I work a lot with audio and need a lot of drive space. Got a couple of these to take around with me while traveling.
Setup one on Mac, with no problem. If you're on a Mac and looking for something for Time Machine, this is a good one. Just plug it in, Time Machine recognizes it, and you're done.
Setup one on PC, with no problem. Software which comes with the drive is quick and easy to install and backup via USB 2.0 is quick.

Throughout my family, we own 4 of these drives. With that said, I am still going to make an unbiased and realistic review for this product without bashing, trolling, or any of the other out of line comments I see on here.
First of all, this external drive is FAST, QUIET and looks nice enough to leave on the top of my desk. It transfers at super speeds, usually being close to the max speed for USB 2.0. T
The cost is NOT prohibitive for dollar vs. GB of storage. The portability of that amount of data is wonderful too.
It is supported by any MODERN windows operating systems from 98 (with USB 2.0 drivers) to VISTA and all in-between; I've NEVER had any problem with it - from my server operating systems at work to my home pc AND even my Q1 Samsung mobile PC.
It does require a power supply (ALL cables are included in the box), in addition to a no-brainer install (even my 98 year old Great grandmother plugged hers in wihtout calling me for help).
Finally, just make sure you have an extra 110/120V outlet on your surge protector and 'Bob's yer uncle'. There is no easier way to store, backup, or simply transfer files for the price!

Listen, I like a deal like everyone else. I do the math and I compare the prices and consistently LaCie drives are the best bang for the buck. But are they really?
Simply put, I've owned two of these and within, or just after a year of use, BOTH have failed. It's that simple. If the failure falls within the year warranty, and assuming you purchased it from one of their "authorized" resellers (and can prove it), they'll replace it fairly hassle free. Over a year, and you are SOL, as they say.
I used mine for daily back up and media storage. Once the first failed and was replaced under warranty, (thinking it was a fluke), I bought another and started mirroring the two drives for redundancy. I'm glad I did.
Life expectancy of drives varies. I'd say it's safe to expect 3-5 years. With that said, I've owned and built my own computers since 95 and have only had one drive failure and that was on a 5 year old machine. As for those who say that external drives are not intended to be run 24/7, I don't buy that. In my opinion, a well designed external drive should be able to run just as well as an internal drive.
There's really not much more I can say about these drives. Ascetically there nice enough to look at & they're fairly quiet. But again, what does any of that matter if they FAIL. They FAIL.

I'm a film student and I use this to store all my cuts and carry my films from the Lab at school back home for late night edits on my Macbook Pro.
I have never noticed a lot of noise, but this could also be because in a College Mac Lab, the silence isn't deafening.
I like that it's firewire, it's much faster than usb and I would definitly suggest any kind of firewire drive.

When I purchased this drive about 8 months ago, I read some reviewers who had problems with the drive basically self-destructing.
Well, about a week ago this drive starts clicking, thankfully I backed up my data in time. Today, I turn it on and it's dead, just making loud clicking noises.
I cannot recommend this drive, given that it was pretty slow when it worked. Only thing that attracted me were the looks, but I won't make that mistake again.

Works great. No hang ups ... great voice quality. Super wireless coverage though I did end up swappin in a cheap 9db antenna to make it better. Pure plug and Play ... worked first time ... every time. All my peripherals are networked and they all communicate with the ethernet ports and the wireless connections. Highly recommend it if you can still find one!
vonage d-link adapter review.......2007-07-03
The product works fine except for one thing. I cannot connect my OKI laser printer to it and have it network wirelessly with my other computers (not compatible). Luckily, I have two adapters and the other Linksys wireless adapter does work with it.

I bought this router because my old Linksys Vonage Wireless Router caused a delay when receiving calls. I connected this up and everything was fixed! Actually, this has caused more problems.
Now when I visit websites I get random "Server Not Found" errors. It's not my web browser, cable model, email or configuration. It also happens on my other PC.
It also randomly would occur in Thunderbird, in my FTP program and my Postage software. I switched out the router and everything works fine again.
My opinion is that all the Vonage Wireless Routers are garbage. I'm done with Vonage. They were great a year ago and have now ent way downhill. I'll pay an extra $20 month to not deal with so so many problems.
Vonage - Dlink VWR WIFI router.......2007-01-07
I'm sorry to say that I've purchased and used this device. If I could have went below one star I would have done so. Basically this router doesn't do all that it is touted to handle. It hangs quite regularly (bad in any event). It fails to display accurate status lights when services are disabled. It provides inadequate WIFI support since all of the security functions don't work. The DHCP server doesn't always function correctly. And even the VoIP functions weirdly at times. So all in all, I would not recommend this router to anyone, even an enemy. I'd feel bad for making anyone suffer with the poor service it provides.
