Good Storage for the price, terrible software.......2007-12-23
Performance wise, this is a pretty slow drive, but I wasn't expecting it to be blazing fast after seeing benchmarks for this thing. Comparative devices such as the Maxtor Share Storage II cost about $100 more (almost 30%), so it's understandable that this thing's a little bit slower. I'm using this on my home network of PCs and Macs, and it works great for backing up and transferring files from one computer to another. The time it takes to transfer through the Mybook is the same as it would be to plug in a usb drive, transfer data, and go to the other computer.
The included Mionet is BAD. B.A.D. Bad. After getting this thing I promptly skipped the installation setup for Mionet. Although it gives you "anywhere access", it slows down the drive even more, which is the reason why many reviewers are giving this thing such a hard time. Western Digital should choose another company to provide this service.
Aesthetically speaking, this is a pretty drive, although it does get loud, but I have it in a closet so it doesn't bother me.
Overall I'd give it 3.5 stars, because it's a good bang for the buck and the cheapest 1 TB NAS solution out there, crippled by bad software.
What good is a NAS if you can't access the files remotely?.......2007-12-17
As an external disk drive that you use attached to your local machine, the drive will serve your needs well. But if, say, you wanted to use this drive as a NAS for a network of any size, this drive fails miserably.
Why is that?
This drive includes mandatory DRM features that make it impossible for more than one user to access certain files. Among these files are video files. It doesn't matter if you created the files yourself; if the file fits within the pre-defined scope of what is "banned from sharing" you're not going to get the file. Back to SneakerNet... or you can "fool" the drive by naming your file from file.avi to file.avi.txt... but why is this necessary? For what am I buying a NAS for if I have to jump through hoops?
Complete waste of money. There are other NAS solutions on the market that are loads better than don't come saddled with mandatory DRM installed into the firmware of the device.

In order to please Hollywood and the RIAA this drive will not share media files.
Do you really want to invest in a hard drive limits what kind of files you can share. Is that really the job of your hard drive manufacturer. What next, will WD drives scan themselves for "illegal" content and email the FBI?

While this drive does have some handy features, the WD Anywhere Access software is intentionally crippled and doesn't let you share media files. According to Western Digital, "Due to unverifiable media license authentication, the following file types cannot be shared by different users using WD Anywhere Access.": AAC, AIF, ASF, ASX, AVI, CD Audio, DVI, DVIX, MOV, MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4, MPE, MPEG, MPG, OOG, QT, WM, WMA, WMV and several others.
The drive is still quite handy if you have 1TB of text files, though.

The item is great for backups and to share files, the thing here is that is not to fast if had a network working on 10/100mb, if you have one running on a 1000mb and the PC's having this type of card to, you could get a great performance.
The trial software that it comes to connect remotly it's wwwoooooowwww, you have to try it.

Poor quality.......2002-07-18
I ordered this drive 6 months ago. The drive I initially received, worked fine initially, but over a few months took longer and longer to warm up (up to 30 minutes), before the computer would recognize it. I returned it to the manufacturer. The second drive they sent me lasted for about 2 weeks, before my computer reported that it could not read from the drive at all, due to I/O errors. It seems that this drive is so unreliable, I need to keep a copy of all my files somewhere else, to be sure I don't lose anything when the drive fails.
Needs better support for OS-X.......2001-12-27
Does not operate well in OS-X. Drive is not accessable in OS-X unless Classic OS-9 is running on bootup. This means that you cannot run OS-X applications directly from the drive.
The transfer rate for this drive is extremely slow when uploading digital video files directly from the camera to the drive. The drive will lockup and you will need to reboot the system to unlock the drive if you cannot unlock it by powering the drive on and off.
Maxtor customer service is lacking, as well. There is no disclaimer on the box or any of their documentation on their website advising consumers about compatability problems with OS-X. They do not have any driver updates section for this drive on their website. I finally found the OS-X disclaimer after I downloaded the Software Installation file and decompressed it. This file should have been on the webpage as a notice.
Maxtor makes very good products, but they really stepped on it with this one. They need to do a better job with Mac products if they want to keep their share of this market, or just do us a favor and stop producing for the Mac and save us a lot of time.
great product for use with an iMac.......2001-12-12
I have had nothing but good luck with this product since I bought it about 4 months ago. I use it for backing up my hard drive and extra video and picture storage. Easy to use and nice looking on the desktop. Highly recommend. I think I would spend the extra cash on the 80MB if I had it to do all over though.
Maxtor External Hard Drives.......2001-11-02
Since no one had mentioned their experience with Maxtor external drives on the PC, I thought I would add my two cents. I recently purchased the 40gb USB HD from them and it works great. Between my friends and I, we have all had nothing but instant plug and play success in Windows 98, ME, and 2000 -- which I must say is rare for PC products. They don't even include driver disks; you don't need them!
I don't see why the FireWire option would be much different, assuming you have the correct ports. It's an excellent buy for so much storage space. If you don't plan on swapping much data and use it more for backups or ghosting as I do, it puts any other medium (Zip, Jaz, CD-R, Tape) to shame.
Lastly, I would definitely recommend Maxtor products over Buslink, who also makes external HDs. I bought Buslink's silver portable CD-RW drive and still haven't been able to get it to work in Windows 2000 (which claimed compatibility on the box), and I have given up on their customer service after months of being no help whatsoever.

The first one of these I bought wouldn't stay alive for more than a couple of minutes between power-ups. Maxtor kept telling me it was an incompatibility with my computer and wouldn't repair it even though I had tried a different firewire card and computer. I returned the drive for another one. The next one worked more reliably until recently and now it acts like the first one I bought. Maxtor won't admit this drive has flaws!
