I am extremely disapointed. I have never had a hard drive die like this one in over 10 years. This one just stopped working. Usually when a drive goes it will start to give warning signs, ie., lost data, sounds, louder, access issues one time then fine the next. This usually allows me to get the data off the drive before it totally crashes.
No warning with this drive. It just quit working. Maybe it's the electronics of the enclosure that quit. I don't know unless I crack it open, but this will void the warranty.
I'm hoping that Seagate will honor the warranty. I put in my serial number and model number on their website and it states that the drive is not covered under warranty. I have not called yet.
I purchase this on 6/4/07 and it died on 11/21/07. This seems to be big issue with these external drives.
I will not buy Maxtor or seagate products anymore. A quick Google on these drive pulls up ambulance chasing attorneys that are looking at starting class action lawsuits.
Update 11/28/2007: I called and spoke to someone overseas....I could barely understand the rep as my southern accent clashed with his Indian accent. He was very polite. It is unbelievable the hoops you will have to go through to send this thing back for warranty. I had to take digital pictures of my store receipt and the serial numbers of the unit and upload this to the seagate website along with a request for a DMA. The response came back within 24hrs which was nice. They also did not aks me for error codes or try to walk me through any kind of troubleshooting first. I was told to send the drive back. This was nice, but also tells me that the company must be having problems with these units.
Whatever you do if you buy this product do not throw the packaging away in case you do have to return it. I threw mine away and I am sifting through 11 pages of shipping instructions. This is utterly ridiculous.
I live in the middle of nowhere and have to drive 90 miles to find an electrostatic bag large enough to put the defective unit in, as well as encase the unit in 2 inches of foam before shipping. I can understand this, but as I recall the original container the unit came in was not packed the good?
To add salt on top of the wounds, I will only be getting a refurbished drive back with a 90 day warranty on that drive. So do the math: the original drive was under warranty for 12 months from purchase, the drive died at 5.5 months, 3 month warranty after I get the refurbished drive for a total of 8.5 months of use under warranty. I loose 2.5 months of coverage due to a crappy product. I still may call the one of the attorneys that are looking at class action suit against Seagate. I don't care if I get nothing out of it, but this company needs to be spanked for continuing to sell these defective drives to an unsuspecting public.
I may be paranoid, but the other thing that sort of steams me is that in the emails I received from seagate is that they try to push data recovery services. This makes me wonder if Seagate/maxtor is intentionally making poor products in order to charge anywhere from $125 - $2000 in recovery service on a faulty drive.
I used to love this company and now it appears they have adopted the typical US corporate greed philosophy of maximizing profits at the consumers expense.
I will update again to let folks know if the company honors the warranty (If I jumped through all the shipping hoops) and sends me a refurbished unit. If so I may buy other newer Seagate drives that are under a 5 year warranty and make sure I keep the packaging.
I will give the Seagate the benefit as Seagate has recently bought Maxtor and knows they have some quality control issues with Maxtor products. I do think they may be trying to do the right thing by their customers. If not then I will no longer buy any Seagate/Maxtor products.

It was a nice drive while it lasted. Unfortunately, it died after 2 months. It's still under warranty, but I'm going to opt not to return it with my personal information still on the drive. I'd rather destroy it and purchase a Western Digital. I've had better experience with WD drives. Unfortunately, I was tempted by a lower price with this drive.

Never had an external hd but with too much music on my pc I sorely needed. after a great deal of research and input from friends I went with the Maxtor 500gb. All my music and pics are barely a blip on this baby.
Yeah the lite is oddly really bright but it makes it easier to find the pc in the dark for us eyeball-challenged folks. Watch the prices and shop around as they do fluctuate as much as $50-$100.[...].

This Flash drive is pretty good.
The speed isn't what they say.
I got:
For one big file: Write 19 m/sec, Read 24 /sec
For many small files: Write 2 m/sec, Read 8 m/sec.
This drive is a little pricey too.
The San Disk Contour gets about the same speed,
and costs less. However it has U3 on it.

When upgrading your computer memory, you need to look for 2 things. One, make sure you get the memory from a reliable manufacturer. Two, make sure you get the memory that is compatible with your system. Viking has the reputation for producing good memory, and its website also has the memory configurator that helps you select the right memory for your system.
