Installation is a breeze because you don't really "install" anything -- just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is not even an installation CD because all the included software loads automatically from the hard drive the first time you plug it in. For cream-of-the-crop, high-speed performance, use My Book Pro Edition's FireWire 800 interface. However, if FireWire 800 isn't convenient, Western Digital has you covered -- the My Book Pro Edition hard drive is also compatible with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400. Best of all, you don't have to choose between one or the other because all three interfaces are built into every drive.
Western Digital provides powerful software with the drive -- EMC Retrospect Express -- that makes backing up your data as easy as possible. Dead drive after one year.......2007-12-29
My Western Digital 500GB Pro Edition external hard drive died earlier this week. I looked up at the Instant Order info from Amazon and found out it has just been a little over a year since I originally ordered it (Dec 13, 2006).
Before getting to the bad, I should point out I've used the hard drive to store primarily my music, photos, and video for the past year. I haven't seen any data corruption or any speed issues before, even when the drive was nearly full. I've been using the hard drive HFS+ formatted with my MacBook via the Firewire 400 interface (which I recommend for a noticeable difference over USB 2). It woke up correctly when it needed to even after I rebooted or put my computer to sleep and woke the computer back up.
The drive vibrated slightly and made some noise especially when waking from its idle mode, but nothing outrageous. My Iomega external has a constant fan noise but the MyBook was only noisy when under use.
However, none of these positive experiences makes up for the fact that the hard drive died after only one year of use.
The most important quality a storage device should have is reliability, especially a relatively massive external hard drive which purpose is to store things. If your data is lost, then the speed, hardware interfaces, price, etc. are meaningless so that is why I am giving a 1 star rating.
Apparently, the MyBook suffers from a known "clicking problem" that you can search for on the web. Even though it seems this hard drive is no longer being sold on Amazon, I hope potential customers of newer models can read some of the reviews for the previous models to judge the long term reliability of the manufacturer.
Fortunately, I've been using Mac OS X Leopard's Time Machine backup feature on another external drive. I will be trying different external hard drive brands to reduce the risk and impact of simultaneous failures. Hopefully when my replacement external drive arrives, my data will be restored. I haven't decided on what brand of hard drive to try next, but I will be avoiding Western Digital drives in the foreseeable future.
No good for Macs.......2007-12-20
I've owned a couple of WD My Book drives, and this one has been the worst, although the most expensive. Every now and then, it simply refuses to mount on my Macbook. I've tried to fix this with every method recommended on Apple forums and elsewhere about the web, but Apple is uninterested in helping with 3rd party software, and WD is uninterested in helping, period. I end up having to erase the whole drive and copy from my backup drive. In the 6 months I've owned it, this has happened four times. Utter junk.

Not really sure what happened. Stopped working. Amazon took it back. Great service there. Seems to have problems. Replaced with another brand.
What a piece of junk!.......2007-11-26
I have two external hard drives for my Mac, this one and a LaCie. The LaCie boots up instantly every time. This one almost never does. Some times it takes 45-60 minutes to show up, sometimes it never does. Requires endless rebooting and relaunching. Customer support was useless. I will never buy another drive from this company.
Must be plugged into wall, not a power strip.......2007-11-21
I spent too much time fiddling with this drive (would not mount no matter what I tried) before seeing a post here at Amazon that solved it- Once I plugged the power supply into a wall socket (not a power strip), the drive mounted and could be used.
Never did see that suggestion while searching the support site at Western Digital... :(
As the use of this drive is primarily to travel from desk to desk, with almost all power supplied by power strips, I'm not sure now what to do...
