Very good hardware, not the best software.......2007-08-19
I have this drive in the same configuration, Drive Station SATA 7200 RPM Ext USB, except that my hard drive is the smaller 500GB instead of the 750GB.
However everything else is the same and it does come with the same software.
I feel that the previous reviewer did not do justice to the drive and presented one side of the "story" only. He is right that the bundled software is not one of the best, but truly I have never seen any drive or any computer gadget that would come with state of the art software.
The software that puts the Drive Station in power saving mode did work fine for me.
However I do not like the feature because when the drive "wakes up" it is sensed by all kind of software in the computer and then I have to click through a bunch of windows that pop up before I can use it. So I just uninstalled the software.
The back-up software that comes with it is Memeo v1.7 (free update to v2.0 on line) is decent and seems to work fine (I tried it out of curiosity), however I own Second Copy v7.00 and therefore I uninstalled the Memeo utility. It is good but I don't need it.
Regarding the hardware, the drive is as fast as the USB is, and I plugged in the cables, turned power on, and it worked like a charm. The hard drive comes even preformatted for Windows (it works on Mach also, but you have to reformat the drive with the enclosed utility).
Overall I thing it deserves 4.5 stars, 4 for software, 5 for hardware, but since I bought it for the hardware I gave it 5 stars.
Horrible Product!.......2007-08-14
In short, the 'auto-sleep' software accompanying this product crashed my system and has never worked. That feature is why I bought it. I spoke with Tech support and they assured me that no matter WHAT was wrong with the drive it had to be my system's fault. I've worked on a tech support hotline for pc's for over a year; these folks have no intention of assisting you in any way other than denying it's their product's fault. I'd encourage you to call Bafallo tech support and run this one past them before you buy this product. None of the packaged software (backup software and auto-off software) work. Buy a harddrive from a reputable dealer instead (Western Digital, Maxtor or FreeAgent/Maxtor).
