Have had no problems.......2007-06-21
I have had this drive for about nine months and it has not failed me once. I have connected it to a few different laptops and a server and all were able to read and write to it with no problem. I don't have any systems with firewire yet so I just use the USB. I use this for shared storage as well as storing and running several vmware server vitual machines. It has always performed like a champ. I use this at work and it has become the place to go to get and store files and applications for many people within MIS.
Do NOT buy!.......2007-05-14
I backed up all of my .mp3 files, as well as many important files onto this product. When I got a new computer, I tried to access the files on this external hard drive and couldn't because I got a message saying the drive was not formatted. It IS formatted, by the same OS (Windows XP)! Now I cannot retrieve all the important files I had saved on this product.

Do Not Buy.......2007-05-03
I got this drive for Christmas 06. It is May 07 and it is dead. It was nice when it worked and fast too. But the drive just quit working. I sent it for warranty work, but guess what? Seagate bought Maxtor and is honoring the warranty. It is hard to navigate Maxtor stuff on Seagate's website because it doesn't support a lot of Maxtor's old stuff. I got an RMA from Seagate for a refurbed drive of the same kind. The new drive worked once and then died. It's still at Seagate as we speak. Its a hassle. I have all maxtor internal drives in my computers and love them. I hate this one. I'd recommend Maxtor to anyone but they are not around anymore.
Don't buy any leftover Maxtor stuff on the shelves that are overstock, or you'll have to deal with poor Seagate staff trying to phase out the stuff.
Good compromise.......2007-03-21
This drive was a good compromise between price and size. It's NOT a network drive so you have to hook it up directly to a computer. I used a new MacBookPro. I used a home network to transfer files from my old computer to the mac and then moved the files to the Maxtor. Easy with the mac. Files took a couple of hours over the network to transfer but a 5 minutes over the FireWire 800 connection. It comes formatted for macs but you can reformat for MS Windows. Problems came with the usual- the quick start manual didn't quite follow what was on the setup disk so it took some time fiddling around to find what was supposed to be installed. Then the interface program would not work. Luckily the trouble shooting FAQ on the website addressed just that problem and after shuffling some files the drive seems to work great. I haven't tried it yet but the semi-automatic backup and synching software seems to be good stuff. The drive is really noisy but you only have to turn it on when you are actually using it.

Let me put it this way - I have not tried this drive yet because it only came with a Firewire 800 cable. The Maxtor website specs do in fact say it comes with only one FW 800 cable (no USB2 or FW400 cables). So, be aware of that if you may need to buy an extra Firewire 400 or USB 2.0 device cable to use this device, which I am having to do. The reason I bought this drive is because I already own a Maxtor One Touch III USB drive with 16mb cache. That device is very fast on the data transfer (about 22mb/s per sec by USB 2.0) and well-built, and quiet. After opening this package this drive is the same shape and size as the 320gb Maxtor One Touch III USB drive I bought previously through Amazon.com. I hope the 500gb drive will prove to be as fast. I got this particular drive because I believe it will be just as fast in the data transfer and in the future I will be upgrading my computer to support Firewire 800. I currently have Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 ports. This drive is probably a good choice for anyone needing reliable storage, fast data transfer speeds for general use (not like a Raid 0 hard drive that videoographers need), and if you need a firewire 800 connection.
