the handset in a few interesting places, only to be found again with the paging system and plenty of battery life. At 2 hours of talk time, it still shows two bars.
The voice quality is not the best, but, it's not bad either. I use Vonage and no one can tell that I'm not on a traditional line. It's definately better than any of the 2.4 GHz phones out there.
The range is more than I need so I can't complain about it. I can go to the corner of my back yard on the opposite side of the house from the base station and experience minimal static. I've gone so far as to walk to the end of our street (a cul de sac) and still had enough coverage to carry a conversation, although it was a weak signal at that point.
Overall, I would have given the phone 5 stars if I didn't have to provide my own batteries to make it useable.
third time i buy it.......2007-02-20
i buy this telephone with 6 optional phones to all my rooms but is the third time i have to buy the main phone base because it only last aproximately 2 1/2 years and because of the investment i have in the 6 phones i have to be buying the main base again and again.
Great phone - bad batteries.......2006-05-19
The phone works great, although the headset volume could be a little "hotter." I don't program #'s in the phone or base station, so I can't comment there. The answering machine works fine and sounds good. The handset and base station speakers are acceptable for talking to friends and family, but I wouldn't hold a work conference call on either if I could avoid it. My house is on a 1 acre lot and the handset maintains clear communication anywhere on my property.
As mentioned in other reviews, the handset batteries are horrible, but they can be easily replaced with ER-P511 NiMH from Energizer. I've been unable to run that battery down. If the batteries from Panasonic were worth anything, I'd have given the phone 5 stars.
