Disappointing - should have researched first........2007-05-08
I was really disappointed with this iPod dock/clock radio. It didn't function properly when I received it and I didn't want to mess around and exchange the product when there would be no guarantee that the problems with mine were not universal ones. The volume on this system was either off or on FULL. The light for the time display was really bright and can't be dimmed - can only be turned off which you do by hitting the snooze button. I like a tiny bit of light from my clock during the night so I can tell the time, but I definitely can't sleep with the brightness of this clock - so it's either off and you don't know the time; or it's on and you can't sleep from the brightness. I found it annoying that I would have to hit the snooze button to get the light to come on to see the time as it came on so brightly, a bit of a shock, and I usually reserve hitting a snooze button for the morning when the alarm goes off. I know it may sound petty - but that is my least favorite button on the alarm and if I can avoid using it I will. It seems the snooze function is used for a few things, but I can't remember now as I have sent it back. Also, the songs would only play intermittently. The unit was quite temperamental - either it worked or it didn't - there was no predicting when it would work.
The main problem with this unit, its temperament in playing or not playing, I'm sure was a fault in the product, but the brightness and volume, I believe, are probably design flaws, hence my review outlining all problems I had.
When I went to return the product to the seller I bought it from, I had to call for a return authorization number, and also needed to detail the problems and how to replicate them. (Be aware with a seller, not Amazon, that you may need to pay shipping costs both ways, unless you exchange the product, then they will pay the cost of only shipping you the new one. Amazon pays return shipping costs if the item is defective - I don't understand why some of the sellers here don't.)
I am now thoroughly researching other systems. It seems difficult to get one that suits my needs. Other systems have complaints such as the gradual increasing of volume of the alarm only takes a few seconds to go from gentle to loud, or the time display light is too bright, or you can't wake up to the song or playlist you'd like to on certain systems, or it starts playing from the beginning of your library and can't be programmed to do otherwise, or on others you need to program it in on the actual iPod. Another problem seems to be that you cannot reduce the volume to the level you want on some systems.
In my opinion, the only good thing about this docking system is that it comes with many attachments so you can fit different iPods into it. I can't speak for the size of this unit compared to others as this was my first attempt at buying one. I think I have learned to consider features rather than price in future, so hopefully I won't be disappointed again.

If you are putting a home theater system you need to look at these for the back speakers and the take LCR for the three font speakers with the 10 inc. sub. When I have people over and turn the the system on,and put the system in stereo mode (just the two front speakers on) and have them close there eyes and have them guess which speaks are on and point to them,they end up point at all of speakers,then I ask them to go and listen to the speakers that they thought were on and no sound is coming from them,they just cant believe just the two speakers were on.Then when I turn the rest of the speakers on they are blown away. For all of this system it was under $1600 with a Yamaha rx-v559 receiver. This set up blows any Bose system out of the water for half the money.Call around to your small audio visual stores to see if they have the speakers and go listen to them in person and you will be hooked.The big box stores do not carry them for a reason they would not be able to sell there other over priced under preforming name brand speakers.

Just didn't work, period.......2006-10-14
First, the registration failed to connect to the internet. Not the end of the world, but that was a tip as to how the rest of it would work.
It would not format with the firewire connected - it would only format with the USB connection to the computer (per maxtor's web site). Once I got it formatted via USB, I tried to reconnect it via firewire 800, and the formatting was lost - the disk showed up as RAW file format. So I started over. The manual indicates a way to "erase" from the security settings section, but the option was not in the list for my installation. The only way to force a format was to change the Raid setting to Raid 1, then go back to Raid 0.
So I got it reformatted, and to top it all off, even connected via USB, the backup failed with a message that there was not enough disk space when trying to back up a 300GB disk on the computer with the Onetouch configured as Raid 0 (600GB) - actual formatted space was 558GB - that's a lot of overhead.
I don't know if I just got a bad one or what, but I've spent enough time on this. I'm going to give the WD Mybook a try instead.
