I got my first LaCie 4 years ago and filled it up. They are expensive, so I tried and off brand as my second and it was the pits. I bought another LaCie and it is perfect for me and my mac.
If you use a mac, I suggest no other brand.
What's not to like?.......2007-08-08
Ordered on friday, recieved on monday, set it up the same day. I have a MacBook Pro and the unit was already set up for it. All I really needed to do was plug in the 800 wire to the unit, plug the 110v cord to the wall and that was it. Total no brainer. One click backup works great. It took longer to read the directions than anything else. Buy it.

Trash product unworthy of Amazon's customers.......2007-06-12
First unit had intermittent shorts; and repeatedly crashed, taking PC down with it. Replacement unit was even worse than original. Firewire 400 connection was delivered defective and non-functional. Drive had to be formatted and only worked via USB. Units are dead-dog slow in transferring data files (i.e. 5 hours for 11MB file via USB 2). During long file transfers, drives consistently crash, exhibit drive-failure warnings, and are unrecognized by computer. Total trash, at least in Windows XP environments on high-end equipment. Need to be pulled from Amazon stock. Avoid!!
320GB Lacie D2 Extr II 7200RPM.......2007-05-13
The separate Power Supply `Brick' started to fail almost immediately. After searching the web and reading what other people having the same symptoms said, I called Lacie customer support and requested a new Power Supply. I received the new supply (bigger than the original) in about a week and have had no problems since.
This unit is used primarily for backup purposes and also is used for transferring data between computers. It is easy to use and I am pleased with the speed.

It may seem odd that a game could combine elements of Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, and grocery store shopping, but Skannerz does just this. Here's how it works: All UPC symbols scanned into this device are converted into virtual monsters, some of which join your team voluntarily, some of which you must electronically defeat in order to conscript them. From there, you can play special games that train your monsters to become more powerful and compete against other players. We had some difficulty at first figuring out how to scan the items, and wouldn't recommend this for younger children for whom the technology might be frustrating. --Charlie Williams

My son's friend had one of these toys, thus began the search for it since the stores have stopped selling them. I think they have been discontinued by the maker.
Still he has enjoyed it and he loves to go to the store with me now because he can scan all the bar codes he wants. No real educational value unless they want to grow up and work at a grocery store.
My son is 9 and it might be hard for some younger kids to use this toy.

As a mother of three boys ages 8, 10, and 12, I can honestly say this is now one of our family's favortite toys. Although I can't see any educational value, it has made running errands more fun for the whole family. While shopping (any kind of store) the boys happily come along so they can scan every item they see. They get so excited because random barcodes will give them new electronic monsters to collect. My oldest has had his Skanners since Christmas and they all liked it so much that his brothers each requested their own for their birthdays. It is one toy that seems to keep their attention and allevieates the stress of dragging whinning children to not-so-exciting, but necessary places.
