Great Device.......2007-12-24
This is my 2nd networked harddrive. My first was a device that used SCSI software for an interface and has repeatedly been problematic. I was referred to Lacie by Apple and it has been a great choice. This device is accessible to any networked computer by accessing it's IP address. A terrific product for anyone that wants to store data and access it from multiple computers on the network. NO SOFTWARE REQUIRED.

I purchased this drive to replace a Buffalo drive that had failed (quite spectacularly, I might add). I am an independent software development consultant, and need to make daily backups of project source and data, so it was very important that I find a more solid solution than I had previously.
When I purchased the drive there were no reviews available, but the price was attractive and I had not heard anything negative about the manufacturer, and it had all of the features I was looking for.
The drive installation on the network was absolutely painless, and all 5 machines on my local network are able to seamlessly connect to the drive. Three of the machines are Windows machines which simply have the drive mapped so as to appear as a local drive. The other two machines are Ubuntu Linux machines, which can connect via Samba without any trouble. One of the Linux machines also uses the FTP capability of the drive for automated backups, and I haven't had any problems with that either.
The web administration is painfully slow, but provides nearly everything I would want for remote administration, and the slowness is tempered by the fact that administration is one of those uncommon tasks (such as setting up a new share) that only happens a few times a year.
The drive is whisper-quiet, quite possibly the quietest external drive I have. Access times and data transfer rates seem quite good, though I've not been motivated to test them, which I take as a good sign. The case is very sturdy, much more so than I would have thought by looking at the product picture.
I've not owned the drive long enough to comment on the long-term reliability, since it seems most drives will run perfectly for a year or more before problems, but the solid construction and low noise levels leave me hopeful that this will be much more reliable than previous backup drives.
