Sealed external = unwise solution.......2007-11-21
My 3200 external drive was the essence of simplicity to use - open the box, plug it in, and everything is right there. Didn't have to worry about large drives not working with my system (as I would have with an internal), USB2 worked wonderfully wherever I took the drive.
Unfortunately, the drive is in a sealed plastic case. Plastic is an insulator rather than a conductor of heat, and electronics/hard drives need to avoid heat. I should have thought of that before I moved all my files to the drive, but my cynicism circuit wasn't engaged properly.
Very suddenly (after a few months of use) it started getting slightly noisy. I took this as a sign of impending failure and immediately stopped using the drive. Went and bought another drive and attempted to back up all my data, but now the Maxtor drive absolutely refuses to spin up at all. I would surely be able to get a replacement, but really that's not much consolation as data recovery is impossible without disassembling the drive case and forfeiting the warranty replacement.
In the future, I will not be buying another "external hard drive." Rather, a better solution is to purchase an aluminum external drive enclosure by itself (they are quite inexpensive) and plug a standard internal hard drive into the enclosure. The chance of heat-induced failure is much reduced, and if there's a problem with the enclosure's circuitry you won't automatically lose your data because you can just move the hard drive to another computer or another enclosure.
Bottom line: I would strongly recommend not purchasing any "external" hard drives in prepackaged form.

Tricky to setup. Worked on Vista, took a few tries to get it to appear in XP. Worked fine for 30 days, but the power supply died. Can't even return it, since I already threw out the box.

This product works seamlessly; as it was designed to do. It also boost my system. Easy to install; one would think that I purchased it with my computer. Oh! Great for storage; this product is an excellent buy.

Should be no stars. I owned this drive for 4 months and it just stopped working. I found out that the circuit board that controls the drive shorted out. I called Seagate (Maxtor was bought out) and they would do nothing for data recovery. The only thing Maxtor on this drive is the case. Inside it is the worst piece of Seagate garbage ever made. I took it to Best Buy to recover the data and they couldn't do a thing. I called Seagate to get a couple of apologetic Indians from India who stated Data Recovery is not covered and it would be a minumum of $700.00 to get the data back. This is a great racket Seagate has made. They sell you a cheap drive then take your data hostage for $700.00. If you are smart, stay away from this drive at all costs! It is not a Maxtor!!

Installed on Windows 2000 system. Drive is PNP. Setup time, less than 5 minutes. !/2 terabyte drive. Lots of space. Easy to partition. Drive tends to power down during idle time but otherwise has fast access considering the size. Good quality, competitive pricing, fast shipping. Has been in use for 6 months without any issues.
