The headphones' noise-canceling circuit senses outside noise using tiny, built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headphone drivers, effectively blocking solid-state (continuous) noise from 40 to 1,500 Hz. It's especially effective on noises like air-conditioning systems, freeway rumble, and airplane engines (from a passenger's perspective).
The switchable noise-canceling circuitry runs for approximately 30 hours on a single AA alkaline battery (with battery housing located just above the right earphone). When noise canceling is off, the headphones continue to function for standard music listening (and with slightly better sound quality). The headphones' neodymium-magnet diaphragms deliver powerful sound.
The HP-CN6 features a mini-jack for connecting to portable CD players and digital audio players, but it also includes a larger jack adapter for home stereo receivers and a dual jack for plugging into airplane seats, enabling you to enjoy the in-flight movie in peace and quiet.

Still a great buy.......2007-03-25
I've had my HP-CN6's for going on 3 years now. On plane trips they're great at sound reduction. It does indeed reduce ambient noise by 70%. I take the train to work everyday which is extremely noisy. My HP-CN6 reduces those sounds also by at least 60-70%. Now the bad news: They start hurting your ears after 1-2 hours of use since they clamp on your head tightly and the earpads are thin to start with. Once you get use to them, they're not that bad.
Recently wear and tear starting catching up to it after 3 years of heavy use. The Earpads starting to wear down and tear and the wire going into the phone jack is starting to come out (tape is holding it place now). So I starting looking for some new headphones at a similiar price and equal or better noise reduction qualities.
I tried the Sony Noise-Canceling Folding Headphones Model: MDRNC6 at around $46.00 and returned them a day after I brought them. They had very poor noise reduction ability and poor sound quality as compared to my old HP-CN6's which was very surprising and disappointing. I may try Sennheiser's next. So my search continues. Overall these headphones are solidly constructed and offers good noise reduction quality and indeed is worth the buy.

It's simple "it doesn't work" the best ones I've tried on were the Boss, but they're very expensive. So I'm still waitting on the price to come down.

Ok,
I bought these two or three months ago after a colleague told me that noise-cancelling headphones are very nice when you are on the plane for hours and hours. He spend $299 for his. When this set was on sale for $15 I asked myself what can go wrong - especially when brand Aiwa is behind this.
Here are the reason why I don't like this set:
- very, very annoying "high hiss" (see others people's reviews)
- beside this extra noise I actually noticed only a little reduction of external noise; I tried it on the plane from California to Germany for I would say 2 min (couldn't stand the high hiss for longer), and also in an office with a desktop computer on; I'm not sure if external noise is really reduced or ears now focus on high frequency noise.
- it is not very comfortable due to plastic top
- with "high hiss" off, sound quality is like typical $5 headphones

I agree with Watt mentioning there was a hiss..and I think its low-noise cancelling effect is good, not for voices at times.
Music quality was heavy in bass.
Fairly comfortable..its presence is well felt.
Dont understand why its price keeps fluctuating like crazy on Amazon (between $14 and $50)
Great Price good product for air travel.......2006-01-15
When I first received my head phones I though they were ok at best, the sound quality was decent but the head strap appears bulky when wearing. Then I used them on a recent 11 hour plane trip and they came into there own, the lower level background noise was reduced greatly so much so that I did not have to turn the volume up at all to watch the movies and even when not plugged into anything they made a very noticeable difference.
Overall I would defiantly recommend for them for air travel, their worth every penny.

Pretty good quality, kind of bulky but any of the cases for the vision:m are bulky. I got mine about 3 months ago, still smells like leather!

Nice leather but I had to widen the hole at the top so that I could open the flap to use the buttons when the headphones were plugged in. You can't dock to add music or recharge the player when it's in the case. You end up removing the player a lot.
The small side buttons on the side of the touch part are almost impossible to use when in the case.
Good but flawed, will do until something better is released.
