Dont get me wrong I think the product is fine (but expensive) so why do I still have to buy the software (after a 30-day trial)???
Avoid the WD My Book Home Edition 1 tb model.......2007-12-12
I have have 500 gb model running on OSX 10.5 with no issues. The 1 tb model is problematic with quality. I have already returned 5 drives for various issues (Does not spin up 2x, Spins up but not recognized 2x, and DOA). Did simon says with tech support, swap cables, connected to diff CPU, diff OS (Vista, XP, OSX), diff interfaces, swapped out with existing WD My book drive(500 gb model). Uninstalled and Reinstalled drivers. If you still want to try it make sure you can return it. Because you probably will.

I bought three of these drives to use for backups for Macs. Opened one, hooked it up to an Intel iMac (OS X 10.4.11) via firewire and nothing appeared on desktop. Disk utility didn't see it; System profiler couldn't even identify the firewire device (though it saw something) on the firewire bus. I powered it off, tried the usb port and it doesn't even register in System profiler, much less come up. Opened the second drive, same thing: nada. Tried using my own cables, tried opening it on a PPC mini, a G4 laptop (all running 10.4) and a Dell Win XP laptop and no joy. I have had 1.5 TB external RAID6 firewire/usb enclosures attached to these machines with no problems so the disk size isn't the issue. I've built many extern drives via enclosure kits and had no problems (some chipsets wouldn't boot a Mac but they always appeared), so this is a big warning flag.
By chance one (and only one) time, when I tried swapping their cheap power bricks between the two, and magically one (but only one) of the drives appear. I started Disk Utility to wipe it and about halfway through repartitioning it to HFS, it disappears with a warning about it being disconnected from machine. Power cycled the drive, and got a kernel error forcing a reboot of the machine.
I did not bother opening the third drive because I decided even if it worked I shouldn't trust data on a product that had already failed 2/3 times. The drive's powerbrick is a small two-prong box (1x1x2"), that looks remarkable similar in quality and heft as a cheap cell-phone powerbrick. I'd have no problem with with a super lightweight cheap feeling plastic enclosure nor cheap feeling powerbrick if it worked, but it seems like Western Digital has a real lemon here.
Only after I had these problems did I notice the reviews on Amazon (4 out five gave it one star). Add one more warning to stay away from this product...

I'm using an Intel iMac - I plugged it in, connected the firwire cable to my other external drive (a Maxtor) and it popped up on my desktop. I erased it using the Leopard Disk Utility, it was partitioned and then "Time Machine" went to work backing up my data. I must have spent a total of less than 10 minutes which included breaking into the packaging to extract the drive and its accessories (why hasn't everyone switched to packaging that doesn't require the potentially dangerous use of an exacto knife to open?). One of the reasons I switched from a PC user (for more than 20 years) to mac this year was because most everything works out of the box as advertised. I've had the harrowing experiences described above when attempting to connect external hard drives to Window's operating systems too.
The method to make this drive working.......2007-11-30
I got the same problem just like the rest of the customer had. ""not recognize by the pc". Be honest, this drive has a lot of the complains from customer. But unfortunately, i have a bad habit-i don't give up to try because i pay too much for this and i know that WD is not that low to sell a defected drive. So, i use another method- by searching the system and device driver to see this Harddrive does exist in the list. As i notice, it does exist, just the "my computer" menu doesn't display. So i reformat the drive from the device manager. Good thing is, i use the USB and make it done, Although i never try in another type of wire. Notice this, This drive does work, but all customers need to use on their own knowledge and experience in computer to bypass the problem. One last thing, make sure this drive is the only USB device in your pc by using it, then do the reformat to make the pc recognize it.

Good for the price.......2007-12-21
The quality of the calls are pretty good, the quality of the phone is on par with the price. Having a little problem with the software it doesn't load with skype every time, it says its not compatible with vista (old software i think). There maybe an update somewhere but haven't spent much effort to find it. I mainly bought phone to try out skype and have upgraded to the better Phillips phone and am very happy with it.
Mac users beware -- this phone is worthless........2007-12-10
Very disappointed. They don't make it clear that there is no Mac support. Worse, this product is not even listed on the Philips website. Can't believe that Philips put together a product with such shoddy support.

bang for the buck? try explosion........2007-12-06
when i dropped vonage, i needed a mobile solution that would be cost effective and easy to set up and this phone stood out among the other options that were before me. i trusted the philips name, the sleek polished black appearance was nice and it was within my price range... so i was sold. the drivers were easy to install, you connect it to your USB port and you're ready to talk away. it doesn't get any simpler than that. the device buttons allows you to interface with the skype program on your computer and you can scroll through your contact list or mute the conversation... the sound is fantastic and seems to echo less than my other skype solution at home. if i were going to add something to this product, i'd add a hands-free option to it... speakerphone or headset jack because sometimes i just get tired of holding a phone and i talk quite a bit. other than that, it does its job and at a fair price, it's a great device.

The quality of the phone is outstanding. The clarity of the conversation is amazing. I took one point off because sometimes, my interlocutor hears me echoing.
Very poorly designed skype phone.......2007-10-03
After reading all of the positive reviews I decided to try out this phone. My experiences were quite different with it.
First of all the phone was not plug and play by any means. It did not come with Vista software, and I had to mess around with drivers online for nearly an hour before I could get it to work. I also had to change skype settings before getting it to work.
Secondly the phone is just cheaply made, and you can tell just by picking it up that it feels like a toy.
The phone's plastic base is really a joke. It easily moves around on your desk and the phone does not sit properly in it with the cord unwound. This was very frustrating. The USB cord also feels like it would easily break under stress.
As for the calling experience there is a delay between the time the button is pressed and when it shows up in skype, so if you are used to dialing quickly you will be fumbling over numbers with this phone.
One of the only things I can recommend about this phone is that the sound quality while making calls was fairly good, but not great. Sounded to me like a cheap land-line house phone.
Another frustrating problem that I ran into was that when skype was running, all of the sounds coming from my pc (for example: when playing an mp3 in iTunes) were being routed through the phone. I had to change the settings in skype every time I wanted to listen to music, play games etc.
If you want something that feels and looks like a regular house phone but makes skype calls you may be dissapointed like I was. I'd recommend taking a hard look at the competition before considering this one. In my opinion I feel it was not worth the money.
