Great TV.......2007-12-11

The picture is very clear. I can see the print without my glasses. I am glad it has the 1080 pixels which is superior to the 760 version. The TV arrived sooner than expected. It is easy to put together and is light in weight. I chose the Sharp Aquos over the Sony XBR for 3 reasons. Sony didn't have a 37-inch size and Consumer Reports rated the Sony and the Sharp equally. The Sharp is less expensive for the same picture quality.

I bought this TV the last week of November, and have had it for about 2 weeks. The picture was phenomenal, right out of the box. I'd give this 5 stars, based on the following:

PROS:

* VERY nice picture. Watching NBA and NFL was like putting on glasses for the 1st time. I immediately noticed details that I've never seen before...and this was just on a 37" TV! I've already had 2 friends buy one of these after coming over to see mine. I can't get enough of the Discovery Channel's HD offerings! I loved them before, but they are night-and-day better in HD!!!
* GREAT console. The TV fits nicely in my living room, and has a very attractive black casing.
* VERY nice picture. It' SO good, I needed to mention it twice!!!
* EASY set up. The TV is packaged so that you can fasten the base onto the TV without removing it from the foam bumpers. This prevents the screen from getting scratched while (alternatively) lying it on the floor during installation. Great packaging!!!
* NICELY laid out jacks. The TV has 2 HDMI and 3 Component jacks. One jack has an S-Video-In which takes priority over one set of Components. The back of the tv is indented and has 2 clips that nestle your input cables and channel them to the lower back-center of the TV. This will help reduce the clutter behind your TV.

CONS:

* Sound. As mentioned by other reviewers, the sound isn't anything special. Of course, you'll probably be hooking a TV like this up to a receiver...but if you don't, you won't be overly impressed with the audio.
* Volume. In a less than ideal environment,(i.e. dishwasher running in the background, spouse talking in the other room...) the max volume setting seems a little low. Again, this is solved with a receiver, but I would have liked a higher max setting.
* No side inputs. The gaming version (appx $200 more) has a special gamer-setting, and includes a side input. I can' imagine that they cost that much, and I feel that at least ONE side-input should have been standard...

I love this TV!!!! I don't know how I put up with standard definition and my old CRT TV!!! I can confidently recommend this TV to you!!!

On a side note, I bought this TV over the 780p model. In case you're wondering, 'yes' you can tell the difference between 1080p and 780p on this TV! Pay the extra couple hundred and get the 1080p!!!

Also, I plan on using this TV for occasional gaming (Halo 3). If you're looking for a TV PRIMARILY for gaming, I'd suggest going down to the 32" 1080p version (LC32D62U or LC32GP1U-gaming)

Best of the lot.......2007-12-05

We returned a Toshiba 37" because we just could not get a decent picture. Thought it might be our cable or other sources. The Sharp was a revelation. Vastly superior color, great reception and with a HD DVD the picture is nearly 3D. We may have paid more than planned, $1,299.00 vs. $899.00 for the Toshiba but after several weeks of viewing feel the Sharp was worth the extra money.

Great picture, cheap details.......2007-11-27

Let me first say, I do not own this Sharp TV, but feel somewhat qualified to give my point-of-view.

Like many of you, I was limited to a 37" set due to existing cabinet restrictions. Wife would not let me get rid of the existing furniture, etc.... Due to the configuration of our cabinet, even the new 40" narrow bezel sets were not going to work for us. So, I made a project to find the best 37".

Here were the issues I (we) face:

- The only 37" plasma ever made is now out of production (Panasonic)
- Most of the major manufactures do not make 37" any longer (it seems 40 is the new 37)
- Wanted full 1080p
- Wanted maximum hook-up options

So my choices were limited to three:
- Sharp Aquos LC37D62U
- JVC LT-37X688
- LG 37LB5D

I was lucky my local Fry's electronics store had all three of these models displayed side-by-side. Plus they do not tend to have aggressive salesmen lurking around try to "help". I was able to spend a couple hours (over a several visits), playing with all three sets. I was free to select HD and SD inputs, and adjust all the settings. Here is what I found:

- Picture quality on all three was really very good... the latest generation of LCD sets have really come a long way. I am picky, and would not have considered an LCD before now.

- Overall HD picture quality on the Sharp was just very slightly better than the other two (very very close here, and may even be psychological since I had expected the Sharp to look best).

- SD and DVD picture quality on the LG was the best

- Color accuracy was the best on the LG (easiest adjustment to get natural/warm tones)

- Viewing angle on the LG was the widest

- On screen menu system on the LG was the best (although Sharp was good also)

- LG has three HDMI inputs (the others have only two). Three HDMI is the new standard, and will be important in many cases (DVD player + satellite + home network box or video game = 3).

- LG remote was clearly the best (Sharp remote was oversized, illogical, and cheap feeling)

- The sound on the Sharp was abysmal (tinny sound, max volume level far too low). Honestly, this $1200 TV sounded like a $5 AM radio.

- The JVC was the best value ($999 on Amazon today), and would be a good choice for a bedroom set.

Conclusion: I purchased the LG 37LB5D, and am very happy. Simply put, LG gave the highest impression of quality. I know this sounds strange, since I have never really considered LG a "premium brand" before now. It took a few weeks of inner reflection, to pick the LG over the respected Sharp brand.

It seems Sharp spent all the money on the excellent LCD panel itself, and really economized on the details (sound, remote, connection options, etc...). Good TV, but no cigar.

Three bad ones from ButterflyPhoto.......2007-11-19

I ordered a LC37D62U 37" AQUOS HD LCD TV from Butterflyphoto through their Amazon link Nov 1st. I wanted the largest set I could fit in my existing cabinet and it looked the perfect size. The first arrived dead. It wouldn't even power-up. Butterflyphoto gave me a really hard time before agreeing to exchange it. They said don't accept a damaged box when a replacement is delivered. The 2nd came with a hole punched down to the screen. I refused it. The 3rd one FedEx didn't even try and deliver. The tracking number reported it too damaged to deliver. Butterflyphoto didn't double box any of them as their website advertises. They still haven't pick up the 1st one as of Nov 19th and don't return calls or e-mails. Now I'll have to deal with the hassle of disputing it through my credit-card company to try and get a refund. These TVs seem too fragile too ship. Go buy one in a store and check and get the return policy in writing.
