I don't know what the fuss is about in the negative reviews ... I plugged the WD MyBook into my network, gave it a few minutes to power up, and it was immediately visible to my Mac (Leopard OS). I went to my XP system and mapped the drive just like any other drive, and it worked fine. Speed seems to be network-limited, which I expected. The drive is very quiet. All in all, it looks like a good network storage solution at an attractive price and essentially zero setup effort. I haven't installed *any* software, nor do I plan to. Web-based access is not important to me since I can log into my server remotely anyway.

This could have been a great product, it is inexpensive (compared to the alternatives) it looks good and the product box list attractive features.
However, once you buy it you realize that:
- The great features listed on the box are not included, you must purchase a premium per month service for as long as you own it. In my opinion this amounts to false advertising and I hope that someone serves WD with a class action suit...I will definitely be there.
- The backup software is the worst performing software of any category I have ever seen in my life. After working ONCE, it refuse to work properly, so I ended up uninstalling it. EMC will never get me to use (never mind buying) anything else that bears the name EMC.
- The transfer or the drives are VERY, I mean, VERY slow. I only have about 40 GB and it takes 12-16 hours to copy it.
- It will not support AVI, MPG and other popular formats....it is like a product built for the 60 and 70's.
Good luck WD....you should fire the Product Manager, he/she has probably being bribed by your competition.
I suggest that if you are looking for a NAS for something you really value, pay a bit more and get a professional grade one. With this one you will be throwing your money out of the window.

That this drive is self-policing is insane. What sort of marketing blunder is this? As a local drive this drive is very usable, but the moment you try to run it as a file server, forget it.
Western Digital MyBooks, in general, are very nice products. Just not this one, or their NAS product. You can do much better if you are looking for a NAS.
Inexpensive network attached storage.......2007-12-16
I purchased this item to share music, video, & photographs in my home network. I am using windows XP and Vista on the network, and it works without a flaw. I mapped drive letters to each of the computers and my Zune software can sync to it without any problem. It does seem to be a little slow, but when you are transferring more than 100 GB. That probably is going to take a little time. Or it may just be my router that is a little slow.
There is quite a bit of discussion about the software that came with it not allowing you to transfer media, but because I am not using that software and only using it in my internal network. I do not have that problem.

this is a good example of a company which thinks it is doing what's best for it's customers by not allowing you to share your movies, music over the network.
Perhaps they are trying to go out of business. who knows.

I picked up a 24X Plextor... to replace my 12X Plextor!
I was hoping that Plextor's 24X was as good as it's previous line and I was not disappointed! I have burned everything from backing my documents, to WAV/MP3 CDs!
The Plexor 24/10/40's reading capabilities are also amazing. I was in a roll-over accident, in which my favorite disc was damaged. I pulled the CD which refused to play in four other players, and burned a copy of it, which plays all the way through!
