A not reliable drive.......2007-12-06
I bought it for 16 months but did not use it until 8 months ago to store my research data. The swing design for the USB adaptor started to break within a few weeks. It crashed a few days ago and the data could not be recovered. The service center asked me to keep trying on different computers as the only solution but it did not work. Now I have to back up all the research data on 2 or 3 flask drives after this bad experience. Do not need to waste the time to contact the service center since they can not help you either. The quality of the service is very much like the USCIS service center, it is there to show that they will help you but they are actually not.

It only lasts for one day,I can't believe how fast it dies. The first time I used it, it got very hot and for some reason it caused my machine to run very slowly.

I have been using this device for several months now. The first time I used it, it became unusually hot. Since then, I have not left it connected longer than it takes to transfer my files and have had no problems with any of the reliability issues that others have described. There may be better products out there for the price. Read the reviews and decide for yourself.

Never had any problems for 22 months....I loved this huge portable drive except for its heat-- I would always let it cool somewhat before storing it back in its case; I figured the heat was okay as long it was out in the open air...until the day no computer would detect it! I never used the twisting/swivel option on the connector up until a couple months ago because I figured the constant twisting back & forth on the wires COULDN'T be good for them--and then only because someone I was working for twisted it to that 90' angle before I could get the extension cord out to use-- so maybe this has something to do with it....

Great KVM over IP solution.......2006-02-28
Firstly, Amazon.com saved me roughly $250 over standard MSRP and estimated shipping on this item, the SV1110IPEXT from Startech. I used Amazon's super saver shipping option (for free) and received the product within just a few days via UPS Ground delivery.
I'm using the product to access the KVM switch at my tech bench across town. I am familiar with using RealVNC and the original VNC software for direct PC access for the past six years, but this device adds the ability to adjust settings in BIOS and view the entire reboot process on a connected PC (whereas typically a VNC native server must have a shell such as Windows to be accessible).
Everything I can do locally through my KVM switch can be done through the SV1110IPEXT via VNC. This product has saved me countless hours of travel time in the short month I've owned and operated it, simply for the fact I now needn't drive across town to "push the next button" when troubleshooting client software at my tech bench. Since waiting on PCs to complete a task is the most mundane and time-consuming part of PC troubleshooting, I can now move on to other things and check into my KVM swith later to perform the next steps. In short, this has meant more comfort as a technician being able to do complete much of my work while at home, away from the tech bench.
One other note: Startech's technical support was prompt and courteous for my inquiries, even though I didn't purchase their product directly through their website or sales department. Upon my first attempt to establish a DHCP network LAN connection with the SV1110IPEXT, I had no success and e-mailed their support team that evening. By next morning I had a personal message from one of their technicians with the answers I needed. As it turns out, for whatever reason, this particular SV1110IPEXT had its DHCP disabled. In order to perform a master reset and reconfigure the LAN and DHCP options, I needed to connect a serial (DB9 a.k.a. RS232) cable from the device to a PC, and using Windows HyperTerminal, I was able to get everything working properly for the LAN connection.
Next I hope to use the USB feature of the SV1110IPEXT to connect to my FTP server for software access--the ability of the device to emulate a USB CD-ROM drive will be another invaluable timesaver across all the platforms I work with. Hopefully soon, with all the commute time I'm saving, I'll be able to review this particular feature as well.
I use this product nearly every day and have found it to be the single most worthwhile addition to my tech bench. Thanks again, Startech, and of course, thank you Amazon!
