Faster!.......2007-09-27

My Dell only came with 512 megs. I upgraded earlier this year to 1.2 gigs and saw a real improvement in the speed of documents opening. However, I recently took up photography and saw a marked decline in speed, whenever i had any photo editing software open.

Since i've added the last gig, now up to 2 gig, i have no complaints. Machine boots, programmes open, everything processes, much faster now.

Just what I needed.......2007-08-03

This memory chip was competitively priced, well-documented, easy to install, and (thus far) fully reliable. Wish my own memory worked this well... Moreoever, it accomplished the reason I bought it in the first place. That was to accelerate a bargain-priced but slow laptop to reasonable speeds.

Occasional problems reading movies........2007-12-15

This HP dvd1040 works fine for all reading of data and all writing of movies or data, but not for watching movies.

I like to use my computer to watch Netflix rentals. Several times, a DVD has not played in this HP DVD writer, but has played in both my Acer laptop and my stand alone Panasonic DVD player.

Once, this was evidently because a disc was scratched: 'I Claudius, disc 1' from Netflix. The disc was scratched and one part of the series would not play in my HP--but had no problem in my other players.

Other times, I suspected a problem was caused by the way that the manufacturers implemented copy protection. The sound was distorted when played in this HP--but again, no problem in my other players.

However, perhaps the problems are from the HP being a USB model, whereas the Acer is built-in? Or perhaps a speck of dust has lodged somewhere? It is my opinion that HP has made this model over-sensitive somehow. I am partly guessing. But if possible, I would suggest that you look for a different model with plenty of reviews, and no significant reports of movie-playing problems.

In any case, I have decided it is best to have 2 DVD writers, and 2 different brands. For my second DVD writer, I will prefer a Sony. Not because I am certain that Sony is a better brand--but mainly because it is a 'different' brand. Then, if one has a problem reading a certain disc, the other is less likely to have the same problem.

PS--In case you don't know, the 'lightscribe' label writer only works on discs with 'lightscribe' capability, which currently, seem to cost significantly extra. So long as this is the case, I just as soon pay less for standard discs, and to write my titles with an acid-free Bic Mark-It.
