Toshiba 200GB USB 2.0 external drive.......2007-11-23
This drive is great! Get it! The only thing is that I wanted to be sure that I had not just a back up of my files, but an actual disk image. This way I do not have to worry about reinstalling programs and settings and such and of course the files are backed up as well. So I did not use the prepackaged back up software, I use Acronis True Image software in order to back up a complete disk image which I can simply install on a new hard disk if my comp breaks down again. Of course, for the routine back up of data files you can use the Acronis as well. The device runs cool and silently and is quick. I recommmend formatting it as NTFS before you start using it and of course your USB port has to be powered or you are going to have to use the supplied power cord. I am quite satisfied with this purchase, but I can't give an opinion about the software because I wanted more that just data file backups.
untrustworthy.......2007-10-25
For two months, this unit hummed along beautifully, performing at or above expectations. Then this morning, with no more than 3% capacity filled, it started clicking and stopped working. At least 100 hours of work disappeared in an instant.
Sure, this happens to everyone, and everyone's supposed to have a backup, but this was the backup. Do I need to backup the backup? I guess, so ... just not with a Toshiba.
Defective Unit.......2007-10-11
Tried subject Drive on two different G4 Mac Powerbook computers, each using Tiger OS 10.4.1. Tried both the 2.0 USB cable and the DC cables and then used a hub. Never could get the drive to function. No e-mail response from Toshiba tech listed in the guide. Finally tried Repair/Replacement which was not helpful.
Contacted Amazon and said after several hours of frustration had concluded that the Unit was defective.
No problem with returning it to Amazon. They will refund. Didn't care for a Toshiba replacement and will purchase some other External Hard Drive. This may be a good Unit when it works, but my experience with it and Toshiba tech support was unsatisfactory. Amazon get 5 stars. The defective Unit a zero.
Japanese Quality.......2007-08-23
I will be brief:
Reasonable price. Looks nice. So far so good. Legendary Japanese quality but made in China. Very fast. May be only two cables system is baggy design (also additional cover for this external hard drive and cables could be helpful).
Great for backups; fits in safe deposit box.......2007-08-21
I purchased two of these for backups; one onsite and one offsite in a safe deposit box. The form factor is perfect for the standard size found in US banks. So far everything is working just as expected, backing up a mix of Windows and Mac data just fine.
